We walk to the breakroom, and I let the front desk nurse know we don’t want to be disturbed. She promised to let staff know and give us the time we need. I see Kiara roll her eyes, but they are not as cold as they were when she saw me lurking before. It gives me hope that I can salvage this, but I know I have a lot of explaining and groveling to do.
"Would you prefer we do this somewhere else?" I ask in a soft voice, but she just shakes her head and enters the breakroom. I sigh. This is going to be really difficult. I absolutely fucked up, and maybe she’ll decide to formally reject me. Ash growls. He doesn’t like this thought, but it’s the reality and I need to be man enough to see it before it happens. I need to accept the possibility of me fucking this up so much, that she would not want to have anything to do with me.
"So, what do you want to talk about, Alpha?" Kiara asks, turning to face me with her arms crossed. Her posture tells me that she is not going to be talked over easily.
"I wondered if we could sit down?" I ask, gesturing for the chairs. She makes a tutting noise with her tongue, but sits down nonetheless.
"And now?" She asks. I sit down opposite her, folding my hands on the table. I want her to know I feel no hard feelings towards her. How could I? She did nothing wrong. This is on Selene entirely.
"Like I said - I want to apologize for my behavior. You did not deserve it, and I was an ass. I’m sorry, Kiara." Her eyes soften, just a smidge and I can tell she is not as far gone as I thought just a minute ago.
"Noted. Thank you. Anything else?" Her answer has me chuckle inside. She is trying to play tough and hard to get. I wonder why she is guarding herself so much. I know why I do it, and it makes me wonder.
"Can’t we talk? Like just get to know each other?"
"No. I have no desire to get to know you, Alpha. I just want to be a regular member of this pack, as your mother already invited me to be a member and I accepted. I have no idea why you would want to apologize, although I appreciate it, it makes no difference to me." I close my eyes, taking a deep breath. This woman is going to be the death of me, I am sure of it.
"Well, I really want to get to know you. Would that perhaps be possible?" I ask, trying to keep my voice under control. This is getting under my skin. Why wouldn’t she want to get to know her mate? I am here. I am willing to work on this. But here she is - practically rejecting me.
"That would also be a no thank you, Alpha. I do not see the point in you getting to know me, as that would be very one sided. You have made your stance on the mate situation clear as day, and when you are ready we can reject each other and you’ll be free to do whatever you wanna do. I do not care, and I do not want to be part of it."
She stands up, bowing and my heart breaks. It’s hard enough to hear her keep calling me Alpha, when all I want is for her to call me by my name or an endearing nickname. But now she is bowing to be as well. Fuck! Ash is going crazy. He wants me to claim her. To mark her, so she has nowhere to go and no choice but to accept me. But I know that will not work. It could have the opposite result, and I am not willing to risk it. She has to give herself and her heart to me on her own free will. And by the Goddess I will not lose another mate. I know I realize this too late, but I hope it’s not so late that I have no way to take it back. I want her. With everything I have and everything I am. I want her to be my Queen. She is already my Queen. She. Is. Mine! Even if she doesn’t know, want or feel it yet.
"If that is all, Alpha. I have duties to get back to." She opens the door, and I let her go. She is clearly not ready to face me yet. I mind-link my head doctor and let her know of the situation and ask for her to keep an eye on Kiara. She promised to do so and congratulated me on finding my second chance.
I then shift channels and reach my commanding officer, asking him to let a couple of guards be at the hospital at all hours when my mate is working here. They are not to be noticed and they are to keep her in their eyes range at all times. The only time I don’t want guards near her is when she is in the packhouse. He also promises to make it happen, and I hang back until I see them enter the hospital.
Then I go to my office. I need to talk to my aunt and uncle about their daughter. Something is up with her, and I am finding out what it is, so I can work on getting in her good graces again. No one is going to say about me that I was the asshat Alpha who lost two mates because he fucked up so much. I also plan to start sending her small things. Trinkets to make her feel welcome in the pack, and I have the perfect thing in mind for tomorrow morning.
She will most likely be at the hospital after her retreat to the river, and there will be some new things for her when she gets there.
In my office I call Trina first.
"Trina, I need a new doctor’s coat for tomorrow morning. She is a size medium, and the name is Kiara. And I’ll need the whole yard kit for her as well. Everything you can think of a new doctor will need, I want it there."
"That’s going to be a costly affair, Alpha, but I can make it happen of course. May I ask who she is since you would make such a request?"
"Your future Luna and Queen."
"OH! Well then. It’s going to be free. Nothing is too good for our future Luna. Don’t worry about it, Alpha. We will have everything ready for her tomorrow. And please call me if there is anything else."
"I will have frequent calls to you in the future. I want her to feel welcome and I want to spoil her in the shadows for now."
"She’s not falling for your charms, Maze?" Trina is a childhood friend, and one of the few who would dare call me by my name. I also know she is alone now, otherwise she would never do it.

I put the phone down, jotting down a few ideas for future gifts and gestures. For example - I want her to have unlimited access to drawing things. Pencils, colors, paper etc. I also want to know her style in clothes and get her what she needs and wants. She is going to stay in our pack forever, so she’ll need more clothes than what she brought. "This is he."
"Maze here. I need to speak to you about Kiara."
"Is she okay?"
"She is fine. I need to know what the hell happened to her in your pack and why she doesn’t feel like a wolf, but she is a shifter."
"Maze."

"She should be the one to tell you."
