Chapter 173: Chapter 173: Turning Danger into Safety

Wu Yun never expected that the ever-optimistic and cheerful Bai Yue would slap him, leaving him completely stunned.

In that moment of shock, Bai Yue struggled free, opened the car door, and ran.

There was no way Wu Yun could let Bai Yue leave in a state like this, so he jumped out of the car and chased after her.

"Let go of me! Let go!"

Bai Yue’s scream, choked with sobs, echoed through the underground garage.

Thankfully, since it was the National Day holiday, the underground garage was practically deserted at this hour, sparing Wu Yun some of the embarrassment.

"Bai Yue! Let’s get back in the car and talk this over. Please, just let me explain, okay?"

Bai Yue continued to struggle, but it was no use.

Wu Yun decided to just throw Bai Yue over his shoulder and start walking back toward the car.

"Ah! Put me down!"

"Hey, hey, hey! What do you think you’re doing! Put her down!"

A deep voice boomed from behind him.

Wu Yun turned around, and a bright beam of light hit him in the face, blinding him. He instinctively raised a hand to shield his eyes.

"Put her down! Or don’t blame me for getting rough! There are cameras everywhere. Why make a scene? You can pay a few hundred bucks for this kind of thing on the street! Is it really worth over a decade in prison?"

To be fair, Wu Yun really did look like a criminal in that moment.

Hearing the man’s ’persuasive’ words, Wu Yun put Bai Yue down, though he still held her arm. "Sorry, you’ve misunderstood!" he explained. "We’re just having an argument!"

As he spoke, Wu Yun pointed to the nearby Lamborghini, its door still open.

Only then did the man switch off the powerful flashlight.

It took a few seconds for Wu Yun’s pupils to adjust and his vision to return.

The tall, muscular man in the security uniform stared sternly at Wu Yun, as if he were some kind of sex-crazed predator.

Wu Yun was surprised by the man’s powerful build, but with the main problem still unresolved, he simply scanned the man’s information with his glasses and recorded it.

The man’s stare made Wu Yun’s skin crawl. It was a piercing gaze, as if the slightest wrong move would get his head smashed in.

"Sir! We’re really a couple!"

"Wu Yun! We just broke up!" The guard’s interruption had given Bai Yue a moment to cool down, but she still shouted furiously.

’Alright, so it’s just a young couple having a spat.’

The big man put away his flashlight and simply said, "Mind your conduct. Try not to give people the wrong idea."

With that, he took his long, baton-like flashlight and walked into the elevator bay.

Turning to look at Bai Yue, tears still glistening on her cheeks, Wu Yun felt a pang of both helplessness and heartache.

Wu Yun said resolutely, "Bai Yue, listen to me. There’s really nothing going on! If you don’t believe me, we can call her right now and you can hear for yourself!"

Hearing this, Bai Yue’s anger subsided slightly, though she was still skeptical.

"Really? Then call her right now!"

Without hesitation, Wu Yun dialed the number right in front of Bai Yue. It was the contact whose name the system had helpfully corrected to: Senior Sister Wen Meng!

"RING..."

"Hello, Junior!"

Seeing the tension ease from Bai Yue’s face, Wu Yun breathed a long sigh of relief. ’If it had been Qi Fei,’ he thought, ’the very first sentence would have blown my cover.’

"Senior Sister Wen Meng, can you help me explain something? You left your lipstick in my car! Now my girlfriend is here, and she needs to hear from you that there’s nothing going on between us."

Wen Meng was no fool. Plus, Wu Yun had mentioned he was with Bai Yue today, so she instantly understood the situation.

Although she felt a pang of bitterness, she still said cheerfully, "Oh, my apologies, Junior Wu Yun! Sorry to cause a misunderstanding with your girlfriend! I was just wondering where I’d misplaced that shade of lipstick. So it was in your car."

Wen Meng was telling a half-truth; she really had been looking for that lipstick for days.

