Chapter 130: Chapter 130: Chairman Grant’s Request
Nathan Fawcett didn’t answer her, simply opening the door and walking into the office.
Ian was sitting there, watching TV.
When he saw them return, he said, "Daddy."
Nathan Fawcett glanced at him and asked, "Is the TV show any good?"
"Mhm."
Anne Sutton stood to the side, looking at Nathan Fawcett, not knowing what to say.
Nathan Fawcett ignored her as well. He sat right down and started to work.
That evening, Anne Sutton and Nathan Fawcett returned home. The housekeeper had made dinner, and they were eating.
Before long, the butler came in and said, "Sir, Chairman Grant is here."
"Let him in."
Hearing the name Chairman Grant, Anne Sutton figured she knew why he was there; it was undoubtedly about the company.
She had just managed to put the matter out of her mind after coming home, but hearing Chairman Grant’s name made her start worrying all over again.
A moment later, Chairman Grant walked in behind the butler.
He glanced at Anne Sutton, then at Nathan Fawcett, and said, "Ethan."
Nathan Fawcett said, "Have a seat."
Chairman Grant sat down, and the housekeeper brought him a bowl and chopsticks.
Chairman Grant said, "No, thank you. I just came to ask a few questions, and then I’ll be on my way."
He looked very unhappy.
After all, he had held such high hopes for Ethan Linden.
Anne Sutton watched the scene, her hand tightening around her chopsticks.
She could feel it; now, even Chairman Grant couldn’t stand the sight of her.
Chairman Grant asked Nathan Fawcett, "Ethan, I came here today to ask you one thing: are you still planning on taking over your father’s company or not?"
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett looked up at Chairman Grant. "Of course I am."
"If you are, then send her away." Chairman Grant glanced at Anne Sutton and said to Nathan Fawcett, "You’re destined for great things, so you have to consider the bigger picture. I don’t know what’s going on between you two, but she was your sister-in-law. You can’t marry her! As for what happened today, I can smooth things over with the shareholders for you. But... you must cut ties with her."
He was willing to be the bad guy if he had to.
After all, what he wanted more than anything was to see Ethan Linden take over the Fawcett Group.
Nathan Fawcett said, "I appreciate your good intentions, but things between Anne Sutton and me are already settled. I’m going to be with her. That’s not going to change."
"Fine!" Chairman Grant said. "Seeing you like this, I get it! I won’t waste my breath saying anything more! From now on, don’t come to me about company matters."
With that, Chairman Grant stood up and left without another word.
Anne Sutton called out, "Chairman Grant."
She wanted to stop him, but Nathan Fawcett grabbed her wrist, not letting her follow.
Anne Sutton sat back down and looked at Nathan Fawcett. "What are you doing? For him to come here and say all that, he’s already being incredibly supportive. You should have at least tried to smooth things over."
Nathan Fawcett said, "Just eat your dinner."
He picked up his chopsticks and placed some food on Anne Sutton’s plate.
Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett. It was impossible to get through to him.
She could only eat in silence.
In truth, she was deeply grateful that Nathan Fawcett was so determined to be with her, that he refused to give up on her.
After all, he valued her greatly.
He made her feel what it was like to be cared for.
But...
...she just couldn’t stop worrying about the Fawcett Group.
After dinner, Nathan Fawcett took Ian upstairs to give him a bath.
Anne Sutton stood by the window, looking out. From there, she could see a lively scene at the Prescott family’s home. President Sterling was there today, too.
Charles Prescott had been on the verge of ruin, but Nathan Fawcett’s actions had given him an opportunity...
’Charles Prescott escaped disaster, and now they’re celebrating!’
Anne Sutton walked out of her house. As she neared the Prescott home, she could hear Charles Prescott having dinner with President Sterling.
President Sterling was saying, "Mr. Grant must be having a real headache right now! He wanted to side with Ethan Linden, but Ethan just won’t play ball!"
Another person spoke up. "Ever since the old chairman passed away, Mr. Grant has had it in for us. He’s always trying to pull President Prescott down. A guy like him should just retire early."
Listening to them mock and ridicule Chairman Grant, Anne Sutton thought of the old man and felt her mood sink.
But she just couldn’t persuade Ethan Linden!
And she had to watch helplessly as the Prescott father and son reveled in their success.
At this thought, Anne Sutton went back to her room, grabbed her things, and went downstairs.
Nathan Fawcett was in the study. He had already finished bathing Ian and was now on the phone.
The butler came in and said, "Ma’am has gone out."
"Where did she go?" Nathan Fawcett asked.
The butler replied, "Perhaps what happened today weighed too heavily on her, so... she chose to leave. Sir, about this matter, are you sure you don’t want to tell Ma’am the truth?"
He was Nathan Fawcett...
If people knew that, then even if he was with Anne Sutton, no one at the company would have the right to say anything.
Nathan Fawcett was silent for a moment before saying, "It’s not time yet."
"I’m a little worried now. If the madam finds out you’re getting involved in the Fawcett family’s affairs, won’t she be angry?"
"I know what I’m doing."
"Then should we go find Ma’am and bring her back?" the butler asked, concerned.
He had a feeling that Anne Sutton had left because of what Chairman Grant said.
Nathan Fawcett said, "Let her be. Let her have some time to herself."
’As long as she doesn’t marry Charles Prescott, I can tolerate this.’
Anne Sutton drove to her own place near the hospital.
She hadn’t been idle these past few years. She had used her own money to buy an apartment, renovate it, and had moved in quite a few of her things.
Sometimes, when she didn’t want to go back to the Fawcett family home, she would stay here.
It was close to the hospital, which made it convenient for work.
Coincidentally, her annual leave was almost over, and she had to get ready to go back to work tomorrow.
The next morning, in her mother’s hospital room, Anne Sutton stood to the side as Mrs. Sutton looked at her angrily. "I heard you gave the bracelet back to Justin Shields?"
"..." Anne Sutton thought of the bracelet that had been taken and nodded. "Yes."
Mrs. Sutton said, "Fine, I can’t control you anymore! I heard you were about to marry Charles Prescott yesterday. Anne Sutton, have you lost your mind? I told you to leave the Fawcett family, why won’t you ever listen?"
Sharon Sutton said, "Mom, don’t be angry. Let my sister make her own decisions! Your health is more important."
Mrs. Sutton said, "I really can’t control her anymore."
She had always been worried that Anne Sutton wasn’t doing well, which was why she had hoped she would stay far away from the Fawcett family and had specifically arranged for her to be with Justin Shields.
But she never expected...
Anne Sutton looked at her mother and said, "Please don’t be angry."
Just then, Sean Sutton walked in. He looked at Mrs. Sutton and said, "What’s wrong? Why are you so furious?"
When Anne Sutton saw her father, she remembered how he had protected the Prescott father and son in the meeting room yesterday, and she didn’t feel like saying a word.
’It felt like any father-daughter bond between us was gone for good.’
Seeing Mrs. Sutton so angry, Sean Sutton started to speak up for Anne Sutton. "Actually, I think Anne has her own ideas about what she wants to do. And that Justin Shields wasn’t that suitable for her anyway."
