Chapter 168: Chapter 168 Ending This

Chase’s POV

We’re flying as fast as we can to get to Amber. Both Calor and Loch are aware we need to get there sooner rather than later. We both follow the mate bond we have with Amber, and it leads us to the middle of the woods east of the castle. We arrive just in the nick of time it seems, as three dragons, one being my traitorous father, lurks over Ignis. They are ready to strike when Calor and Loch manage to get the attention of them and get the two of them on their wings. I notice the last dragon’s right wing is damaged, probably thanks to Ignis. That’s my girl!

In the air we interlock in a duel with the two other dragons, and I keep wondering who the other two are. They seem important to my father, and he keeps protecting the other one every time we send something that way.

’Father, what are you doing?! You should stop this madness before it is too late.’ I implore him over mind link. We are still related, and I would rather see him stand fair trial than die on a battlefield in a battle that was doomed from the very beginning.

’I am making sure someone worthy will take over the throne! Someone who was brought up to believe in the superiority of Dragons. Someone who has not gone soft, and will restore our great species at the top of the chain once again.’ He answers with a sneer.

’But only a blood relative after our kin can take the throne. Why would you try and insert someone, however narrow-minded brought up, when he has no claim?’ I ask, including Blaze in the mind link. He deserves to hear this too, and as long as he keeps quiet, then our father will not know he’s listening in.

’Who said he is not of our kin, son?’ Father says with a snotty attitude. He dodge a claw from Loch, which hit the younger dragon instead. Possibly being in his first real fight, he’s neither very quick to dodge or to anticipate our moves. He grunts in pain, as some of his scales fall off. One of the only things, apart from hellfire and some odd forgotten magic, that can hurt a dragon is another dragon’s talons and teeth.

’What are you trying to say? You’re trying to kill your two sons, just to save another son? Who is he then?’ I ask, anger starting to cloud my judgment. Calor dodge a claw from father, but just barely. He’s also getting out-of-hand angry at this development. We both thought father couldn’t get any more insane then when he kidnapped Amber with Gloria and Gia.

’He is the perfect example that a pure family love can blossom into a young and pure minded child.’ Then I feel like a ton of bricks hit my head as the revelation finally catches up with me. And then I feel sick to my stomach. That young dragon is the spawn of a love affair between sister and brother, and seeing as my father only has one sister. I look down, just in the second where Ignis jumps at aunt Rose’s throat and takes out a big chunk when she lets go.

She falls to the ground, spasming before laying deadly still. Father and my cousin/brother roar in pain, when the bond they have with her breaks into oblivion. I look down again, and this time Ignis is jumping in front of her mother, and in that fraction of not paying attention someone claws me and hits my throat. Calor grunts in pain, and then I feel our left wing get hit. It breaks, and in that moment I know. I’m going to die. We fall from the sky like a rag doll. A very heavy and big rag doll. I can hear Loch growl at the enemy, while Amber screams in my mind, but it’s no use. I’m going to die either way. I feel my conscience slip away, and slowly I close my eyes, embracing the inevitable.

"CHASE! Open your eyes. OPEN THEM DAMMIT YOU DIMWIT." Amber’s voice in my head is ever so loud, and I wonder if she followed me to the death realm? Then I will have to give her an earful! She still has something to accomplish in the Dragon Lands, she’s not finished being brilliant.

"Come on, bro. Open your eyes. We can all see you are still very much alive and annoying. You are scaring the girls." Blaze says. This time I feel utterly confused. I open my eyes, but the light is too bright. I hiss and close them again.

"Try again, babe." Amber says softly, and when I open them again the light has been dimmed. I look around, and what I see makes me feel even more confused than when I thought I was dead. That’s clearly not the case, so what happened? ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

"What happened?" I rasp, my voice gruff and dry. Amber reached for a glass, and poured me some water. Blaze smiles, leans down and kisses Amber on the cheek.

"You fill him in, little moon. I’ll look after the little ones so they don’t over exert themselves. Again." He chuckles, and squeezes my hand. "Good to have you back, brother. We were getting worried there." Amber nods, while helping me to drink. frёewebηovel.cѳm

I look around again, and this time I see we’re in the dining hall, but it has been transformed to a lazaret for the wounded. On my right Abigail is sleeping, while Maze is watching over her. I’m surprised her mate is not here. And on my left Tristan is talking quietly with Glaciel and touching her stomach ever so tenderly. I wonder if we’ll have little feet running through the castle soon. A few beds down are Ezra and Marida laying together and talking as well. Ezra has a patch over his right eye, while Merida has a lot of wounds and bruises on her arms and legs. It almost looks like tentacles have had their tight grip on her.

"So, my beautiful mate. What happened, and how long have I been out?"

"What is the last thing you remember?" She asks, putting the glass back on the small table.

"I was falling from the sky, or rather Calor was, and I heard you screaming my name in a mind link. But then everything went blank." She nods.

"I’ll tell you everything, but we need the others to be awake as well." She looks to her mother. "You are not the only one who missed the last part of the battle."
