Chapter 207: Chapter 207 You’ll Never Be The First Choice
Kiara
I didn’t encounter Maze the rest of yesterday, and I continued with my duties as a doctor. I met a lot of different pack members, and most of them just treated me like a regular doctor, but some of them knew who I was and most were not really happy with my presence in their pack.
Some of them told me about Mira Rose - Maze’s first mate and more than one told me I would never be his first choice. I would always be second. In the shadow of a woman he lost. Someone he had loved and been friends with ever since childhood.
I went home with a lot of thoughts, and I felt even more confused than before. I decided to let the doubt be a benefit to him, but I would also do some digging on my own. I went to bed with my laptop, and there I read up on the incident two years ago.
Silver Moon in mourning
Today the Silver Moon pack is in mourning after the vicious attack of rogues yesterday. They were surprised while their ranked members were out of the pack, and rogues saw an opportunity to attack and have an easy target. Unfortunately for them, the Alpha of Silver Moon, Maze Gold-moon Blue, returned and entered the fray along with his esteemed parents, former Alpha King Matthew and current Luna, but former Queen Abigail. They chased the rogues away, and killed most of them in the process, but it was not with costs. Warriors and innocent pack members were killed, but the hardest loss for the pack was the Alpha’s mate, Silver Moon’s Gamma couples daughter, Mira Rose. She was allegedly found in the forest, fatally injured by the Alpha, and died in his arms. They were found together in the treelines, as his parents felt his agony when his heart broke from the mate bond being destroyed. ƒreewebɳovel.com
Pack members are expressing their condolences to their Alpha, while Maze is not talking to anyone. Not even his own family. We have on good authority that Queen Amber of the Dragons and Magic Folk, has tried to contact her brother, but he does not want to speak to anyone. She even asked if he needed her there, but he again refused. Former King and Queen of Silver Moon, Matthew and Abigail, have this comment for the press;
"We are deeply touched by the loss of the future Luna and Queen, but our hearts are mostly with our son in this difficult time. He is hurting, and he needs time to heal his heart and his mind. It is a fierce pain to feel a mate bond breaking from rejection, but to hold one’s maye in one’s arms and feel the life leave them while the bond breaks and one’s heart does the same. That is something indescribable. I ask for everyone to give him peace and space for now."
A single tear slid down my cheek. We heard about the attack back then, and my parents attended the funeral of the pack members who fought and Mira Rose. They were devastated on behalf of Matthew and Abigail, but mostly on behalf of Maze.
They had spoken to him shortly, but he had not said much in total. The loss had been too close and the grief was still fresh. I remember them speaking to Amber as well. She told them how she had given him the title of King, and they had been surprised no one had told her at the pack. Abby later explained no one knew.
Maze had not told, and he hid his aura, but he couldn’t when he woke after the tragedy. He was too weak, and that’s when they knew, but it was too late to tell everyone who attended the funerals. Maze didn’t want them to, and they followed that.
I put my laptop away, having a fitful sleep during the night. I kept tossing and turning, and by the time dawn came I gave up sleeping. I don’t know if it was just myself, or if the mate bond had something to say, but I felt like I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t sleep.
I decided to get dressed and go explore my new home. For now at least this packhouse is where I live, and I want to know my way around. I know I am living on the Alpha floor, and Maze’s office should be on this floor as well. I want to test a theory, and mostly I really want to put the doubt the pack members put in me yesterday down.
Outside my bedroom I look to both sides, and everything is quiet. Just as I expected it to be. I follow my nose to a room that smells strongly of Maze. This must be his bedroom. It’s only a couple of doors from my own, and I wonder why I have not noticed that before. I shrug. Probably because I have not actively tried to notice who is living here. I walk past his bedroom, further down this side of the floor.
Alpha’s office usually is right besides or close to his bedroom. Three doors down I smell his scent again mixed with papers and dust. I chuckle. It’s the same mix as with dad’s office. His scent keeps sending small waves of butterflies in my stomach, but I try to keep it down. I don’t want to get excited, only to have everything crushed.
I try the door, and it’s unlocked. Pushing it open I see the typical layout of an office. A big desk with a rug under, and an office chair on one side, with guest chairs on the other. To the sides are different shelves and storage for papers and folders.
On the table is a laptop, a lamp and different papers scattered. Frames of what I assume to be pictures stand in either corner of the table. Just inside the door to the right is a leather couch, coffee table and two leather chairs as well. I walk inside, to look around, feeling slightly guilty, but I just have to know. On the table the frames contain pictures, just as I expected. One of them is of a younger Maze with aunt Abby and uncle Matt, and a young woman who I assume is Amber. I have not seen them for years, so I can’t distinctly remember what she looks like, but her likeness to Abby is striking.
