Chapter 8: He’s Back

Mrs William sighed deeply. "When will Mr Smith return?" she muttered. "He said he wanted our daughter so badly. If we satisfy that man, maybe he can save our company from going bankrupt."

Mr William nodded immediately. "Of course, Anna will always be our favourite," he replied coldly. "That’s exactly why Mr Smith wants her. We can also use her popularity to boost the company’s reputation."

"That’s what I’m saying." Mrs William rubbed her forehead tiredly. "Why would you even consider giving attention to Abigail? Thank goodness she didn’t create a scene today."

Then she laughed softly. "I’ve already studied her. She has nothing useful to offer us. It’s pointless wasting time on her."

Mr William snorted. "I honestly don’t know what to do with her. If she can’t help this company, she should just return to the orphanage."

Mrs William laughed again. "I trust our Anna. She’ll handle everything well. Let’s just hope she invites those models and business friends tomorrow."

"I don’t care about the models," Mr William replied dismissively. "The businessmen’s daughters are the important ones."

Abigail stood frozen behind the wall. Her mind went blank for several seconds. So she was right. The affection wasn’t normal.

Not even close. What kind of parents talked like this about their children?

No...

What kind of people were they? For the first time since arriving at the mansion, Abigail genuinely didn’t know whether she should feel grateful or hurt that they hadn’t raised her.

Because suddenly, the orphanage felt warmer than this house ever had.

She returned to her room quietly. The moment the door closed, she began pacing back and forth restlessly.

Her thoughts refused to settle.

Leave!

Stay!

Leave!

Stay!

The words repeated endlessly inside her head. Part of her wanted to walk away immediately. But another part, the younger version of herself, still desperately wanted this family to be real.

Abigail stopped near the window and pressed her fingers against her forehead tiredly.

"What am I even doing here?" she whispered into the empty room.

....

The next morning, Abigail woke up because of the violent vibration of her phone against the bedside table.

Her brows furrowed in annoyance as she blindly searched for it under the pillow. The sunlight leaking through the curtains already made her eyes ache, and the nonstop ringing only made it worse.

"Who is disturbing people this early..." she groaned tiredly before answering the call without even checking the name.

"ABBIE!"

The scream nearly destroyed her remaining sleep.

Abigail instantly pulled the phone away from her ear. "Madeline?! Are you trying to kill me?"

"You still have time to joke?" Madeline shouted dramatically from the other side. "Have you seen the news yet?"

Abigail frowned while sitting upright on the bed. Her hair fell messily around her shoulders as sleep slowly disappeared from her face.

"The news?"

"You seriously haven’t seen it?" Madeline sounded horrified now. "Oh my God... I don’t even know how you’ll process this!"

A terrible feeling settled inside Abigail’s chest immediately.

Without another word, she hung up. Then she grabbed her laptop from the table beside her bed and opened it quickly.

The moment the screen lit up, a massive headline appeared boldly across nearly every business site.

THE PRESIDENT OF SUNNY GROUP HAS RETURNED — DRACO IS BACK.

Abigail froze."What?!"

She clicked the article instantly. Pictures of luxury cars, security teams, and blurry photos filled the screen while reporters practically worshipped the mysterious businessman in their headlines.

Nobody had seen his full face. Nobody knew much about his private life.

Yet the entire business world feared him.

Henry Michelson, also known as Draco. The man who controlled the largest business empire in the country.

The same annoying man who had ignored most life-changing offers. Abigail snapped her laptop shut immediately.

"This annoying man..." she groaned while jumping out of bed.

Then she grabbed her phone and dialled a number. The person answered almost immediately. "Ma’am?"

"Find Draco’s location for me immediately."

A pause followed. Then the nervous voice replied carefully, "But... people have been trying to find him since morning. His security system is..."

"I didn’t ask for excuses."

The poor man nearly choked. "I-I’ll do it right away!"

Abigail ended the call and rushed toward the bathroom. Today was already exhausting, and it had barely started.

Nearly thirty minutes later, Abigail stepped out of the mansion dressed elegantly in fitted black trousers, a cream blouse, and a long coat that made her look more like a ruthless executive than the ignored daughter staying in the Williams house.

The mansion itself was already filled with birthday decorations and other things.

Workers moved around carrying flowers and boxes while Anna’s giant smiling face stared from banners near the staircase, like she was running for president.

Abigail walked past everything without even blinking. freёwebnovel.com

Nobody noticed her leaving anyway. Not even the maids are busy preparing for tonight.

And honestly? She no longer cared enough to be disappointed. Her phone suddenly vibrated.

The message she had been waiting for finally arrived.

Royal Crest Hotel. Presidential floor. Abigail’s eyes brightened "Yes!"

She nearly smiled for the first time since yesterday. Without wasting another second, she got into the car and left immediately.
