Chapter 509: Chapter 509: Retribution

Sylvia Lancaster mustered her courage and rang the doorbell of the Summers Villa.

Sylvia had assumed Melody Summers wouldn’t open the door easily, so she had already prepared to do a lot of talking, determined to lure Melody out no matter what.

But to her surprise, the villa’s main gate opened the moment she rang the bell.

The person who opened the gate was none other than Melody Summers. The villa’s courtyard was unlit, and half of Melody’s face was cloaked in shadow. Her eyes were dark and profound, revealing a hint of coldness that sent an involuntary shiver down Sylvia Lancaster’s spine, making her momentarily forget what she had planned to say.

While Sylvia was still dazed, Melody spoke first. "Do you need something from me?"

Sylvia snapped back to her senses and launched into her prepared speech, feigning extreme urgency. "Melody, Mom is dying! She wants to see you one last time before she goes. You have to come see her!"

Melody: "..."

’Such a filial daughter, this Sylvia... cursing Elaine Hughes to death right off the bat...’ Melody’s feelings were complicated for a moment.

Seeing Melody remain silent, Sylvia grew even more anxious. Her voice trembling on the verge of tears, she said, "Melody, I know you’ve never liked us, but you’re still Mom’s biological daughter! In the face of life and death, what grudge is so important that you can’t let it go?"

"Mom hasn’t eaten or had anything to drink for days. She’s been unconscious, and the doctor says she only has a few days left... While she’s been unconscious, she keeps calling out your name. She just wants to see you one last time. Please, grant her this one wish. Can you really bear to see our mom pass away with regrets...?"

"That’s enough. Stop talking," Melody interrupted with a frown, cutting off Sylvia’s rambling. She nodded. "I’ll go with you. Lead the way."

Seeing Melody agree so readily, Sylvia couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. At the same time, a trace of scorn surfaced in her heart. ’So what if Melody was reborn? She’s still the same old bleeding heart, still cares about relatives she has no real feelings for.’

The two walked in silence through the night. Suddenly, Sylvia spoke up. "Melody... why did you buy so many apartments in The Metropolis Residences?"

Her tone was probing, and as she spoke, she watched Melody’s face intently from the corner of her eye, not wanting to miss the slightest change in her expression.

’I have to find out if Melody was really reborn.’

Melody’s expression was calm. She turned her head to look directly at Sylvia and said slowly, "With the experience from my last life, of course I had to prepare for a rainy day in this one. Aren’t you also trying every way you can to move into The Metropolis Residences?"

Melody’s words struck Sylvia like a bolt of lightning, and she froze on the spot—

She never expected Melody to admit it so openly!

Melody really was reborn!

Seeing Sylvia’s dumbstruck expression, Melody let out a cold laugh.

She turned to face Sylvia, her eyes fixed on her, and said with a smirk, "Why are you playing dumb, Sylvia? Weren’t you reborn a long time ago? So, this new world after your rebirth... are you satisfied with it?"

Every word from Melody was like another thunderclap in Sylvia’s mind. All she could feel was a deafening ringing in her ears!

Her eyes went wide as she stared blankly at Melody, as if looking at something terrifying.

Looking at Sylvia’s pale face, Melody took two steps forward and said in a low voice, "This life, just as you wished, I didn’t return to the Lancaster family. Are you happy? Did you get what you wanted?"

After speaking, Melody seemed to think of something else and said with feigned distress, "Ah, if I had known you were reborn too, I wouldn’t have killed your fiancé, Flynn Adler, so soon. It’s a real shame you two didn’t get to see each other..."

Then Melody’s tone shifted, and she said with a smile, "But it’s no big deal! Flynn Adler is dead, so he’s dead. Besides, you and Ethan Sutton ended up together this life. You two were so in love in the last one, and now I’ve made it happen for you. See? I’m not so bad to you, am I?"

Hearing this, Sylvia staggered back a few steps, her face a mask of disbelief. "It was you... You killed Flynn... How could this be..."

"That’s right, I killed him," Melody said with a nod. As she spoke, she kept a careful watch, and in her peripheral vision, she saw a figure slowly approaching them from the shadows.

Melody pulled her gaze back, her expression still unreadable. She lowered her voice to a whisper only the two of them could hear and said to Sylvia, "Not only did I kill Flynn Adler, I also took care of your biological parents, Hector Hayes and Lily Adler!"

"You didn’t know, did you, Sylvia? Your birth parents were very good to you. They adored their biological daughter. Your mother, Lily, especially. Even before she died, she was still thinking about arranging an escape route for you. What a pity you came back too late. You didn’t even get to see her one last time!"

"Stop talking!" Sylvia screamed, as if she couldn’t take it anymore. At the same moment, Melody felt something cold press against the back of her neck—

A gun was pressed firmly against the nape of her neck.

A deep male voice sounded from behind her. "Put your hands up, or I’ll shoot!"

After a moment of silence, Melody complied, slowly raising her hands.

Seeing Melody cooperate, Felix Ford then ordered her to turn around slowly.

Melody did as she was told. The moment their eyes met, she saw a familiar face—

The man in front of her was identical to the person in the photo Joanne White had sent. He was clearly "Mr. Caelus," the man the police had been hunting!

Melody sized up Felix Ford, and he sized her up in return. After a moment of silence, Felix was the first to speak. "Miss Summers... could it be that you were reborn?"

Melody didn’t answer his question. Instead, she lowered her voice and said, "Weren’t you reborn as well... Mr. Caelus?"

The hand Felix Ford held the gun in trembled slightly. He clearly hadn’t expected Melody to see through his identity.

Standing to the side, Sylvia’s pupils contracted when she heard this. ’Mr. Ford is reborn, too?’

’Didn’t he say he was an enlightened master sent by heaven to help me find the dimensional space?’

’What on earth is going on?!’

Felix Ford stared intently at Melody’s face and asked with a puzzled frown, "...How did you know?"

Melody answered, "If you weren’t reborn, how would you know the exact time the cataclysm would occur?"

Hearing Melody’s words, Felix’s expression flickered unpredictably. A moment later, he snorted. "I didn’t think you’d be this clever..."

Before his voice had faded, Melody continued, "You used your memories from your past life to lie about having the ability to see the future. You preyed on public superstition to build up The Cult, committing all sorts of heinous acts. Aren’t you afraid of retribution?"

Felix was taken aback for a second, then he burst into a loud laugh. "AHAHAHA! Are you kidding me? Retribution? That’s just something the lower class tells themselves to feel better! Only the dregs of society believe in something like that!"
