Chapter 63: To The Wall
Two military cars could be seen in the distance. Theodore recognized them, as he had seen many such cars when he had walked to the barracks before. It was only now that Theodore could confirm that the cars were used to take workers to their sections.
"You’re finally back, Geo; we’ve been waiting for you!"
As Theodore and Geoffrey approached one of the military cars, they were greeted by a middle-aged man who seemed to be the leader of these workers. Theodore did not say anything and just observed them silently.
"Sir, this is the person Captain Victor gave us," Geoffrey said excitedly to the middle-aged man.
The middle-aged man patted Theodore’s shoulder lightly, smiling friendly. "You can call me Walter. I am the appointed leader of the labour group here. I hope you can feel at home working with us," Walter said kindly.
"Given that I’m new here, I don’t know what to do. I hope you can help me." Theodore politely extended his hand to Walter.
Walter warmly welcomed the handshake and led Geoffrey and Theodore to the other workers. After getting acquainted with the others, they entered the car and went to the west gate.
"Oh yeah, how are things at the west gate?" Theodore turned to Walter to ask that question.
"Actually, the situation there is quite problematic. There are a lot of zombies around the wall, and yesterday, we just lost 3 people because of this zombie problem, so we need people from the military to take care of the zombies." Walter sighed after explaining the situation of their workplace.
"Are things like that elsewhere?" Theodore was not surprised that they were attacked by zombies around the wall.
"It’s not much different. It’s just that the situation around the west gate is worse than elsewhere," Walter replied grimly.
"Apparently so. Take it easy. I’ll protect you as much as possible," Theodore replied, trying to calm the other workers who looked silent.
Geoffrey opened his voice cheerfully in that awkward moment, contrasting the gloomy atmosphere around them.
"I’m sure you can do a good job!" Geoffrey patted Theodore’s shoulder happily.
"You can do it. Then, what about you? Are you having trouble with the work?" Theodore asked while grinning at Geoffrey.
Geoffrey didn’t answer Theodore’s question; he laughed softly and then looked away.
Seeing Geoffrey’s strange reaction, Theodore was secretly suspicious of the situation in this group. Somehow, he smelled something fishy here. But for now, he just kept quiet and didn’t say anything.
"You seem to be close to Geoffrey?" Walter seemed curious about their interaction, and they seemed very close.
"Yes, I consider him like my own brother." If there was indeed something suspicious here, then Theodore must have indirectly told them that he was close to Geoffrey.
Given that Geoffrey was still very young, it crossed Theodore’s mind that it would be easy for these workers to use Geoffrey to their advantage.
In addition, the other workers began to avoid Theodore’s gaze, and Walter looked awkward after hearing Theodore’s answer to his question. Just as Theodore wanted to ask about it, he felt that the car they were travelling in began to stop.
"Come on, guys. We need to get to work!" Walter stood up, walked out of the military car, and urged the others to get off and get to work.
The other workers quickly followed Walter’s lead. Theodore also got off, but he quickly stopped Geoffrey. He needed to know that the boy was okay.
"Hey, are you okay?" Theodore whispered slightly to Geoffrey. frёewebηovel.cѳm
Geoffrey smiled and said, "You don’t have to worry, brother Theo. I’m fine."
But Geoffrey didn’t stop there; unlike usual, he spoke seriously this time to Theodore.
"You should be careful of them. My current state isn’t too bad, but they might attack you if they feel threatened by your presence." After speaking like that, Geoffrey smiled again and waltzed away from Walter and the others.
Honestly, Theodore was a little shaken by Geoffrey’s words. He felt that the little boy had changed quite a lot, even though he had only left him three days, but the difference was already this big.
"It seems that what happened here is not that simple." In his heart, Theodore was increasingly suspicious of the people’s movements here.
Theodore couldn’t make them realize he suspected them, so he acted like he didn’t know anything and walked after them, who had arrived around the half-awakened wall.
Only after observing the surroundings did Theodore realize that the other military vehicles that had set out with them carried people with powers helpful in building the wall around the base.
Most of these awakened people had the power of earth, soil, metal, and iron. They used the basic materials of their powers and then turned them into materials to construct the wall.
The people who didn’t have powers were assigned to distribute the materials needed by those who did. Theodore just realized that Victor also sent one person with power to this team.
For now, Theodore still couldn’t decide whether that person could help him and become his ally or if he belonged to these suspicious people.
Theodore’s current task was to protect these people from the zombie attacks around the wall. Theodore took out his sword and walked beside the people with powers who began to climb the wall and start their work again.
Just as Theodore wanted to climb the wall to keep them safe, he felt someone grab his shoulder from behind. Theodore instantly looked back with his sharp gaze.
Theodore found out that the person was one of the power users Victor had sent to this place with him.
"What are you doing?" Theodore had no intention of being kind to this person.
"Your place is down here. I’ll take care of the power users." The long-haired youth grinned at Theodore. It was apparent he underestimated Theodore’s strength.
"Damn, you don’t need to hold me like this, if only for something like that!" Theodore snapped back and immediately turned around to leave the spot for that damn young man.
From a distance, Theodore also saw the workers, led by Walter, carrying iron rods and pushing several carts that appeared to be filled with clay. Theodore thought the people working below the wall would be safer than those above the wall.
However, Theodore’s thinking is wrong because the zombies can attack from the side of the wall that has not been built and start attacking the workers.
