Chapter 25: Chapter 25: So Hard to Please
Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said seriously, "Did you know that negative emotions are contagious?"
"Is that a thing?" Anne Sutton asked.
"Yes. You’re affecting me now, and it’s bringing me down."
"Then what should I do?" ’I can’t believe this guy,’ Anne Sutton thought. ’Not only does he have a bad temper, but he’s also a busybody.’
’I’m just in a bit of a bad mood today and was zoning out for a bit. Is he going to lecture me for that?’
’I didn’t notice it when I was in a good mood, but now I’m really starting to think Nathan Fawcett is hard to deal with.’
Nathan Fawcett asked, "What are you thinking about here all by yourself?"
He’d originally thought he didn’t have time to get involved in her affairs.
But seeing her so down, he couldn’t help but ask.
After all, they were living under the same roof.
He always wanted to figure out what was on her mind.
"Nothing much," Anne Sutton said. "Just some things at the hospital."
"What, did someone at the hospital give you a hard time?" Nathan Fawcett’s voice darkened.
’He’d like to see who was bold enough to mess with his woman.’
"Not really," Anne Sutton said. "It’s just too embarrassing. I don’t know how to tell you."
"Just say it. My patience is wearing thin."
Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, "It wouldn’t do any good even if I told you!"
...
As they were going back and forth, Anne Sutton’s phone rang. She took it out, glanced at the screen, and saw it was a call from her family.
"Hello?" Anne Sutton answered.
Mrs. Sutton’s voice came from the other end. "Anne, your father found out about what happened with Sharon. He came home and beat her." freēwebnovel.com
"What? How did he find out?"
"Probably someone from the hospital told him." Since Anne Sutton worked at the hospital, Sean Sutton usually paid attention to its affairs.
Anne Sutton frowned. "And Sharon? How is she?"
"Sharon’s been in her room this whole time and won’t come out. I’m so worried. Can you come home and check on her?"
Hearing this, Anne Sutton said, "Okay, I’m on my way."
After hanging up, she glanced at Nathan Fawcett. "Something’s come up with my family. I have to go home for a bit."
Nathan Fawcett stared at her. "Now?"
"Something’s happened to my sister," Anne said. "I’m worried about her. I just want to go check on her."
’Sharon was already so upset today!’
’After getting beaten by their father on top of everything, I can’t imagine how heartbroken she must feel.’
’Besides, my job of making dinner for Nathan Fawcett is done!’
’I want to go home.’
Seeing the worried look on her face, Nathan Fawcett didn’t stop her and let her go.
Anne Sutton walked out the door, got in her car, and drove straight to the Sutton residence.
When she got home, her mother was standing outside Sharon’s door, speaking to her in a low voice.
There was no response from inside.
Seeing this, Anne Sutton simply called for a maid to bring a key, then opened the door and went in.
Just as she feared, she saw Sharon lying in the bathtub. She had cut her wrist, and a lot of blood was flowing out.
Anne Sutton was horrified by the sight, and Mrs. Sutton screamed in terror, "Sharon!"
Anne Sutton rushed over and immediately tried to stanch the bleeding.
Mr. Sutton heard the commotion and rushed over. When he realized Sharon Sutton had tried to commit suicide by slitting her wrist, he was stunned and quickly called for an ambulance.
...
After being rushed to the hospital and receiving emergency treatment, she was out of danger.
But seeing her lying in the hospital bed looking so weak, Anne Sutton’s heart truly ached for her.
’After all, she’d been through something similar—her family hadn’t taken her side and had even beaten her. Who could possibly come to terms with that?’
It was just that Anne Sutton’s personality was different. She would never handle things the way Sharon did.
’She’d be more inclined to drive the man who betrayed and humiliated her to suicide himself.’
...
When she came out, she saw Mr. Sutton speaking to Mrs. Sutton. "I ask you to stay home and raise the children, and this is how you do it? How old is she? You didn’t even know she was secretly dating someone, and some scumbag at that. Look at the state she’s in! Great. Now the Suttons are going to be infamous at the hospital."
And this was the very hospital where Anne Sutton worked.
Sean Sutton felt so ashamed he couldn’t even hold his head up.
’What kind of daughter did he raise? Getting into a fight over a man, and now making a scene by attempting suicide... doesn’t she feel any shame?’
Mrs. Sutton had always been the type to suffer in silence. She knew Mr. Sutton worked hard, so she would endure whatever he said to her when he came home.
So now, she stood silently, not saying a single word, just quietly taking Mr. Sutton’s tirade.
But Anne Sutton couldn’t stand by and watch. She walked over, pulled her mother behind her, and glared at Sean Sutton. "Why are you blaming Mom, especially at a time like this? Isn’t it your fault as her father that Sharon is in this state? If you hadn’t hit her, would she have done this?"
Seeing Anne Sutton so fiercely defending her mother, even defying him, Sean Sutton snapped, "When did it become your place to interfere when adults are speaking?" frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
"You can’t talk to my mom like that!" Anne shot back. "What, just because she’s good-natured, that gives you the right to bully her?"
"Is that any way to talk to your father?" Sean Sutton demanded.
"The fact that I’m even willing to speak to you at all is me being polite." Since she’d found out about her father’s affair, Anne Sutton had been deeply disappointed in him and had no desire to speak with him.
Seeing how unyielding Anne Sutton was, Sean Sutton was actually a little intimidated.
’After all, the family was counting on her now!’
’No matter how long Nathan Fawcett had left to live, right now, Anne Sutton was the one with the power.’
He said to Anne Sutton, his tone softening slightly, "I’m just anxious, aren’t I? I’m worried about Sharon, too! If your mother had kept a better eye on her, she never would have met a scumbag like that or gotten into this mess."
"She’s an adult. Dating is her right. Meeting a scumbag is the scumbag’s fault. Instead of going after the guy who hurt her, you just take your anger out on your own family? Dad, you’re such a chauvinist! When other fathers find out their daughters have been wronged, they stand up for them. You’re the only one who thinks it’s all the daughter’s fault. Having a father like you... I’m truly disappointed."
Mrs. Sutton came over and tugged on Anne Sutton’s arm. "Anne, let’s go see Sharon. Your father works hard every day. He’s just worried about Sharon, that’s why he wants to be strict with her. He’s afraid she’ll get hurt again. Say no more!"
’She was terrified they would start a huge fight and become a laughingstock.’
Anne Sutton glanced at her mother and walked into the room with her.
Sharon was already awake. Lying on the hospital bed, she saw Anne Sutton and Mrs. Sutton and said, "Sis, Mom."
Mrs. Sutton walked to the bedside, looked at her, and said sadly, "Why would you do something so foolish? Your dad was just trying to teach you a lesson. He did it for your own good."
"He’s right," Sharon Sutton said. "I’m useless. I was blind to have met a scumbag like him."
"You’re so silly," Mrs. Sutton said. "You’re still so young! It’s not worth it, not for a scumbag like him. You know that, right? You’ll meet so many better men in the future. What does this one even matter?"
