Chapter 12: Chapter 12 - Newbie Detective
City C ( Bonei- unofficial name given by the people due to a certain accident in the past.)
"Please, boss." Detective Jason of the Robbery Homicide Division said, as if he’d just heard the world’s unfunniest joke. freёwebnoѵel.com
Jason was standing in front of the captain Hugle’s desk, staring at the piece of paper the captain had just handed him.
"You are dumping the suicide case on me again, captain?" Jason asked, still dumbfounded by it. He had been handling the suicide cases many times in this month.
Captain Hugle was in his mid-fifties, but looked at least ten years younger. The man was a menacing figure, respected by everyone in the force. He looked at his detective and shrugged.
"What are you complaining about, Jason?" Captain asked. "I thought you liked an easy case?"
He then nodded at the piece of paper in Jason’s hand and said as if it was fact. "They don’t come easier than that. The woman sliced her wrist and bled to death in her bed. It’s an open and shut case."
The law given by the world government stated that every suicide must treated as homicide, therefore homicide detective must attend to the scene first and investigated it to rule out the foul play.
Once that was done, as far as the detective concerned, the case was closed and they didn’t need to be involved anymore.
It would be the work of twenty-four or forty-eight hours.
"Yeah, I love open and close case but suicides are one hell of paperwork. And I need to work quickly for the family. You know, they need to file to the police ASAP." Jason said and pointed toward the door, beyond the door was the detective floor.
"I got 13 open homicide cases sitting at my desk. I can’t handle the suicide right now? I barely have the time to piss and you want me to go to the scene outside and spend my time writing the report? Because some rich bitch roped herself."
"Slice her wrist but yes, someone got to do it."
"Give it to that damn, Pete." Jason rolled his eyes. "He loves paperwork. I saw him fapping to it."
"Language, detective." Captain Hugle shook his head. "Pete broke his arm last week, remember? Sorry, buddy, you are it. I’ve got no one else."
A knock came to the captain’s door.
The door was pushed by a young man in early twenties, wearing a dark suit and a grey coat that looked good on him. He was about six feet tall, broad shoulder with a very powerful looking physique.
His youthful face had a certain kindness to it that suggested trustworthiness and determination. His eyes possessed a penetrating quality easily associated with self-confidence, but not the cocky kind.
"And who the hell might you be?" Captain asked, narrowing his eyes.
The young man stepped inside, closed the door behind him, and approached the captain’s desk. "My name is Vincent Rees, sir, I’m the junior detective from Nathan."
He handed over his card and let the captain scan it.
"Wrong floor, kid." Jason said. "This is a Homicide where the big boys lived. You’re probably looking for Commercial Crimes or Support. Both of those are two floors below."
Vincent nodded. "I know, thank you but I am on the right floor and right division."
"You are joking right? You don’t even look old enough to shave." Jason chuckled.
Vincent wasn’t surprised by Jason’s skepticism. Nathan told him about this.
On average it took an officer at least six years of street crime before he was allowed to put out the position of detective.
If successful, it would then take a detective another four to five years, together with an impressive track record and a captain’s recommendation, before he was considered at the Homicide Division’s elite.
This division was considered the top ladder when it came to the top detective in the city. Jason had never heard of anyone younger than thirty-something reaching that position.
Captain Hugle looked at Vincent and checked again on the computer. He then gave back the card to Vincent.
"Is this for real, Captain?" Jason pointed at Vincent. "This baby face, pretty boy here is joining our division?"
"He is from Nathan. You heard about that man." The captain agreed.
Vincent turned and faced Jason. "Vincent Reed." He said, extending his hand. "It is a pleasure to meet you, detective.....?
Jason ignored the newbie’s hand. "Yeah. Yeah." He then looked at the Captain and sighed. "Are we recruiting from kindergarten now, Captain? Is the department that desperate...."
He paused, looking down at the paperwork in his hand. "Problem solved." He shrugged and turned back to Vincent.
"I am Detective Jason but you can call me Sir." He said, handing the paperwork to Vincent. "Welcome to the Homicide, pretty boy. Enjoy your first case because it will only get worse."
He headed to the door and pushed. "And do me a favor, don’t add Nathan in your introduction. You sound like a prick caz of that."
Vincent looked down the paperwork and waved at the Captain. "Should I take this?"
"Yes. But you need to work quickly. It is a suicide case."
"Ah." Vincent nodded and was about to turn when the Captain called him.
"Wait, kiddo. Since you are from Nathan, you got a protection package." Captain said.
"Yes, I remember him talking about it." Vincent nodded. Nathan created many enemies during his times as a detective and as the best in the government, he got the protection.
So it was natural that Vincent also got one.
"I will deploy you with a C-Rank hero." Captain said, giving a new paper to him.
Vincent read and smiled. The paper allowed him to take the car from the office and the hero.
"I will get going, Sir." Vincent said and left.

Vincent walked down the office building and stopped on the way to the resources management. He showed his card and the paper from the captain.
"Follow me, sir." The young officer said and guided him to the parking lot.
"Do you want a flying car or a normal one?" He asked.
"Normal." Vincent said, since he didn’t know how to drive one. He learned from the book but practice was a necessary process.
"Also, I don’t want anything fancy in the car."
The officer looked at him in confusion and nodded with a smile. "Ah, your role model is detective Nathan right? I heard that the detective hates the new technology. Don’t worry, I got one for you."
After getting the car, Vincent entered inside and started the engine.
"Here is the communication with your hero, Sir?" The officer said, giving him the card.
Vincent grabbed and saluted the officer. "Have a nice day."
He drove off with moderate speed. He wasn’t a crazy person like Hera or Nathan who drove very slowly.
Vincent stared at the card he got.
C-Rank Heroine. freēwēbηovel.c૦m
Dawnstar.
And beneath the rank and name was her number. He immediately dialed at her.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
She picked up the phone and Vincent immediately introduced himself.
"Hi, I am Vincent Reed from the Homicide Division. I got protection from you. So, where should we meet? I am currently in the car."
Vincent heard a groan and curses. Thankfully, it wasn’t aiming at him but herself. It seemed like the Hero was still sleeping when he called.
Suddenly, she spoke in a hurry.
"Ahh...ahh.. I remember. I remember. Curse me. Curse me."
"I would rather not." Vincent replied.
"Ah, are you still listening? Just end me."
Vincent sighed. "Take a hold of yourself, Hero. I need your protection. Where should I come? And when? I prefer it now but I can make time for you for about 30 minutes."
"Got it. Got it." He heard the inhale and someone slapping their own face.
Vincent squinted his eyes in cringe. "Maple District. In the district park, I have pale blonde hair and green eyes. You can find me right?"
"Sure." Vincent answered and stopped the car in the traffic. He closed his eyes and recalled the map of the city. It would take him about 10 minutes to reach the Maple District Park.
He turned left when the light turned green and stopped at the cafe.
Due to his first superpower, he was always filled with energy. That was another reason he could spend that much time on studying and training his gun.
So the coffee wasn’t for him but for the hero who will protect him. He still wanted her to wake her mind.
"What do you want?" A cute barista asked, her eyes were dead.
"Large. Something that will shock the mind."
"Sure. Name?"
"Dawnstar."
The barista paused and recalled the hero’s name. "Creepy."
"It is not like that." Vincent denied immediately and sighed.
"Guess, I am not escaping Katherine’s curse."
