Chapter 31: The Battle Begins

"Charlotte!"

Charlotte wiped the blood and mana from her mouth before gathering a tissue to clean herself.

She tried to wear a brave look on her face as she did.

"It’s fine, Charles. I expected this. After all, I’m still not fully healed yet. My body requires five more items."

Charles could only watch, stumped.

As an avid reader of Fourth Apocalypse, and an Editor, he very rarely felt helpless.

Even when face to face with the king, he managed to keep his confidence, knowing that he had fought much stronger creatures before.

However, in the face of his wife’s sickness, there was almost nothing he could do.

He was the man behind it, and His strength was far beyond what Charles could even comprehend.

Instead of watching Charlotte try to clean herself, Charles took out the list from his pocket and looked at the last five items on it.

Can any of these be found on the battlefield...

...

Unfortunately, most of the items belonged to mythical creatures who would never live in the Silverblessed Kingdom.

An idea came to him then.

"Can’t you write one of these creatures into existence right in front of us?"

Afterwards, he could kill it and take the item needed.

Unfortunately, Charlotte shook her head.

"It seems He had already thought of that. I tried it once, and it only made me more sick."

Shit...

The more Charles heard about that man, the more his hatred towards him grew.

And the fact that he was the man behind the coalition of kingdoms made him want to destroy them even more.

Charles struggled to meet Charlotte’s eyes. He felt like he was failing her.

"Just wait... I promise I will get you everything you need soon."

The words hung in the air for a few moments.

The tent remained silent, and all that could be heard was the nervous chatter of soldiers from outside.

Then Charlotte spoke.

"Charles, even if you don’t manage to find the remaining items, I will still be grateful to you. You have done more for me in this world than anyone has, even back on Earth."

As he heard this, Charles couldn’t help but become curious.

It was the first time Charlotte had mentioned her life back on Earth. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

"What was your life like back then?"

"It was depressing. I dropped out of school against my parents’ advice, hehe. Can you blame me? I was bullied every year."

"Bullied?" Charles repeated with raised brows. "Bullied for what?"

Charlotte chuckled softly, as though the topic didn’t bother her at all anymore.

"When did bullies ever need a reason to be bullies?" she asked.

The question left Charles with nothing to say.

...

The couple spent the rest of the night together, enjoying food and drinks.

They shared the more joyful stories of their time on Earth, and for a while, they forgot that they were in a world where threats lurked around every corner.

Eventually, they were drawn back to reality by the sound of horns blaring outside.

Charles was the first to rush outside.

Once he got there, he saw that numerous armed figures had also started leaving their tents.

The sound of the horns came from the outskirts of the camp, and the news swiftly trickled towards the centre.

A messenger on a horse soon arrived and passed on the news to the prince and generals.

"The enemy are crossing the field! We thought they would wait until daytime, but they’ve started their attack at night!"

Prince Cain’s eyes went wide, but he didn’t allow himself to become disorganised.

He swiftly gave orders to all the men in the camp, preparing them to enter fighting formation.

This would not be a battle of many tactics, but rather one of pure strength.

Amidst the chaos, Prince Cain sought out Charles. freewёbnoνel.com

He found the man standing outside Charlotte’s tent alone.

In his hand was the Red Dragonscale Longsword.

Where did he even find such a weapon?

The prince brushed that thought aside for now.

"Fetch my sister. The battle is about to begin," he said royally.

Charles didn’t move. Instead, he simply shook his head.

"Charlotte won’t be participating in this battle."

"..."

All Prince Cain could do was stare at the man in front of him with wide eyes.

"W-what? Didn’t you bring her with us because she was our ticket to victory? We would be fools to leave a Master Grade fighter here in camp. The generals won’t accept this!"

The prince grew increasingly frustrated.

What frustrated him even more was the calm smile that the man wore on his face, despite being shouted at by the Prince of the Realm.

Charles waved a hand dismissively.

"As long as she is nearby, the Blackrain forces will not make it across the field. I will make sure of it."

He didn’t waste another word and left the prince standing there, stumped.

Alright then, it’s time for this battle to begin.

...

On Greyford Plains...

Charles stood on the front line of the first row of defences.

There must have been one thousand men standing beside and behind him.

People looked at him as though he were crazy.

Most people of importance stayed further back, as it was well known that being on the front lines was the most dangerous position.

Yet this adventurer had chosen a place right at the front.

As Charles stared across the dark field of grass, he could see the enemy slowly marching towards them.

The Silverblessed forces were significantly outnumbered, not just in infantry but also in cavalry.

Charles could practically feel the nerves spreading through the men around him.

In their eyes, they had been led into a death trap.

Yet Charles didn’t see things this way.

As he stood there with his sword in hand, he soon heard the order to charge coming from the Blackrain forces.

The Silverblessed forces echoed orders of their own.

At that moment, the two armies charged across the field towards one another, letting out deafening war cries that could be heard from kilometres away.

Amidst that noise, Charles spoke a single sentence.
