Chapter 24: Chapter 24 - Closing the First Chapter

Vincent parked his car in the remote parking lot and walked toward Nathan’s building. He walked up to the second floor and opened the door and announced.

"I am here."

He laughed and opened the door beside him. He saw Katherine typing on the computer with her thick glasses. She didn’t look up as her eyes were glued to the screen.

He coughed as he leaned on the door frame, casting down shadow.

"Annoying. Go away."

"Ouch." Vincent performed his act, clenching his hand into his heart and cried out. The dramatic acting of his caused Katherine’s eyes to roll out with even more annoyance.

"Ouch. It is like a sharp dagger pushing deep into my skin. It hurts, Kat. It hurt."

Katherine walked up from her seat and slowly walked toward Vincent.

She then buried her hand deep into his stomach, pinched and twisted it with full force.

"Ouch. Ouch." Vincent yelled out in pain, this time not acting at all.

She let go after that and patted his shoulder, smiling like an evil witch. Vincent flinched.

"Scary." He muttered. "Aren’t you gonna praise me for doing a great job?"

"Maybe. Nathan said it is not that impressive." Katherine said, tilting her head to the side, exposing her pale neck.

"You guys already got the new? That fast? Crazy." Vincent said, unable to contain his surprise.

He realized that his acting skill was quite good so he was pushing it.

"Anyway, good job." Katherine said softly and turned around, walking back to her seat.

Vincent looked at the back of her head and smiled faintly.

A tough egg to crack. He sighed and closed the door, walking toward Nathan’s door.

He knocked a few times and swung it open.

"Someone is having a good day. You haven’t even heard about my permission yet." Nathan said, smoking a pipe.

Vincent closed the door behind and stepped forward. He shrugged. "I heard you lighting up the fire so I figured you are busy with the pipe. Don’t want to waste the air , right?"

Nathan puffed out the ring of smoke and nodded. "Correct, Vinc. And I heard a great deal of your work. Take a seat."

Vincent sat down on the chair.

Nathan offered him the pipe but he declined it by shaking his head.

"I don’t smoke."

"Figure. You must be in the fitness niche to be in this shape. But soon, you will need this lovely boy by your side." Nathan sighed. "Do you know why?"

"I can see it." Vincent nodded. His eyes went serious, hinting out the cold gaze.

The world of detectives was cruel. What he experienced today was just the tip of the iceberg.

The chance of encountering a real crazy psychopath was low but not zero. One day, he would lay a sight on the most cruel thing a human can do to another one.

And he still had to face the chaos with his own power.

What was chaos?

For now, that had to be buried under the priority list. He needed information about the heroes.

"Sir." Vincent called.

Nathan looked at him, still not pulling out the pipe from his mouth. He was soaked in drugs. A helpful drug.

It helped him calm his crazy working mind.

"Go on."

"I am aiming for driving into the work of heroes." Vincent stated plainly. He knew that Nathan was a smart man.

Sooner or later, the middle aged detective would find out about his secret. He was certain of that. So, it was better to slowly lay out his secret.

First was his goal.

"Why?" Nathan asked, blowing out a grey smoke, which lingered around him.

Vincent waved the hand in front of his face. "Just because. Is this answer enough to fill your curiosity?"

"No." Nathan shook his head. "Nowhere near enough. I achieved this level of success by climbing the ladder slowly. You are a smart kid, I praise you for that. But being smart isn’t the only requirement for my job. You needed experience."

What Nathan said was true? Vincent didn’t deny it.

"Not just experience with crime solving. You also needed the foundation of having to work with heroes. To understand them. What do they think? All that factor led to our survival. We don’t have power, just wit."

"When do you think I will reach that goal of mine?" Vincent asked.

Nathan took out the pipe from his mouth and smiled. "Not when? You should ask what you need to do?"

"Allow me to eat the words back in my mouth." Vincent smiled, matching his senior detective.

"I allow it."

"What do I need to do to achieve my goal?"

Nathan clapped his hand. "Good. I will tell you. First, you need to have many corporations with heroes. Help them. Second, you need the connection within the Homicide Division. Learn their ways. Learn the art of using everything."

Vincent nodded.

"After that, I will give you the path. Use that path. Understand?"

"Yes, sir."

"Good. Good. Go rest. You have to go to work tomorrow." Nathan waved his hand.

Vincent stood up and bowed respectfully at the senior detective. He felt truly thankful for that.

"Before I leave, do you have any idea how I can get into helping heroes?"

"It is easy. Go to the Help Center for the government office. You will see a board. Some heroes will place their jobs on the wall."

"Kind of the adventure’s guild mission board." Vincent muttered.

"Bingo! I am surprised you know about it. It is from an old age fantasy. Now, people just talked about heroes. It is getting boring."

Vincent laughed and nodded. Guess, the webnovel here wasn’t as popular as the earth.

Vincent turned around and left the office, going up to the third floor. He went to his room and started to shower.

Before he cleansed his mind, he thought about Dawnstar and her gold hair. Her green eyes draw him in.

And his mind drifted back to the Hera and the passionate kiss they shared. He touched his lips and smiled.

He channeled the energy from his heart into the power he acquired. Water evaporated around him, turning into a mist.

The last person was Katherine. She was... quite cute. Teasing her was the fun part.

Oh, slow down, Vincent. He told himself. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

Looking at the perfect body in the mirror, he smacked his cheek, turning red.

"I am really the worst."
