Chapter 13: Chapter 13 - Dawnstar
Vincent stopped the car and stepped out, taking the coffee with him. As soon as he existed, he gathered attention from those around him.
And he knew exactly what kind of attention was. No, it wasn’t because he was handsome or anything like that. The attention was brought by his car.
By this world standard, it was old.
"Mommy. Look look. He got that car from the old TV grandma showed."
Vincent ignored the insult from the child and let out a sigh. He didn’t even pass an hour into his job.
He looked down at his watch and noted that he arrived at 30 minutes sharp, punctual as always. Unlike a certain hero he was searching for, he respected his time.
While he was looking, he noticed a blonde sitting in the park on the swing. She tirelessly swung around with her head hung low.
For some reason, he expected Dawnstar to wear her hero costume. But maybe he was wrong because she wore civilian clothes.
She had baggy pants and a long T-shirt covered by a jean jacket. Her pale blonde hair flowing behind her, reaching to the waist.
"Dawnstar?" He called out uncertainly.
The woman’s head straightened like a dancing pole and turned to him. She stood up, fixing her posture immediately.
She wore sunglasses which covered her green hazel eyes.
"Yes. Yes. I am Dawnstar. Want an autograph?" She said, "But sorry, I am currently in a job."
"Yeah, I know. I am Vincent. Remember? From the phone I just called you."
A visible light bulb lit up on her head and she nodded furiously. "Ah. Yes. Yes. Sorry about that, I am still having a headache from last night."
Vincent frowned. "Should I worry?"
"No need. I can perfectly protect you from threats."
Vincent looked up and down and struggled. After a while, he shrugged. It was just a suicide case he was going to investigate.
He handed her the coffee and said, "Here, have some coffee. I have food in the car if you want to have some."
She took the coffee and thanked him. "Thank you, you are so kind."
"Ah...it is just a coffee." Vincent sighed and went to his car.
Dawnstar entered, drinking the coffee and beamed a smile. She was cute. That was the most positive thing he could say about her right now. frёeωebɳovel.com
He backed off the car and entered the main road.
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Yas." She answered with a mouthful of food.
"Aren’t you supposed to wear your costume?"
Dawnstar smiled, staring at him. "Please don’t report to the resources management. They will lower my salary."
"I won’t. I just want to know the reason."
"It is not dry yet." She answered honestly. "I swear, I put the costume in the drier when I was going to bed but the landlord cut off the electricity."
"Ah." Vincent nodded, reconsidering his living condition. He was truly lucky.
"Is that a promise?" She said, turning her face at him. "You won’t tell them about this right?"
Looking closely, she had a heart shaped face with a delicate sculpted nose and lips. She was attractive. Her green eyes carried unusual and captivating sparkles.
"It is a promise."
"Yay, you are awesome." Dawnstar laughed.
Vincent sighed and smiled. Maybe he was affected by her naive charm.
"Anyway, you look young for a detective. The people I protected are usually old and noisy. Always telling me to be serious." Dawnstar complained, sipping at the coffee.
"Finish the drink, we are going to examine the body." Vincent said, stopping his car at the apartment building.
"What?"
"Yeah." Vincent tilted his head.
Dawnstar coughed, choking the cookie he bought earlier. He grabbed the water bottle and threw it to her. She caught it and drank.
"You never told me about it."
"You didn’t ask. What do you think I am?"
"A detective." She answered. freewebnovёl.ƈom
"Bingo." Vincent snapped his finger and slapped at the car. "Hurry. Hurry. I don’t want to mess up the first case."
Dawnstar closed her eyes and chanted a few meditation words and got out. "I am ready."
"You know that you don’t need to stare at the body right?" Vincent said, narrowing his eyes.
"I know obviously. But still, what if I saw. My appetite would drop a lot." She said with a sigh.
Vincent shook his head and entered the apartment building. The guard stopped him but when he showed his identification card, he let him inside.
"First case and yet you already got protection." Dawnstar said in amazement.
"What are you suggesting?"
"You must have a really great potential or have offended some powerful villains." Dawnstar said. "Hehe, my guess is correct right?"
"Buzz, dead wrong." Vincent replied. "Think about it again."
Dawnstar frowned and deeply used her brain. After a while, she was scratching her head and gave up.
"Connection." Vincent just said one word.
"Got it. Your parents must be a powerful figure in the government. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Relying on others, how..." She paused, staring at him with worry on her face.
Vincent turned to her and flashed her a cold smile. "Continue."
"No. Forget about that." She shrugged off with a laugh.
Vincent didn’t correct her for many reasons. One, he had already brought up her mind from the headache and filled her stomach. And by manipulating her mind that he was someone important, she would be more motivated to protect him in case something bad happened.
They both entered the elevator. Vincent tapped at floor 23.
"Is this a murder?" Dawnstar suddenly asked.
"I don’t know yet. The report said suicide but I have to check first." Vincent said. "Can I know your superpower?"
"Better to demonstrate." She said, lifting up her arm. The light coming from the light bulb dimmed as if it was absorbed by something.
Vincent turned his attention back onto her hand and saw a ball of light floating on it. She twisted the ball with her mind and shaped it to the desired things such as figurines, small weapons.
After that, she released the light back to the world.
Dawnstar smiled and turned her face to him. With a proud smile on her face, she said. "Pretty cool right?"
"Indeed. It is very useful. The power to absorb the light and use it as you please. Yes. That is crazy powerful." Vincent said honestly. "But I don’t understand it."
"About what?"
"Why are you still at Rank C with this power? Is there a limit to your power?"
"No. Not that I know of. It is a personal reason."
"Sorry if I appear intruding into your life." Vincent nodded at her.
"Not like that." Dawnstar said and didn’t elaborate.
A condition rang inside his head from his ability Soft Copy.
The condition to copy Dawnstar’s power was 70 percent body touch.
Vincent’s eyes twitched and sighed. Another crazy condition. But the power was useful so he was going to try.
And he got confirmation of how his Soft Copy ability works. The hidden condition. He needed to know the ability function or saw with his own eyes.