A huge weight was lifted from Bai Yue’s heart. But just as she was about to speak, Wen Meng continued, "Junior! You’d better cherish Wu Yun! He’s a real catch! Especially after the welcome party, he’s become the hottest commodity at our school! If you don’t want him, just toss him my way! I’ll happily take him off your hands. I don’t mind at all. Tee-hee~"

Seeing the nervous look on Bai Yue’s face, Wu Yun couldn’t help but give Wen Meng a mental thumbs-up. ’She’s the best wingwoman in all of Huaxia!’

"Senior Sister! I appreciate your admiration for Wu Yun," Bai Yue said, her tone suddenly forceful and determined. "But Wu Yun is mine! No one can take him from me!"

Wen Meng pressed on, "I won’t steal your Wu Yun, but what if I share him with you?"

Wu Yun couldn’t help but facepalm. ’Wen Meng is way too bold.’

Bai Yue, of course, refused and promptly hung up the phone.

Wu Yun grinned. "See? I wasn’t lying! There’s really nothing between us. It’s just a one-sided crush from her."

Bai Yue’s expression turned serious. "This won’t do! I’m going to have to start visiting your school more often! If I don’t make my presence known, everyone will think you’re single!"

Wu Yun glanced at the time, then pulled Bai Yue toward the car. "Let’s talk on the way, okay?"

"But I’m always telling people at school I have a girlfriend! It’s just that after the welcome party, even more people started confessing their feelings!"

After gallantly helping Bai Yue into the passenger seat and closing her door, Wu Yun finally got into the driver’s side.

"Hmph! I’ll let you off the hook for now!" Bai Yue said, tilting her chin up. But her eyes were still slightly red, stirring a strong protective instinct in Wu Yun.

Wu Yun cupped Bai Yue’s face in his hands and gave her a firm kiss. "You have to trust me! Look, the moment the holiday started, I rushed straight to the Capital City. Isn’t that enough to show you that I love you?"

Girls are suckers for that kind of sweet talk. Hearing Wu Yun’s words, a smile finally broke across Bai Yue’s face. "Okay, okay! I know my Ah Yun loves me the most!"

Then, she leaned against Wu Yun’s shoulder and said, "Saranghaeyo!"

...

"Ah Yun! Look here!"

*CLICK.* Bai Yue snapped a selfie of herself and Wu Yun, then immediately posted it to her social media feeds, like Moments and Weibo.

"Surprise! Misunderstanding! Doubt! Cherish!"

Wu Yun glanced over and saw the caption Bai Yue had typed. "As expected of a Chinese Language and Literature major," he remarked. "You have such a way with words!"

Bai Yue said with mock gravity, "Am I to take it that you’re trying to flatter me?"

"Nope! I don’t want to flatter you, I want to pat your butt!"

"Pfft! You’re never serious!"

Wu Yun hadn’t been back to Jingyang for over a month. But when they arrived, Bai Yue stopped him from driving toward Huilu International. "I want to go see your old house!" she said. "I want to see your grandparents!"

As she said this, she looked at Wu Yun guiltily. ’I should have just listened to his explanation instead of fighting with him,’ she thought. ’I’m the only family he has left!’

She took Wu Yun’s hand and smiled. "I should have gone to see your grandparents a long time ago! It’s been three years!"

After parking the car in a spot on the street, Wu Yun led Bai Yue into the old residential complex, drawing astonished stares from pedestrians and other drivers.

*CLANG!* The old security door swung open.

Since Wu Yun had sealed all the windows tightly before he left, the interior wasn’t very dusty.

"Where are your grandparents?" Bai Yue asked, looking around the living room and seeing no memorial portraits.

Wu Yun held Bai Yue’s hand and said softly, "Come with me."

He pushed open his grandparents’ bedroom door. Everything was just as he had left it.

Bai Yue looked at the two memorial portraits on the wall. She didn’t find them gloomy at all. Instead, she felt as if Wu Yun’s grandparents were looking at her with kind, smiling eyes, as if they were saying they were very pleased.
