Chapter 63: Grazing Death’s Scythe

Maia could only fully extend her whole arm to keep the wolf away from her face. freeωebnovēl.c૦m

"Ahh!"

Nevertheless, the wolf had a lot of strength behind its body. She was thrown to the ground, and the wolf raised its paw to swipe at her defenseless body. She was like the little red riding hood against the wolf.

Misho quickly glanced at her and saw her dire situation. He wanted to come and help, but he was tied to the wolf in front of him.

"Maia!"

"Noo!"

Maia felt horror fill her whole body. She only knew one thing and did it in desperation.

"Fireball!"

Maia threw the fireball at the wolf.

Just like a divine call, a feminine voice shouted, "Chain of Thorns!"

In the blink of an eye, a vine covered with thorns wrapped around the whole wolf. It hindered its movement and delayed its swipe.

*FWOOSH*

Maia’s fireball finally hit the wolf at this exact moment. The Fireball was like a molotov cocktail. It splashed on contact and spread through the wolf’s body.

*AWOO!*

The wolf panicked and stomped down on Maia’s body. It then jumped backward and rolled around on the ground.

"Ough!"

Maia rolled to the side and clutched her chest. Even though the wolf couldn’t swipe its paws at her, she was still in deep pain. The force and weight of the wolf combined together were like a sledgehammer hitting her organs.

Misho was in shambles after seeing Maia almost die. The wolf in front of him seemed to be in a frenzy. After failing to pounce on him, it stood up and swiped its paws at him.

Misho could only take it passively. He used his spear to defend himself again.

"Agh!"

Because of the way the wolf swiped its paws, it almost took Misho’s spear from him. It almost seemed like the wolf intended to grab it.

Misho’s already hurting fingers started hurting more.

"Chain of Thorns!"

That same feminine voice sounded once more.

The wolf in front of Misho was instantly wrapped around with thorny vines.

Misho jumped back and was finally able to regain his footing. He took a deep breath and dashed back to the wolf. He raised his spear forward to pierce it.

The wolf saw his attack and forced itself against the thorns, resulting in them piercing its flesh. The wolf was then able to dash to Misho’s right.

"AHHHH!!"

Misho poured all of his power and changed his pierce to a swing. He swung to the right and stabbed it at the wolf’s chest.

*TCHRUK*

The spear tip slid into the wolf’s flesh. The wolf was unwilling to die as it glared at Misho.

"HAH!"

Misho pulled the spear tip from its body and turned to immediately attack the last remaining wolf. That wolf was rolling and rolling on the ground. It was trying its best to put out the fire.

Unfortunately for it, the fire on its fur was made of magic. Unless Maia died, it would continue. It was a smart wolf, but it still wasn’t able to figure that out.

*THRUST*

Misho stabbed into the wolf’s chest. He then pulled his spear out immediately and stabbed again. He repeated this five more times until he was satisfied.

"Misho..."

Maia was heartened seeing him take revenge for her, and she smiled at him.

"Maia!"

Misho threw his spear to the side and sat in front of Maia. He grabbed her shoulders and made her face him.

"Are you going to die!?" Misho asked in deep worry.

He didn’t want to lose her so quickly. She was his best partner in this game. The two of them would be left behind if they weren’t able to catch up to the other players.

"No... But I feel like I’m going to die..." Maia weakly replied.

"What is that supposed to mean!?" Misho asked loudly.

"It hurts... I want to sleep, Misho..."

"Maia!"

Misho felt his heart sink. He could perfectly understand why she didn’t manage to defend herself against the wolf’s attack. Just like him, she had no battle experience.

The only reason he was able to perfectly put the spear in between the wolf’s mouth was that he was filled with confidence because he truly thought these wolves were weaker than them.

As for Maia, she must not have realized that yet. In battle, confidence was everything because it would serve as your morale. It would all be easy for her, too, once she realized it.

*Step Step*

Misho turned his head to his right and saw WristRose walking to him. She smiled at him and kneeled beside Maia. Misho let her get closer, and she held Maia’s wrist.

"Hmmm... She’s still alive. I can feel her vitality coursing through her body. After some rest, she should be fine," WristRose said.

Misho was instantly relieved after hearing her words. He fell to the ground and laid on his back.

"F*ck this game..." Misho muttered.

MadPolygon and TonkotsuRamen slowly approached them.

"How’s the fight at the front?" Mad asked WristRose.

"The Alpha Male is about to die. I ran back here because the Alpha Female is still nowhere to be found," she explained.

"Ah... So there is still an Essence Sea-stage monster around us."

MadPolygon became on edge once again. It would only take one swipe from an Essence Sea-stage monster’s paws, and he would be sent to the other side of the world.

"We’re not sure. It should’ve come out by now when the Alpha Male howled," WristRose replied.

As the two were speaking to each other, Misho rubbed Maia’s forehead. Knowing that she was fine reassured him. His worries were now gone, and the only thing he wanted was for her to quickly recover.

*AWOO–*

A howl erupted from the front before it was quickly interrupted.

"It should be dead now," WristRose said.

That was the Alpha Male’s last cry. Jabber and the NPCs managed to take it down fairly quickly.

"Thank you for helping us," Misho said.

"Hehehe. No need. It would’ve been a disaster if the two of you didn’t step in. MadPolygon and TonkotsuRamen would’ve died, and a great deal of the caravan would’ve been destroyed," WristRose humbly replied.
