Chapter 26: Chapter 26: What Is She After?

"Are there any good men left in this world?" Sharon Sutton said. "We sisters seem to have met all the scumbags."

She had figured that since Charles Prescott was rich, it was only natural for him to be a bit of a playboy.

But she never expected David Hayes, who had nothing, to be just like Charles Prescott.

’She couldn’t help but feel disillusioned with human nature!’

Mrs. Sutton said, "Of course there are."

Anne Sutton sat to the side, listening to her mother console Sharon, and decided not to go home for the night.

She sent the butler a message, telling him she wouldn’t be back tonight.

When Nathan Fawcett came out of the shower, the butler walked in and said, "Madam says she won’t be coming home tonight."

Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett looked up at the butler. "Did something happen to her?"

She had seemed exceptionally anxious when she left.

’It must have been something urgent.’

The butler said, "Her sister attempted suicide. She’s at the hospital now, and Madam needs to stay with her."

"Suicide?" Nathan Fawcett asked. "Why would she do that?"

Because of his own poor health, Nathan Fawcett looked down on people who attempted suicide.

After all, when they tried to kill themselves, they never once considered that some people in this world desperately wanted to live but couldn’t.

...

「The next morning」

It was nearly dawn by the time Anne Sutton returned to the Fawcett estate. As she entered the bedroom, she heard Nathan Fawcett coughing from inside.

With his poor health, coughing was a regular occurrence, and it sounded as though he didn’t have long to live.

Anne walked in and saw him lying in bed. She went to take a shower and change her clothes before coming back out.

She didn’t disturb him and simply lay down beside him.

Nathan Fawcett’s coughing never ceased.

Anne had no doubt he looked like he could drop dead at any moment.

She was dead tired and couldn’t care less about the noise; she just wanted to get some sleep. But suddenly, Nathan Fawcett’s hand clutched at her nightgown.

Anne froze for a moment. Turning her head, she found Nathan Fawcett’s brow furrowed tightly as he gripped the front of her nightgown.

’When he was asleep, he lost that violent aura. He was actually quite handsome.’

She couldn’t tell what he was muttering in his sleep.

After listening closely, Anne realized he was calling for his mother.

...

She never expected him to have such a side. It left Anne at a complete loss.

She suddenly recalled that even though she’d known Charles Prescott for so long and knew most of the Fawcett family’s affairs, she had never heard anything about Nathan Fawcett’s biological mother.

Chairman Fawcett did have a girlfriend who would occasionally visit the Fawcett estate, but she hadn’t married him and wasn’t his legal wife, so she couldn’t be considered Nathan Fawcett’s mother.

Seeing how much he was suffering, Anne couldn’t bear it any longer and reached out to hug the man before her.

She gently patted his back and shoulders, as if she were truly his mother.

Before long, Nathan Fawcett actually quieted down.

...

Ever since he fell ill, his sleep had been poor.

He rarely ever slept soundly.

When Nathan Fawcett woke up a little after ten in the morning, he saw that Anne Sutton had returned.

She was holding him, her face nestled in his arms.

Due to his poor health, his body was perennially cold.

Yet the woman in his arms was soft and warm.

He glanced at the clock on the wall and thought about pushing her away, but the reassuring scent on her made him stop himself.

’He felt he was being strange.’

He didn’t even like this woman. After all, she’d had that past with Charles Prescott.

But his body was honest, as if it couldn’t be without Anne Sutton.

The moment he was near her, he became deeply infatuated with everything about her.

...

When Anne Sutton woke up, she assumed Nathan Fawcett would have already left. Instead, she found him leaning against the headboard, flipping through a book.

Anne sat up and looked at him. He coldly lifted his head and shot her a glance. "What time did you get back last night?"

"A little after five," Anne said. "Why are you still here?"

Nathan Fawcett retorted, "Are you surprised that I’m here?"

"..."

Anne looked at him. ’All right,’ she thought. ’Come to think of it, he’s usually at home anyway.’

He was a sick man, after all.

Leaning against her pillow, Anne sized him up, her curiosity piqued. "Besides seeing doctors, what do you usually do?"

Hearing her, Nathan Fawcett snorted coldly. "What do you think a dying man has the energy to do?"

"Shouldn’t you take this last chance, now that you’re so close to death, to do all the things you’ve never done?" Anne said. "It’s better than being cooped up at home every day. No wonder your temper keeps getting worse."

"What did you say?" Nathan Fawcett glared at her.

Anne choked on her words and shut her mouth.

’Fine!’

’People with bad tempers hate it when others point out their flaws.’

Seeing her cower because of him, Nathan Fawcett changed the subject. "How’s your sister?"

"She’s fine now," Anne said. "She just can’t wrap her head around it. I really don’t get why men are so disgusting, unable to control themselves. They already have girlfriends, but they still have to fool around on the side."

Nathan Fawcett said, "Go on with your rant, but don’t lump me in with them. I’ve never done anything like that."

Anne looked at Nathan Fawcett. "Well then, want to take advantage of your last days to go out and try a few?"

Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett’s face darkened. "Are you that eager for me to die so you can inherit my fortune?"

"Of course not," Anne denied.

’I haven’t even gotten pregnant yet. Of course I want him to live a few more days.’

’She was terrified he would drop dead.’

Because she was at the hospital last night, they hadn’t been able to make an attempt.

The thought made Anne feel a deep sense of regret. Another perfect opportunity missed.

Nathan Fawcett saw her staring at him and felt her gaze was incredibly complex. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

Anne said, "The doctor said you only have two months. I’m just wondering if that’s enough time for me to get pregnant."

"..." Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett said, "You’re certainly dedicated. So eager to get pregnant with my child."

"Of course," Anne said. "I’ve always been very dedicated to my work."

’If not to get pregnant, why else would I be sleeping with him every day?’

’For his sickly, frail body?’

Nathan Fawcett knew what she was thinking but didn’t call her out on it.

He said, "The doctor is coming later. It’ll be a good time for her to give you a check-up." frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

Anne said, "I had a check-up at the hospital a couple of days ago. There’s nothing wrong with me."

"So you’re saying I’m the one who can’t perform?" Nathan Fawcett looked at her, his eyes narrowing.

He hated it when people said he couldn’t perform; he always felt like she was looking down on him!

Anne shook her head. "No, no."

Nathan Fawcett shot her a look, got out of bed, and walked out.

Anne checked the time and realized she had to get up and make him breakfast, so she didn’t go back to sleep.

She went to the kitchen and made breakfast for Nathan Fawcett.

She had taken the day off and would have to go to the hospital to see Sharon later, so she made some food for her sister as well.

When she came out, she saw Nathan Fawcett sitting there, staring at her as if she were his mortal enemy.
