Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Misunderstood by Him
Charles Prescott asked, "I heard something happened to Sharon. How is she?"
He wore a concerned expression.
But Anne Sutton could only see the hypocrisy in his eyes.
’Back when she was still with him, he’d wanted to give Sharon Sutton to Nathan Fawcett. Who would believe he was actually concerned about Sharon now?’
Anne Sutton said, "She’s fine. It’s nothing serious. I’m surprised a man as important as Mr. Prescott would be concerned."
After speaking, she didn’t linger and walked straight through the door.
Nathan Fawcett was standing by the window. He was wearing loose-fitting clothes today, and they seemed to hang empty on his frame.
Anne Sutton had no idea what he was thinking, so she broke the silence. "You’re back early?"
Nathan Fawcett looked up at her and asked, "How is your sister?"
"She’s doing fine," Anne Sutton said, sitting down. "My parents are looking after her."
Nathan Fawcett sat on the sofa, his dark, cold eyes fixed on her. His stare made Anne Sutton uncomfortable. "Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked.
The butler was also standing by Nathan Fawcett’s side, looking as if he wanted to say something but was hesitating.
Nathan Fawcett said to Anne Sutton, "Ms. Sutton, can I trust you?"
Anne Sutton found his sudden question very strange. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"I’m not sure what you mean, Mr. Fawcett." ’Could it be because I was just talking to Charles Prescott at the door?’
Anne Sutton said, "I didn’t say much to Charles Prescott just now."
Nathan Fawcett looked at her and gave a small, complex smile. "I’m just curious. Are you on my side, or Charles Prescott’s?"
Anne Sutton looked up, staring at the man in disbelief.
"Of course I’m on your side."
’Isn’t my position obvious enough?’
’Charles Prescott is my enemy. I’ve always made that perfectly clear!’
She found his suspicion utterly baffling.
Nathan Fawcett said, "Actually, I know Charles Prescott came to you. He told you not to have my child."
Anne Sutton’s heart skipped a beat.
She looked at Nathan Fawcett in disbelief. She couldn’t believe he knew even that.
The color drained from Anne Sutton’s face. She had thought...
’She had thought that because of his poor health, he paid no attention to anything. But now, it seemed that wasn’t the case at all.’
Nathan Fawcett was now standing behind the sofa. He leaned down, his cold fingers tipping up her chin. "Even though I knew he told you that, I still believed you would have this child for the sake of your own future."
Anne Sutton said, "If you already knew, then what are you worried about?"
The butler stood to one side, holding a pill bottle. Nathan Fawcett raised his gaze, glanced at it, and then asked Anne Sutton, "Then tell me, what is this?"
Anne Sutton looked up and saw it was the pill bottle Sharon had brought her a couple of days ago, the one she used for her vitamins.
Anne Sutton said, "I often work overtime and I’m not in the best of health, so I take vitamins sometimes."
Nathan Fawcett watched her, the corner of his mouth twisting into a sneer. "I thought, after my little hint, a smart woman like you would know to tell the truth. It seems you didn’t value this chance. You’re still lying!"
At this, Nathan Fawcett’s gaze turned cold.
He hated lying women more than anything.
Anne Sutton had been telling the truth, so his words only left her more confused. "I don’t know what you’re talking about. Is there some kind of misunderstanding?"
The butler handed her the pill bottle. "Please, take a look for yourself, Madam."
Anne Sutton opened the cap and looked inside. There were vitamins, yes, but mixed in with them were birth control pills.
Seeing this, Anne Sutton’s brow furrowed. "How is this possible?"
"So, Ms. Sutton knows what they are!" Nathan Fawcett stared at her. "Since you have no intention of bearing my child, why are you here wasting my time? Or are you and Charles Prescott in this together? Did he send you here to ensure the Fawcett family line ends with me?"
"Of course not!" Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett, sensing for the first time that this man was truly, genuinely angry.
She said, "Mr. Fawcett, please, let me explain! My sister gave this to me. I haven’t taken any. I haven’t even looked inside it for the past two days. I had no idea!"
"Your sister?" Nathan Fawcett asked. "Are you close with your sister?"
Anne Sutton froze for a second, then nodded. "Yes."
She couldn’t lie about that.
She and Sharon were genuinely close.
’She just couldn’t believe Sharon would do something like this. Could Father have put her up to it?’
Nathan Fawcett said, "Then what else is there to say? You’re close with her. She had an accident, and you dropped everything, even your work, to go take care of her. Now she gives you something, and you say you have nothing to do with it? Am I supposed to believe you?"
"But it really has nothing to do with me," Anne Sutton said. "Yes, Charles Prescott did approach me. He told me not to have your child. But no matter what he said, my resolve never wavered. We signed a contract. I’m not stupid enough to trust a man who treated me badly and then run over here to deceive you. If I couldn’t even tell who was more important, why would I have come to you in the first place?"
Nathan Fawcett watched her. Her eyes were sincere as she spoke, but whenever he remembered her long history with Charles Prescott, and how she’d suddenly appeared in his life, he found it impossible to believe her.
Nathan Fawcett said, "Go home. From this moment on, I don’t want to see you again."
’Anne Sutton couldn’t believe it. Charles Prescott, her own father—they had both tried to talk her out of it, and she had never given up on her plan to have Nathan Fawcett’s child. And now, because of a simple misunderstanding, Nathan himself was kicking her out.’
She stood up. "Nathan Fawcett, this is a misunderstanding. I’m not trying to get out of having your child, I swear. I even went for a check-up specifically to help me get pregnant sooner. I thought you understood me."
"Understand what about you?" Nathan Fawcett said dismissively. "I don’t know you well at all. We’ve barely known each other. And you were recommended by Charles Prescott. How could I possibly trust you? I only have two months. I can’t afford to play these games with you."
’Being deceived at a time like this... what’s the point?’
’If she doesn’t want to do this, it’s better to just let her go now!’
Anne Sutton looked at him. "I thought you would believe me. I never imagined... This is ridiculous."
Nathan Fawcett looked at her, then stood up. "I’m going to rest."
With that, he had the butler help him upstairs.
Anne Sutton started to follow, but the butler glanced at her and shook his head, signaling that she shouldn’t press the issue.
The butler knew Nathan Fawcett’s temper better than anyone. With things having reached this point, Nathan Fawcett was likely truly furious. Pestering him further would be useless.
Anne Sutton glanced at the pill bottle in her hand and headed straight back to the hospital.
Sharon Sutton was still in her hospital room, and Mrs. Sutton was there with her. Seeing Anne Sutton walk in, Sharon asked, "Sis, what are you doing back here?"
