Chapter 1151: Chapter 1151: Taking the Child Away
When Janelle Tollman went upstairs, the room door was already open, waiting for her.
Her mom stood at the door, examining her with a gossipy look.
"Mom... why are you still awake?"
"Waiting for you, did you go on a date?"
Janelle gave her mom a playful glance, entered the room to change her shoes, and attempted to steer the conversation away: "Are the kids asleep?"
"What time is it? They’ve been asleep for a while."
Before Janelle could say anything more, her mom stood aside, suppressing her amusement, and continued to ask, "I saw you from upstairs, honestly now, did you go out on a date?"
Feeling guilty, Janelle turned her gaze away, walking into the room as she said, "Mom, what are you talking about? Didn’t you see which Boss Sutton it was? There was a bit of an issue at the store and he helped to handle it, so I treated him to dinner and he gave me a ride home, that’s all."
Her mom still looked at her with suspicion, saying: "I know it was him. I’ve been meaning to ask you. Are you two seeing each other?"
Janelle: "No way."
"Don’t think you can fool your old mom. I can still see what’s going on with you young folks. He’s spending his free time at the store with you and the kids, it’s obvious he has feelings for you. Plus..."
Her mom paused for a moment, glanced at the child’s room, and pulled Janelle closer to her, lowering her voice, "Anyone with eyes can see that Chase looks a lot like him. Is he..."
Her mom didn’t finish her sentence, but her questioning eyes awaited Janelle’s response.
Janelle naturally understood the underlying meaning, and after a bit of hesitation, she nodded.
"Really? So the boyfriend you had back then was actually him?"
"No..." Janelle didn’t quite know how to explain all this, after a few seconds of silence she directly said, "But he does have the intention to marry me."
Mrs. Tollman listened, somewhat concerned, and said, "I’ve seen him a few times at the store, he seems quite steady. But he’s probably a businessman, right? He likely has more thoughts than most people. Have you made sure to understand him thoroughly?"
Janelle pursed her lips and said, "I’ve thought about these things too, but I feel he doesn’t have any bad intentions. His family is quite wealthy, he can’t really get anything out of me, so there shouldn’t be much to worry about."
Mrs. Tollman had a different opinion, saying: "Who says he gets nothing from you? What about the kid? What if he just wants to trick you into marriage to get custody of the kid?"
Janelle was stunned for a moment, but recalled Arthur Sutton’s behavior over time, which didn’t seem like a calculated attempt to take the child away from her.
She could sense that he genuinely wanted to integrate into this family, beyond just wanting to connect with the kid.
Seeing Janelle silent, Mrs. Tollman sighed and said, "I’m just reminding you. You interact with him more, you know him better than I do. If he’s not just after the child, I think he seems nice, at least he takes good care of people."
After a brief pause, Mrs. Tollman added, "Seems like it’s been quite a while since we’ve seen Wayne. Did you two fall out?"
"It’s nothing like that. Brother Archer went abroad for an exhibition."
Mrs. Tollman: "I actually think he’s pretty nice, he’s been around to care for you and the kids for so long, I always thought you two would end up together."
Janelle silently pondered for a moment, then asked: "Mom, what do you think I should choose?"
Concerning an uncertain future, she felt insecure, scared that her decision would lead them away from their current peaceful life, and even more fearful that after marrying Arthur Sutton, he would completely change and take the child away from her.
Thinking about all this, she lacked the courage to take that step.
Mrs. Tollman chuckled lightly, saying: "Well, if you ask me, I’d obviously say Wayne is the better choice, you’ve been together for such a long time, you understand each other well, and the kid is familiar with him. But I can tell, you actually like Arthur Sutton, right?"
