Chapter 862: Chapter 862: Insincere Greetings
The Ford Family had fallen into decline, while The Sterling Family’s status in the Imperial Capital grew ever more solid. Moreover, several members of The Sterling Family hadn’t married yet, and not even had a partner. Naturally, they were sought after by all the major families, among whom Simon Sterling was far more popular than his own son and two nephews.
Though Simon was older, his looks, status, and charisma were more attractive to young girls than the younger Wyatt Sterling, particularly appealing to the early-twenties crowd.
When Simon brought his family to the Kane Family’s banquet, all the unmarried young ladies present shyly cast flirtatious glances at him.
"Dad’s charm isn’t small," Serena Sullivan said with a smile as she noticed the glances directed at Simon.
Simon coughed twice and looked at Claire Sullivan beside him, "At my age, what charm could there be?"
"Well, your age and others’ are completely different."
Simon possesses timeless beauty, the kind that doesn’t age!
Claire Sullivan took over the conversation; it was her first time attending a banquet with Simon. Others didn’t need to inquire about her identity; merely seeing her resemblance to Serena would reveal who she was.
"Is that so?" Simon turned his head and smiled at Claire.
This smile elicited squeals from nearby girls; a man this handsome must be heaven’s favored.
Claire stared at the smile in Simon’s eyes, stunned for a moment, without replying.
Their relationship had eased, but it didn’t mean past grievances could be written off.
She still hadn’t figured out what to do with Simon!
"Mr. Sterling, Mr. Grant." Mrs. Kane’s voice came as she approached with Nina Monroe, smiling.
"Having you here is truly an honor."
Mrs. Kane was delighted; she was no longer the humble Mrs. Kane in front of The Dowager Kane.
The Ford Family was now under her command, and she was the hostess of today’s banquet.
"You’re kind," Simon replied according to etiquette.
He didn’t like the Kane Family; even after The Dowager Kane and June Kane had their troubles, he still disliked the Kane Family.
The current Mrs. Kane had been persistently currying favor with their family. He had once speculated about her intentions but grew increasingly wary after seeing the photos Serena provided.
After exchanging pleasantries, Simon moved to mingle with others, as did Ethan Grant and Wyatt Sterling, leaving the mother-daughter duo, Claire Sullivan and Serena Sullivan.
"Claire, I never expected you’d come."
After Simon and the others left, Mrs. Kane reached out to hold Claire’s hand; they appeared familiar, but Claire felt quite uncomfortable. She and Wendy Monroe hadn’t seen each other for years, and their relationship had faded.
Previously, Mrs. Kane had invited her multiple times, but Claire hadn’t gone. This enthusiasm was puzzling.
"Hmm!" Claire awkwardly smiled.
"It’s been years, seeing you now living so well with Mr. Sterling brings me comfort."
"Back then, if not for June Kane, you wouldn’t have been separated from Mr. Sterling and endured so much suffering," Mrs. Kane said sentimentally.
Her words seemed to be for Claire Sullivan, with nothing seemingly amiss.
While Claire found them oddly resonant, Serena felt Mrs. Kane was deliberately stirring trouble between Claire and June Kane.
June Kane was already in jail, so what’s the point of such provocation? Had she done something guilty towards Claire Sullivan? She repeatedly emphasized, making Claire hold a grudge against June Kane.
"Serena." After finishing her conversation with Claire, Mrs. Kane smiled and tried to take Serena’s hand. Serena didn’t give her the chance, lowered her hand, and stepped aside.
