Chapter 205: Chapter 205 Resisting and Failing
Kiara
The staff at the hospital was so sweet when I came in. I had taken my papers with me just in case, and as it happened they needed the extra hands. A nurse showed me around and stayed with me for the first two hours. It felt so natural to do what I have been training and studying for, and I always loved the dynamics between doctor and patient. It’s calming, and rewarding when you get to treat people and see them get better under your care.
I get all the emergency cases, like the little girl I am currently with. She fell on her head from a tumbling gym at her school, and the nurse there wanted to make sure she didn’t have a concussion. We heal fast, even as children, our counterparts helping us although they are dormant.
"Okay, sweetie, I will use this light to look into your eyes, and I need to do some tests. None of it will hurt, and I promise to find you a little something afterward." The nurse showed me where all the lollies and toys for children were as one of the first things. She looks at her mom who smiles and nods.
"Do as the nice doctor says, baby." She looks back at me with nervous eyes.
"Okay. I’m sorry." I shake my head.
"Don’t be sorry, sweetie. It can be a little scary to be at the doctor. It’s quite alright." I turn on the light, showing her on my hand first. "See, this will not hurt at all. I promise." She nods, sitting completely still for me. She follows the light fine, and her pupils have normal reactions, so I don’t think anything happened. Just to be sure I tell the mom to keep an eye on her for the rest of today, and she can have as much ice cream as she would like to.
"Do you want a lollie or a little toy?" I ask sweetly as I am done with my examination. She taps her finger on her chin thinking.
For the majority of the session, I have felt someone’s eyes on me, and by the reaction of Winter, I do not need to guess who it is. Why he is here is anyone’s guess, but I am going to pay him no mind. He can go to hell! Or so I keep telling myself, knowing full well if he tried just a little I would be absolute pudding in his hands. I hate that! Why does the mate bond do that to someone? Why would the goddesses make sure that I fall for a guy - well, my body does, when my brain is screaming for me to run in the opposite direction, who doesn’t really want and is clearly not over his dead ex? I roll my eyes internally, still ignoring the burning eyes of my idiot mate. The little girl giggles as her eyes move past me.
"Why is Alpha drooling over there, Mommy?" She asks, and her apt description of what he is doing is hilarious. The mother blushes.
"Shh, honey. He is probably looking for someone." Our eyes lock, and I know she knows who exactly he is looking for. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
"He doesn’t seem grumpy today." The girl says with brutal honesty, and it makes me wonder.
"Is Alpha grumpy a lot, love?" I ask her, tilting my head to the side showing her how interested I am.
"He wasn’t. But then he was. He growls at me and my friends if we are playing too loud outside of the pack house." I raise an eyebrow. What a charmer, huh? To the girl, I laugh and promise to find that lollie she decided on.
As I turn around my eyes lock on my mates, and I know the warm smile I kept on for my patient goes cold. I have nothing left for this arrogant piece of... I close my eyes. I do not want my thoughts to go this way. Mom and Dad say I have a giant temper, which they are quite right in, but right now I can’t let it overtake me.
Maze steps forward, a forlorn expression on his face.
"Kiara, could we maybe talk?" He asks as he walks towards me. I raise an eyebrow.
"I am sorry, Alpha. I am very busy with my patients." I answer, walking past him to where I know the toys and lollies are. I open them, knowing he is right behind me.
"I want to apologize." He says, and I stiffen. Apologize? I wouldn’t have thought he was capable of showing remorse or seeing his own faults. I close my eyes. Winter’s ears perk up. She is really intrigued and I am just slightly annoyed. Why would he come here and apologize and make everything difficult again? I just settled with the thought of working as a regular member. I stop myself. He didn’t say "Make you Luna." He said to apologize. Maybe he’ll even reject me so I can move on.
"Alright. Meet me in the break room in a couple of minutes." I answer, closing the cabinets again. He snorts.
"And have you run away while I wait in there? Oh no, dear mate. We can walk in there when you’re done with your patient. I’ll wait out here." There is the arrogant asshat I loathe so much. Well great, he is still in there. I just have to provoke him enough to...
’You really don’t want him to reject us, Kiara. You want him to swoop us off our feet and mark us. Don’t even try to fool me. I know what is in your heart. It’s mine too.’
’I just want to be accepted, Winter. Not necessarily swept off my feet, but accepted and loved for who I am. And I’m sincerely not sure he is capable of that.’
’He was hurt...’ fгeewebnovёl.com
’Doesn’t give him an excuse to hurt everyone else.’
I go back to ignoring Maze, as I snub Winter back and bring the girl her prize. She lowkey squeals at the sight of her candy, and I tell her what a good girl she has been for me and how proud she should be of herself. She nods, taking all of my words in, but her eyes keep moving over my shoulder.
"Want to say something to Alpha?" I ask, moving so she can see him clearly. Her mother tries to interject, but the girl doesn’t seem fazed by him at all.
"Why do you growl at me and my friends when we play outside?" She asks, sucking on her candy. Maze’s mouth drops open, and he only closes it when he sees my amused expression. This is a hoot. To see him frazzled.
"Uhm. Do I?" He asks back, scratching his head.
"YES! You tell us to go away. We are an... Ann.. Loud." I smile.
"Annoying?" Her eyes sweep to me and she nods. "Did Alpha really call you annoying? You were just playing." I keep going, knowing I am hitting his buttons.
"I’m sorry, little one. I won’t do that again. But can I ask you to play somewhere else when I am working, because I get so distracted by all your fun? I also want to have fun then." His answers drew a genuine smile from my lips and I cursed myself. The girl smiles really big, and you can see some of her teeth are missing, which only makes her even more adorable.
"You could come play with us?" She says, her eyes going wide at her own daring. Maze chuckles and crouches down on the floor looking the girl in the eyes.
"Would you really play with me if I came out one day?" He asks her and she laughs.
"YES!" Maze looks at me, a cheeky glint in his eyes and suddenly I am filled with dread.
"Okay, how about his, Miss?"
"My name is Maple, Alpha."
"How about this Miss. Maple. This right here." He points to me. "Is my mate, and she doesn’t think we can have any fun here. Could we join you tomorrow afternoon for some fun?" Maple and her mother gasps.
"Luna, we didn’t... We’re so sorry." I put my hands up.
"I am no Luna, and it is quite alright. I would love some fun Maple, if you will still have me?" She jumps from the bed, hugging first Maze and then me.
"I will tell my friends. Bye Alpha, bye Luna." She skits out of the hospital, her mother hurrying after her, throwing looks back at me and Maze. Her eyes are hazed with confusion and amusement.
"How about that talk now, mate?" Maze asks, and I equally want to kiss him and smack him. Winter is more on the kissing side, but that’s not going to happen anytime soon. I need to make sure I am not risking my heart being torn out - again. I am not only Maze’s second chance. He is mine.
