Chapter 23: Chapter 23 - For the past and the future

Vincent got into the car, the night had come. Although his previous fire managed to light up the sky, causing chaos on the ground, the light wasn’t permanent.

After the sky view, they descended to the ground and talked about the progress. Hera managed to control her power after that but she said she still needed a little training to achieve her prime.

And it seemed like his demonstration inspired her. She was fired up.

Hera kissed him on the cheek and said goodbye.

Vincent smiled and left, feeling the excitement running through him. He knew he just destroyed the wall between him and Hera.

He whistled in a good mood.

Hera watched as the car turned around the corner and disappeared from her view. She nodded and stared at the hand which was holding Vincent’s hand earlier when she lost control from the power.

It was huge and soft. At the same time, it gave her a warm sensation. She didn’t want to admit it but her love life wasn’t the best.

She tried to settle down when her daughter reached 5 years old but every man she came across always wanted one thing.

Her body.

Of course, not all of them were the same rotten men. But even against the good men she knew that she couldn’t reveal her past to them.

He still couldn’t believe herself for allowing Vincent to see her costume that day. Maybe because she wanted him to see her secret. Because she was alone and troubling on her own.

She was selfish but Vincent didn’t see it that way.

In fact, he showed her how much he cared about her.

Her ability was strongly related to emotions. Every emotion she was feeling could be used as fuel for her flame. The same must be true for Vincent as well after all, he said his ability was copied.

And she knew the flame was very similar to her own.

Imagine her surprise when she saw him light up the sky with his determination to carry her burden with him. She was relieved to know that she wasn’t alone in this world.

Ever since her daughter left for the University, she felt like she was in a nightmare. Her daughter was her only support in life.

But still, even with all the things Vincent had done to lift up her spirit, she hadn’t fully told him about her past. More specifically, the incident which made her this way.

The curses she had to carry and the laughter she had to listen to every nightmares.

She didn’t want to tell him yet. Vincent had a life on his own and he didn’t need to worry about that right now. With his ability, he could make a fine hero.

That was why she would end the past that was still roaming the world.

She turned away from the street into the house with determination. She clenched into a fist and it caught on flame. She needed to train. Train so that she didn’t have to carry the past anymore and so that....maybe...just maybe...she could be with Vincent.

Hot.

Cold.

Hot.

Cold.

Damn, can you decide?

Shut up, I am still feeling the taste.

Crawling up from the mountain of dead bodies, one man started to laugh. The rotten flesh still hanging on his face, the nasty liquid dripping down from his hair. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

He had been sleeping on the pile of corpses and forgot about it. So much so that the rotting smell of the flesh became unbearable to nature and started pouring down rain.

The man laughed at it and flickered his hand. Nothing happened.

I am still cold.

No, dumbass. It is hot.

Debating about the conflict of the temperature, the man looked around, ignoring the nasty smell he emitted.

He was the wielder of chaos and lover of wonder. He moved his hand, started snapping till his finger bled.

Suddenly the shadow appeared beside him and bowed to him like a servant. The man moved his arms, grabbing the neck of the servant who just appeared.

He broke the neck in half with incredible strength and lifted him up.

Yummy. Food.

He bit down and chewed the skin from the face. He didn’t like to eat the meat. He was a vegan.

After skinning the servant’s head he threw it away to the ground. A shapeless mass of muscle tissues.

See that. Feel that.

Order. Order.

How dare.

Order.

The man bent down and picked up the letter dropped from the servant.

It didn’t say anything.

Dumbass, read.

Ah, it said something. Just a location. A city named City?

It is City C.

Ah, you are right. It is City C.

The man chewed the paper and smiled, jumping up and down in joy. Finally, he got an order from the...

Not yet.... It is still a mystery....

Fuxk off.

Nathan’s office.

Nathan read the report given by his friend. It showed Vincent’s past with the interviews of everyone he knew about.

Surprisingly, he indeed existed here. But it is strange. It is strange that he just suddenly appeared out in the street and walked up to Hera.

The coincidence can’t be ignored. Such coincidence was the downfall of his plan from the past. He was only a human and had to face the superpowered individual with wit.

It wasn’t easy and no one told him that either.

"At least, he is a good seed but still, I am having a feeling that he is hiding something from me." Nathan said lazily throwing the paper to the table. freewebnovёl.ƈom

Katherine shrugged from the side. "How is his first case?"

"Good. No... it was great. He got lucky or should I say unlucky. Because he ran into a Homicide but he managed to deduce well and got the results."

"Then, shut up about your feelings. Everyone has a secret or two up their sleeves." Katherine said from the chair, writing the report of Nathan.

She sorted all the clues he picked up from the closed cases and stored them in the archives.

"Oh. Are you telling me because you feel attached to him? Guilty about lying?"

"Yes. But I understand why I have to lie." Katherine answered honestly.

Nathan sighed and went back to the chair, tapping at the table.

"It is annoying." Katherine suddenly voiced.

"Hiding the secret right?" Nathan sighed.

"No. The tapping. It is annoying."

"Geez, sorry." Nathan sighed again, his hair was now turning white and he was still in his thirties.

"But I don’t sense any malicious intent from him. He is a good boy. I feel bad for lying to him."

"You are not the one that is lying." Katherine rolled her eyes.

"Indeed, I am guilt free. But you can stop lying to him if you want. It is your choice."

"I know. I am not just taking your order blindly."

Nathan closed his eyes and recalled every scene he had with Vincent. Each passing moment.

His mind split into two. Then four. Then eight. Simultaneously, he worked to analyze every scene, every detail.

After completing them a thousand times, his mind returned to normal and he felt a sudden urge for sugar.

"He is clean. But he is hiding something. Something bigger than himself. And he is also feeling depressed. He is trying to convince himself that he is normal but it is eating him up. So, it is possible that he will try to channel the negative feelings he was feeling to something sexual. Perhaps with multiple women in his state."

"Why? Multiple women?" Katherine suddenly asked.

Nathan smiled. "Because he didn’t like confronting his past. But I might be wrong. It is all a deduction."

His voice lingered in Katherine’s head but she took everything he said with 100 percent certainty. Okay, not 100 percent but close.

Nathan was the best detective in the world and he had to be when he was facing the people with a crazy superpower.
