Chapter 13: Ch 13: Divine Interruption
[Foreign Entity invading...]
Those words should have been enough to cripple any normal person with a sense of fear. But Enzo didn’t feel any of it. He rather, dismissed the second screen, the one joining all the nine aspirants.
Then he looked at the main interface with a helpless expression.
[Analysing the foreign entity...]
Even if Enzo wanted to do something, it was futile. Afterall no simple creature can straight up hijack a system maintained by none other than the Voice of the World.
He only prayed for his life. As they say anything else other than life can be recovered with due time. And in a world of magic, that sentence stood out even more.
His eyes perked up as he saw the next information.
[Foreign entity detected: Goddess of Time]
...To say he didn’t feel a sense of relief would be a damned lie!
Whoever she was, Enzo knew the goddess didn’t mean him any harm. In fact, it could even be said that he was slightly grateful to her for giving him this second life.
Slightly. Because he would still have preferred to have Natasha by his side. Beggars, however, can’t be choosers and nobody needed to explain that to him.
Even then, he was quite curious.
’What does she want from me?’
[System’s connection with the Voice of the World has been forcibly severed. Goddess of Time manages to steal the link holding the System and the Voice of the World.]
[~Ding~]
[Link established between the nameless’s (Enzo Riccardo) system and the Goddess of Time. You are now free from the Voice of the World.]
"Ohho?" Enzo made an involuntary sound as his eyebrows perked upwards in interest.
’I think I am starting to get the gist of it...’
His thoughts were interrupted by another notification.
[System retains all its original properties. Its ownership however has been forcibly transferred from one entity to another. Goddess of Time wishes you luck...for She says you never had enough of it.]
Enzo chuckled wryly, the words landing harder than he expected. At the same time, he couldn’t help but to try understand what the consequences of being disconnected from the Voice of the World would be.
From whatever the system had said yet, Enzo fairly was able to make a rough flowchart inside his head. The Voice of the World wasn’t generally the one who handed out quests or managed awakened people’s datas. But whoever it was, they surely had access to all the data since every system was supposed to be connected to it.
In simple words, it could also be said that the system was the algorithm that handled all the tasks or more like it was programmed to do that. The Voice of the World on the other hand, was the Internet that was responsible for handling out system to all the Awakened people. Now whether it was forced to do so or it did out of a sense of duty was something Enzo didn’t know and certainly wouldn’t for a long time.
"And now I have been technically cut off from the Internet and my algorithm now handled by the supposed Goddess of Time."
[~Ding~]
[Bonus: Moved by your sheer will and inhumane courage in clearing the trial, the Great Old One has finally remembered its purpose and the path of bravery it had once swore to follow. It thanks you for correcting its mistake and now has come out of its seclusion to face death like it...like everyone is supposed to.]
Even as those words echoed inside him, Enzo gawked around. At the change that suddenly enveloped the place.
The malicious aura that had been leaking out of the ancient tree ceased to exist and in its place, the same soothing lifeforce that had healed Enzo radiated out of every pore of the Great Old One.
It swept over the corrupted fields, cleansing every bit of the demonic miasma that had been threatening to swallow all the greenery moments ago. Trees stood upwards proudly, vines and grasses blew with the wind, now completely revitalised.
But the effects of the Lifeforce didn’t stop there. It moved further and covered the entire expanse of the Great Forest, rejuvenating it in the process. Even the raging battlefield that had been burning in flames looked as new as if they were just born.
When it finally stopped, the nature itself held its breath as if waiting for something. And it didn’t have to wait long...
Enzo turned towards the tree and in respect, dipped his head in a small bow.
The Great Old One drooped, suddenly looking older than it had been before.
It was dead...
The ancient tree that had founded and protected the Great Forest was now no more.
"This never happened..."
In the tranquility of the night, Enzo slowly muttered.
"In fact, this was one of the unresolved issues by the end of volume one...and now, it gained motivation from me and chose death? Just like that?"
This outcome was the most favourable one, from both the nature’s and humanity’s perspective. Yet, it was hard for him to believe that a stubborn being like the Great Old One had chosen death...from just a mere scolding.
It almost touched his heart. Knowing an ancient being had listened to his outbursts was a form of acknowledgement he hadn’t received in a long while...
Taking a deep breath, he looked above him. The moonlight with no obstruction, now lightened everything in the forest. Enzo even felt a little energised at the touch of the rays, which was quite strange. He however, kept that thought aside thinking that it was just the influence of melancholic joy he felt from moments before.
With a sigh, he mentally ordered the system to show him his interface. It was finally time to see his stats.

’Hmm...is it high time that I start getting concerned for myself?’

Unknown to him who was still lost in his own system, a notification ran out through the entire world of Exodus.
A notification personally catered by the Voice of the World.
Among those countless awakened or partially dormant, one of them was at that moment going through that very quest.
[Global quest: Kill Enzo Riccardo.]
[Reward: Phoenix Summon.]
After reading through it, her face turned towards a certain direction and her gaze fixed directly on a boy who looked about her age but in a completely different state as if signifying the difference between an uncivilised human and a civilized human like her.
Then she looked back at her screen before pulling up a second screen, a lock imprinted with a shimmering keyhole.
After accessing it, she pulled up the names of the members...and just as she suspected, the name was still present.
Enzo Riccardo.
The ninth aspirant.
With a sigh, Princess Valerie glanced back at the boy with a complicated gaze.
Kill him or watch out for a fellow colleague? Afterall, I am the eighth aspirant...
