Chapter 1148: Chapter 1148: Protective
The assistant elbowed Janelle lightly and teased with a smile, "Boss lady, are you already starting to defend him?"
Janelle’s face turned even redder, and she said, "Defend what? Hurry up and get to work."
"Yes, yes, Mr. Sutton looks like a gentleman through and through. You and our beautiful boss lady are truly a match made in heaven."
Janelle gave the assistant a fierce look before the assistant snickered and slipped out of the workspace.
Janelle’s heart was pounding like a drum, unable to calm down for a long time.
People used to tease her like this about Wayne Archer, but at that time, her heart was not as restless as it was now.
As she was thinking about this, Wayne Archer walked up the stairs.
Janelle hurriedly composed herself, somewhat puzzled, and asked, "Brother Archer, why did you come so early?"
Wayne looked a bit apologetic as he said, "...Sorry, I drank too much yesterday."
Janelle smiled, "I know, I called your assistant. Was the event yesterday successful? You must have had a great time at the party to get drunk. I think it’s the first time I’ve heard of you getting drunk."
"...Yes, the event went smoothly." Wayne didn’t seem to want to discuss this and, after a moment of silence, asked, "I saw from the call log that I called you again last night. I hope I didn’t say anything inappropriate?"
Janelle shook her head, "You kept saying ’I’m sorry’ for no reason. I figured you must be drunk, so I called your assistant to confirm."
Wayne was taken aback for a moment, but seeing Janelle’s reaction, he didn’t seem to think much of it, so he didn’t continue the topic and asked, "When I was coming over, I saw Arthur Sutton’s car at the corner. Did he give you a ride?"
Mentioning Arthur Sutton, Janelle’s expression became somewhat awkward in front of Wayne because she knew Wayne actually didn’t want her to have any dealings with Arthur.
But she and Wayne had to draw this boundary sooner or later. It would be better for both of them to make it clear early on.
Thinking about this, Janelle nodded and said, "...He wants to spend more time with the child."
Wayne looked a bit crestfallen, "So...are you planning to accept him?"
Although Janelle hadn’t determined her inner answer, she nodded again at this moment, "He said he’s not just looking for me because of the child but also for me. He hopes our family can reunite...I am seriously considering it."
Saying these words was actually just to make Wayne give up and not waste any more time on her.
Dragging him along would only make Janelle feel guilty and indebted every time she saw him.
Wayne couldn’t speak for a long time after hearing this, with many emotions in his eyes, yet it was hard to grasp what he was thinking.
Janelle pressed her lips together, not knowing how to say anything that might make Wayne feel better.
"Janelle, as long as you’re happy, I will respect all your decisions. He is indeed more capable of taking care of you all."
Without waiting for Janelle to say anything, Wayne had already turned and quickly walked downstairs.
Janelle took a deep breath. Although it hurt Wayne deeply, it’s better to endure short-term pain than prolonged agony.
It’s better than letting Wayne hold on to hope but never getting the result he wanted.
For a long time after that, Wayne didn’t come to the shop.
But Janelle saw online that he was attending several art exhibitions abroad, probably busy with work during this period.
As they gradually drifted apart, Janelle no longer reached out to contact him.
Although she regretted losing a friend like Wayne, she also knew that if one person in a friendship harbors feelings of love, it’s impossible for them to remain just friends forever.
She just hoped that he could find his own happiness in the days to come.
