Chapter 7: Their Plan
The sound of the shopping bags crashing onto the floor echoed through the entire store.
For one beautiful second, absolute silence ruled the place.
Even the sales assistants froze in horror.
Anna stared at the scattered luxury items on the ground as if Abigail had just committed a crime against humanity itself.
Then her eyes widened dramatically.
"You did that on purpose!"
Abigail blinked innocently. "Didn’t you say I was acting like a maid? I retired."
A few people nearby failed to hide their laughter.
James lowered his head, covering his mouth with his hand, but the amusement in his eyes was obvious now.
Unfortunately, Anna noticed it too.
And that offended her more than the fallen shopping bags.
"You embarrassed me!" Anna suddenly shouted, her voice loud enough to attract even more attention. "You’ve been jealous of me since you came here!"
Mrs William immediately stepped forward anxiously.
"Anna, calm down..."
"How can I calm down?" Anna interrupted emotionally. "I tried so hard to welcome her into our family, but she keeps targeting me!"
Abigail stared at her quietly. Targeting her? She almost admired how fast Anna created stories.
Tears suddenly gathered in Anna’s eyes.
The sales assistants nearby instantly began looking at Abigail in a different light.
"She hates me because you all love me more," Anna continued sadly. "I knew this would happen eventually..."
Mr William’s face darkened immediately. "Abigail," he said heavily. "That was unnecessary."
Abigail looked at him in disbelief. "Unnecessary?"
"You shouldn’t have dropped the bags in public like that," Mrs William added softly, disappointment filling her expression. "You embarrassed your sister."
Abigail almost laughed. Instead, she looked around at the shopping bags scattered on the floor. "Of course," she said quietly. "You can’t trust me."
The words made Mrs William look uncomfortable for half a second, but Anna quickly wrapped herself around her arm again, dramatically. freewebnovёl.ƈom
"Mom, forget it," she sighed sadly. "Maybe she just needs time to adjust."
James leaned lazily against a shelf while observing everything silently.
His eyes briefly moved toward Abigail again. This time, they stayed there longer. As though he was trying to understand something.
Meanwhile, Mr William cleared his throat awkwardly. "Well..." he began. "Let’s continue shopping."
Perhaps out of guilt, Mrs William suddenly looked toward Abigail. "Dear, do you want us to buy you something too?"
Before Abigail could answer—
Anna gasped loudly. "Oh no!" she exclaimed dramatically. "Dad, didn’t you say the birthday budget was already getting too high?"
Mr William paused, and Anna looked at them innocently. "You literally said we should be careful with unnecessary spending."
The atmosphere became awkward immediately. Abigail watched their expressions carefully.
Something about it felt strange. Mr William coughed. "Well... she’s right. We already spent a lot today."
"And we can always buy something for Abigail another time," Mrs William added quickly.
Anna smiled sweetly in satisfaction. Abigail looked at all the shopping bags around Anna.
The expensive dresses, jewellery, and luxury shoes.
Then she looked back at her parents. She had seen parents spoil their children before.
She understood love, attention and affection.
But this?
This wasn’t normal anymore. Anna was already old enough to work and take care of herself, yet the entire family revolved around her emotions like employees protecting their boss.
Even the way her parents looked at her sometimes, it didn’t seem like pure affection.
It was a calculation. And now that Abigail paid closer attention...
She noticed it everywhere. The panic whenever Anna got upset. The way they immediately sided with her.
The way they carefully watched her reactions before speaking.
Something was wrong. But Abigail simply smiled. "It’s okay," she said softly. "I don’t need anything."
Anna immediately brightened again. "See? I told you she’s understanding."
James finally snorted quietly under his breath before turning away.
By the time they returned home, the sun had already begun setting.
Anna disappeared upstairs, excitedly with her shopping bags, while Mrs William followed after her.
Mr William went straight to his study. And just like that, the family scattered.
Abigail returned to the guest room quietly without saying much.
The moment the door closed behind her, she walked toward the desk and opened her laptop immediately.
The elegant screen lit up the dim room. Almost instantly, messages flooded in.
Most of them came from the orphanage staff and her close friends.
"WHEN ARE YOU COMING BACK TO WORK?"
"THE OFFICE FEELS WEIRD WITHOUT YOU."
"MADAM PRESIDENT ABANDONED US"
Abigail chuckled softly. She leaned back against the chair before typing calmly.
"I’ll come soon."
Another message appeared immediately. "Are they treating you well?"
Abigail stared at the question for a long moment. Then she smiled faintly and closed the chat without answering.
Work soon consumed her attention. Several reports needed approval. Two business meetings had already been postponed because of her sudden leave. One of her managers even begged dramatically for her return.
By the time she finished reviewing documents, her shoulders already hurt. She stretched tiredly before glancing at the clock.
Late night and tomorrow... was her birthday. For some reason, that realisation exhausted her even more. "I need food," she muttered.
The mansion downstairs was quiet. Only a few lights remained on as Abigail walked toward the kitchen. ƒгeewebnovёl.com
But before reaching it, voices stopped her. She paused near the living room unconsciously.
Mr William stood near the large window looking outside while Mrs William sat on the couch looking exhausted.
"If we don’t do what she wants," Mr William said heavily, "it will affect our income."
