Chapter 625: Chapter 625: I’ll Handle It for You

Chloe Reed pressed her lips together. After a moment’s hesitation, she typed out and sent the message.

Chloe Reed: [Yeah, I’ll send it when my signal gets better.]

The old woman replied with an "OK" emoji, which was surprisingly trendy.

Chloe Reed scrolled through their chat history, a bitter and sorrowful feeling welling up inside her.

She couldn’t resist touching her throat again. Feeling the firm cartilage beneath her fingertips, she swallowed instinctively, but there was no longer any particular sensation.

But she could no longer speak.

She hugged her knees to her chest, burying her face between them and curling into a small ball.

When Daniel Hayes saw this, his heart ached. A tightness gripped his chest, and he found he couldn’t watch any longer. He left the room to give Chloe Reed the space she needed to process everything.

Dylan Finch didn’t stay either. As the door clicked shut, he thought he could hear the sound of suppressed sobs.

Dylan Finch’s expression froze for a moment before he let out a helpless sigh.

"What kind of messed-up situation is this?"

Once they were a good distance away, Daniel Hayes couldn’t hold it in any longer. "We thought the worst was over, and then that damn Sunny Reed had to go and stir up more trouble. How can she be so vicious? Won’t she be happy until someone’s dead?"

Dylan Finch’s eyes grew cold. "But right now, we can’t let her die. She might know how to make the antidote. Mr. Grant and his wife can’t stay like this forever."

The immediate crisis had only been temporarily averted.

Having failed once, Vera Holloway would surely send people again.

If Walker Grant and Chloe Reed hadn’t recovered by then, what would be the difference from simply waiting to die?

Especially Walker Grant.

He couldn’t see anymore.

His entire world had collapsed.

Daniel Hayes sighed. "Sigh... This is such a cruel twist of fate. How is that vicious woman doing now?"

Dylan Finch replied, "She’s still hanging on by a thread."

"Good enough." Daniel Hayes nodded. "By the way, do you have any leads on the person who helped us before? I’ve asked around, but I can’t find out who he is."

Dylan Finch shook his head. "No leads here, either. It looks like he went into the jungle with Vera Holloway’s people. He probably spotted Chloe a while ago but was just lying low in the shadows. He never made a move against her, so he’s probably not our enemy."

Daniel Hayes scratched the back of his head. "Who the hell is this guy? So mysterious."

Dylan Finch said, "I’ll keep investigating. You know President Shaw, don’t you? Get in touch with him. Ask him to help look into it. Maybe he’ll be able to dig something up."

Daniel Hayes nodded. "Yeah."

...

"What? They failed again?"

A voice tinged with surprise broke the silence. A woman was admiring her nails, her phone on speaker beside her. As she listened to the report from the other end of the line, she tutted. "My, my. That woman really is hard to kill."

"Miss, should we continue?" the person on the phone asked.

The woman chuckled. "Of course, we’re continuing. Watching a little mouse scramble with everything it has just to stay alive... Don’t you find it amusing?"

The words had barely left her lips when the door was suddenly pushed open. The woman’s expression stiffened when she saw who it was, and she quickly hung up the phone.

"Big Brother, why’d you come in without knocking?"

The man didn’t enter, merely standing in the doorway. He looked at her and asked, "You’ve been spending a lot of money on mercenaries lately. Who upset you? Tell me, and I’ll take care of them for you."
