Chapter 104: The Adventurers Guild Compromised

Outside of Shadow Spire Citadel, Fate’s home in Valoria, the morning sun began to rise on a destroyed battlefield. Adventurers were seen checking the battlefield since it was reported that a massive number of undead confronted the army of Count Victor Dupont, who was assassinated in a combined attack by both the church and the crown last night.

Both the prince and the church denied these accusations, but the proof and confessions provided by an unnamed priest and the former steward of the prince proved that they are responsible.

As Duke and his party looked at the newspaper that published all of these important facts, he could not help but throw the paper away in disgust as he read about the revelations of the nobles’ centuries-long crusade to cull the human population so that they can stay in power. Not only that, but the church was involved in this plan as well.

Looking at his party, Duke said to Sandy and Noah with a fierce look in his eyes, "I can’t believe that the church and the king are involved in the mass murder of civilians. This is not going to end well for those in power. Sandy, what did your new friends dressed in those red uniforms tell you about all of this? Those people seem to be able to acquire information faster than any information broker I have ever seen before."

Sandy smiled as her fox tail slapped the ground in excitement. That’s right—Sandy is a fox demi-human. With excitement, Sandy said to Duke, "Duke, my friends are called the Faithful, and they said that this information is one hundred percent true. They even provided a magic recording stone showing Count Victor Dupont admitting to this practice. The nobles and the church are doing this to maintain a smaller population so that no one can rebel and challenge their authority. The last time this happened was five centuries ago, so it’s no wonder something like this has been removed from the history books."

Duke sneered as he said to Sandy, "Sandy, as an A-ranked Adventurer, you should know better than to trust history books. Everyone who knew that something like this happened was probably killed off by those in power. How else can the nobles maintain their power? But we need to finish this quest and see what happened to the rebel army. As for your new friends calling themselves the Faithful, this makes me wary of them. Those weirdos have been springing up everywhere lately, and it creeps me out."

Sandy just ignored this insult to her friends, but if Duke had looked at her closely, he would have been able to see a hint of madness in Sandy’s eyes as he insulted the Faithful.

Duke looked around the battlefield with his two companions. When they walked into the site of the actual battle, what awaited them was a literal lake of blood, with various bits of bones and flesh mixed into it.

Duke walked into the lake of blood and found that it rose up to his waist. From this amount of blood, there must have been at least ten thousand soldiers in this army if they could leave behind so much blood but not a single dead body. Duke looked at Sandy and yelled to her, "Sandy, can you clear away this blood lake with your water magic?"

Sandy nodded her head with a smile as she lifted her hand and channeled her magic. The blood lake began to rise up into the air as water vapor. Then Sandy dispersed the blood as a harmless fog, allowing it to float downwind from the site of the battle. Duke hoped that all of this blood did not attract too many monsters, but he knew his hopes would be in vain.

Duke did not care in the least about the monsters—let the lower-ranked adventurers deal with those small fry.

Duke, accompanied by Sandy and Noah, began to scour the battlefield for clues on the disappearance of the soldiers. After twenty minutes of looking around, Duke spotted his first clue. Around the trunk of a tree, he found a horse with bite marks all over it. The skeleton of the horse was picked clean—not even muscle was left on the bones of this horse.

Duke looked at Noah and smiled as he called him over. "Noah, get over here and tell me what you think of this horse skeleton."

Noah walked over to the horse skeleton and began to examine it. Noah was the rogue and scout of their group, so it was his job to figure out what monsters they were looking for.

Noah touched the horse skeleton and said to Duke, "Duke, it looks like this was the work of undead, but I can’t be too sure yet. There are a lot of monsters that can eat a corpse like this clean. We should keep looking."

Duke agreed as he began to look around more. After several more hours of not finding anything, Duke stumbled upon a definitive piece of evidence.

It was a body of an undead, caught in between a tree stump and a ditch in the ground. Pulling his sword out of its sheath, Duke beheaded the undead. Then he looked at the uniform that the undead was wearing.

Duke was surprised to see that this undead was from the forces of Count Victor Dupont. Duke yelled at Sandy and Noah to get them to come over. "Sandy and Noah, get over here! I found the answer we were looking for—it is undead after all."

Noah and Sandy quickly joined Duke as they looked at the body.

Duke said to Noah with a severe look on his face, "Noah, it looks like not only did a large horde of undead wipe out the rebel forces, but the dead were then made into undead."

Noah nodded as he poked the body and said to Duke, "Duke, it looks like you’re right. This is indeed a soldier from the Count’s forces. Not only that, the traces of necro energy on his body are very recent and extremely powerful. This is the work of more than just one necromancer. The only entity that I’m aware of that has more than one necromancer serving them would be the Shadow Monarch from the cursed lands. If that creature has made it to the Southern Hampshire Plains, then that means that all of Westridge could be in danger. An undead horde has not been seen outside of the cursed lands in almost eight years. Now that this foul abomination is near here, we need to report this development to the Adventurers Guild."

Again, both Noah and Duke did not see the hint of madness flash through Sandy’s eyes at the mention of reporting this news.

Sandy looked at both Duke and Noah and said to them, "Duke, we should just drop this quest and forget about pursuing this. This is Duke Fate Grimsever’s business, and we should not meddle in the feuds between nobility."

Duke looked at Sandy as if looking at a stranger, and so did Noah. Duke turned serious and looked at the fox demi-human Sandy and said, "Sandy, we have an obligation to report this, especially since the higher-ups in the guild tasked us with solving this issue. If Duke Fate Grimsever is involved with this, it could be the ammunition that the guild needs to move against that monster. How can so many undead be around his city, yet no one has been attacked yet? Well, now we have proof that something foul is going on in Valoria, and we have an obligation to deal with it."

Sandy could only sigh as she said to Duke and Noah, "Fine, let’s go and report it and be done with this nonsense."

Duke nodded his head as both he and Noah began to walk ahead of Sandy to go back to the city to report this development to the guild. As Duke was walking with Noah at his side, neither of them expected to suddenly be— freewebnσvel.cѳm

*Squelch*

Sandy, with a look of pure madness on her face, impaled Duke through his heart with her tail. As for Noah, she killed him by covering his head with a bubble of water. It amazed Sandy how easy it was to kill someone without them making a sound, simply by drowning them.

Duke looked at Sandy as he asked her, "Sandy... why?"

Sandy smiled as she said to Duke, "I told you that you should let this go, but you had to insist on reporting the undead. Well, now you have to pay the price. Our god, the Phoenix Lord, will not tolerate any interruptions to his plans."

Duke just collapsed onto the ground, wondering when Sandy became so crazy.

Sandy quickly fed the corpses of her friends to a few wild monsters and headed to the student branch of the Adventurers Guild.

Then, when Sandy came into a back room of the guild, she knelt on the ground in front of Sam, the receptionist for the guild.
