Chapter 6: I’m not your maid
The next morning, the Williams mansion looked unusually lively.
Voices echoed downstairs, heels clicked against the marble floor, and several shopping bags had already been arranged near the entrance before breakfast was even properly finished.
Apparently, preparing for Anna’s birthday was considered a national event in this house.
Abigail sat quietly near the dining table with a cup of tea in her hand while listening to the chaos around her.
"Mom, remind me to buy the silver heels too!"
"You already bought three heels yesterday," Mr William muttered from behind his newspaper.
Anna gasped dramatically. "And? What if my mood changes?"
"That poor bank account," James said dryly while scrolling through his phone.
Anna immediately pointed at him accusingly. "You promised to sponsor my happiness."
James looked. "I think I promised peace. Unfortunately, you rejected it."
Mrs William burst into laughter while Anna pouted.
Abigail lowered her eyes to hide her smile. For that moment, the atmosphere actually felt warm.
Then Anna suddenly stood up excitedly.
"Oh right! We need to leave early before the mall becomes crowded."
Mrs William nodded immediately. "Go prepare yourself."
The family began standing one after another.
And just like that, they started leaving the dining room without even looking in Abigail’s direction.
Abigail sighed. At first, she thought maybe they were coming back for her.
But no.
Anna was already discussing makeup brands with her mother while heading upstairs.
James grabbed his car keys. " Thank Goodness I’m free today"
Mr William answered a business call.
Nobody invited her. Abigail stared at the empty tea cup in front of her before letting out another soft breath.
Nearly forty minutes later, the family gathered near the entrance again.
Anna descended the staircase proudly in an expensive designer outfit while spinning dramatically in front of everyone.
"How do I look?"
"Like my money is disappearing," Mr William replied immediately.
Anna laughed loudly. Mrs William adjusted Anna’s hair lovingly while James leaned lazily against the wall waiting for them to hurry up.
"Can we leave now?" he asked. "At this rate, your birthday will arrive before we even shop for it."
Anna gasped. "Brother, birthdays require patience."
"They also require silence."He rolled his eyes.
Anna looked offended. Just as they were about to leave.. "Wait...."
Everyone turned and was stunned to see Abigail. They don’t even remember her, she stood at the top of the staircase, dressed beautifully.
She wore a soft champagne-colored gown that hugged her figure perfectly without looking overly flashy. Her hair rested naturally over her shoulders, and the simple elegance of her appearance made everything around her less attractive. Even Anna’s expression changed.
Because that gown had been trending online for weeks. A limited luxury brand she had been saving up to buy.
How did Abigail get it? And more importantly, why did it look better on her?
Abigail walked downstairs calmly before stopping in front of them with an innocent smile. "You can’t go without me."
Mrs William laughed awkwardly. "Oh dear, we were actually about to call you."
"Yes, yes," Mr William added quickly. "We thought you were still resting."
James’ gaze lingered on Abigail for a moment longer than necessary before he looked away again.
Only Anna continued staring at the dress suspiciously.
Abigail smiled sweetly. "Really? Then what a coincidence." ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
Nobody knew how to answer that. "Let’s go," Abigail said casually before moving first toward the door.
As she passed Anna, their shoulders brushed. Anna stumbled a little from the unexpected push and looked at Abigail in confusion.
Not because the push was hard! but because Abigail didn’t even apologise.
And for the first time since meeting her, Anna noticed the way Abigail carried herself confidently. Not even like someone overwhelmed by wealth or someone trying to fit in. It unsettled her for reasons she couldn’t explain.
The ride to the luxury shopping centre was painfully uncomfortable. At first, Abigail chose the seat beside Mrs William, hoping maybe they could talk during the drive.
Unfortunately...
"Mom," she whined immediately. "I always sit there."
Mrs William looked trapped "Oh..."
Abigail stared ahead calmly. "It’s okay," she said before moving to the front passenger seat instead.
Anna smiled victoriously and immediately cuddled against Mrs William’s shoulder dramatically.
.....
The shopping centre was massive. The moment Anna entered, attention followed her immediately.
"Miss Anna!"
"Welcome back!"
"The new collection just arrived!"
Employees rushed around her excitedly while she smiled proudly like a celebrity arriving on a red carpet.
Abigail walked quietly behind the family observing everything.
Within twenty minutes, Anna had already bought: three dresses, four shoes, luxury makeup, accessories, perfumes and something that looked unnecessary but expensive anyway.
Meanwhile, the shopping bags kept increasing. Mrs William sighed and turned toward Abigail with a helpless smile. "Dear, can you help carry some of these?"
Abigail looked at the mountain of bags and frowned. for her mother’s sake, she nodded. "Of course."
If she refused, Mrs William would probably carry them herself.
Soon both of Abigail’s hands became occupied. Then Anna casually handed her another bag. "And this one too."
Abigail took it quietly. But another one came kept coming. At some point, Abigail genuinely started looking like a luxury delivery worker.
Anna seemed delighted by it. "You know," she began casually while browsing another rack, "our previous maid was very responsible too."
Abigail raised a brow.
"She organised my shopping bags by colour."
Mrs William looked uncomfortable immediately. "Anna..."
"What?" Anna blinked innocently. "I’m just saying."
Then she turned toward Abigail with a sweet smile. "You should learn from her. She was very efficient."
Abigail stared at her for a long moment before speaking calmly. "Why would I learn from your maid?"
Anna laughed "Aren’t you already acting like one?"
The nearby sales assistants exchanged looks, but none of them found it funny anyway. They were afraid to make a sound. Even Mrs William froze awkwardly.
Abigail looked down slowly at the heavy shopping bags in her hands. Then back to Anna. "Oh," she said softly. "You’re right," she smirked.
Anna looked pleased with herself. The next second, Abigail let go. Every single shopping bag crashed onto the polished floor...
Several people turned immediately. One perfume box rolled dramatically across the floor like it was escaping trauma.
Anna’s jaw dropped. "ABIGAIL!"
Abigail flexed her fingers calmly as though relieved from hard labour. "You said I looked like a maid," she replied innocently. "I suddenly remembered I’m not one."
