Chapter 27: Chapter 27: I’m Heading Back First
Anne Sutton looked at the man, the corners of her lips turning up. "Let’s eat."
With that, she sat down, picked up her bowl, and started to eat.
Nathan Fawcett asked, "Going out?"
"Mhm." Anne’s face was clouded with worry. "My sister... I need to keep a close eye on her for the next couple of days."
’Dad’s useless; I can’t count on him. If he were to look after Sharon, he’d probably just provoke her into trying to kill herself again.’
’And it’s not right to dump everything on Mom, so I have to help share the burden.’
Hearing this, the butler said excitedly, "Ma’am, we’re going to the hospital as well. Why don’t you come with us?"
Nathan frowned at the butler’s words. "Who asked you to butt in?"
He clearly didn’t want Anne to know his plans.
He had always maintained an air of mystery around her.
Anne looked at him, realizing he wasn’t keen on the idea. She didn’t press the issue, simply saying to the butler, "That’s alright. You’re busy. I’ll drive myself. It’ll be more convenient that way."
After eating, Anne left without waiting for them.
The butler looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, "Sir, you obviously wanted her to come with you. Why didn’t you just admit it?"
Nathan retorted, "Why would I want her to come with me?"
The butler: "..."
’I wonder who it is that’s always asking what Anne is doing whenever she’s not around,’ the butler thought.
’He clearly wanted her to come along!’
However, given Nathan’s bad temper, the butler didn’t dare say anything more.
...
Anne arrived at the hospital and went straight to see Sharon Sutton. Before she even entered the room, she heard David Hayes’s voice from inside. "Sharon, please don’t be angry anymore, okay? The thing with Lucy Todd is all in the past. We really haven’t been together recently. If she hadn’t come looking for me that day, I wouldn’t have even seen her."
"..." Sharon sat on the bed, looking at David.
David pleaded, "Trust me. Just give me one more chance, okay?"
His sincerity was so overwhelming that Sharon was on the verge of believing him.
She asked, "Why were you with her in the first place?"
"She was the one who seduced me!" David claimed. "I told her I only have you in my heart, but she kept pestering me. And when I was drunk..."
Anne had heard enough. She walked through the door.
Seeing her, Sharon sobered up a little. "Sis."
David was also startled to see Anne. "Sis."
"Who are you calling ’sis’?" Anne said. "Don’t come here again, and don’t let me see you. Otherwise... don’t blame me for what happens next."
’Saying it was Lucy Todd who seduced him!’
’Just based on those words alone, Anne knew he was no good. His story was full of holes, the kind of lies that would only fool a naive girl like Sharon!’
Seeing how firm Anne was, David Hayes had no choice but to leave.
Sharon sat on the bed. "Sis, you got here so fast."
"Why did you let him come over again?" frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
"He kept apologizing to me," Sharon said. "I think he’s genuinely sorry and knows he was wrong."
Hearing her sister’s foolish words, Anne felt a vein throb in her temple. "And you believe that? He said he was drunk and someone seduced him. Do you really think that’s possible?"
Sharon looked at Anne, and her next words nearly made Anne explode with anger. "I think it’s possible. He’s usually very good to me, and that Lucy Todd doesn’t look like a good person anyway. Sis, I really like him. I don’t know what to do. I want to forget him, but I can’t."
"Are you completely love-struck?" Anne looked at her foolish little sister, absolutely furious.
’How can she be so obsessed?’
’She’s already been hurt this badly by a scumbag, yet he says a few words and she believes him all over again.’
When Anne criticized her, Sharon fell silent.
She went quiet, looking completely listless.
Although she didn’t argue, seeing her like this, Anne felt like she was looking at her own disappointing past self.
It left a bad taste in her mouth.
...
After eating, Sharon fell asleep, and Anne sat beside her, keeping her company.
She had taken the last two days off work to be with Sharon.
With so much going on at home, she really wasn’t in the right state of mind to focus on her job.
Before long, Mr. and Mrs. Sutton arrived.
Mrs. Sutton had brought some food she’d made for Sharon. "Oh, Sharon is still sleeping!"
Anne said, "She’s already eaten. I brought her something when I got here."
Mrs. Sutton said, "This must be hard on you."
She knew Anne had a lot on her plate and had to take care of her sister as well.
Seeing her mother being so formal with her, Anne replied, "It’s no trouble. It’s what I should be doing."
’If I don’t do something to help Mom, relying on my irresponsible father will probably be the death of her.’
...
Sean Sutton stood to the side. Noticing Anne looking at him, he asked, "What’s with that look?"
Anne replied, "You know exactly what it means."
Sean Sutton: "..."
’If the family wasn’t depending on her right now, I’d really give her a beating,’ he thought.
Anne sat to the side, not speaking to her father either.
Sean, however, seemed to remember something. He looked at Anne and asked, "Have you thought about what I told you before?"
"What thing?" Anne played dumb.
Sean said, "About not having a child for the Fawcett family."
"..." Anne said, "I’m going to pretend I never heard that, Dad. And don’t you ever say it again! Being with Nathan Fawcett is a decision I’ve already made. I’m with him now, I’m his wife. He doesn’t have long to live. Giving him a child is something I ought to do."
Sean Sutton looked at her. "Anne Sutton, we’re just concerned about you! Don’t be so ungrateful."
Anne looked back at him. "I don’t need this kind of concern! I think you’re just worried about losing face with the Prescott Family, and that’s why you’re forcing me to do things I don’t want to do!"
She was already with Nathan Fawcett; she hadn’t left herself any way out.
Even though she didn’t like him, she was still with him!
’Wasn’t it all just to prove a point to Charles Prescott?’
’And now, her whole family was trying to talk her out of it!’
"You..." Sean was furious at her complete defiance. After all, he had already promised Charles Prescott’s father that he would, no matter what, get Anne to see things his way.
Anne glanced at her father. "Forget it. I’m leaving."
With that, she walked out the door.
She didn’t stay in the hospital room any longer.
Sharon wasn’t in critical condition anymore, and besides, she didn’t want to see her father.
Anne went to check on her own patients before heading home.
When she arrived home, she saw Charles Prescott coming out of Nathan Fawcett’s place.
Seeing him at the Fawcett residence at this hour, Anne asked, "What are you doing here?"
