Chapter 62: Murder Case?
"Wouldn’t it be very suspicious if we suddenly noticed people in the base?" Theodore accepted that Victor’s idea was good, but he realized that their movements would be very noticeable if it were like that.
"So from now on, you will work like the others. If you get any information about the criminals in the base, you can act immediately as long as it’s not too obvious." Victor grinned as he explained his plan again.
The people in the room looked quite surprised when they heard Victor’s words. They thought that they didn’t need to do any other work when joining the military forces to carry out missions outside the base.
"Why is that, Captain? Aren’t the jobs in the base already allocated to the people who live there?" One of the people who woke up did not look too happy with Victor’s decision.
"We’re not used to base jobs either!"
"Wouldn’t it be better for you to create a supervisory team to monitor those problematic people?"
One by one, the voices disagreeing with Victor’s decision were heard; they were too focused on talking nonsense to notice Victor’s changes, who was now clenching his fist on the table. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
Then, a strong pounding on the table made everyone talking in the room immediately fall silent and turn to the person who had pounded the table.
They paled when they saw who it was and realized their previous words had angered Victor. Even a fool would notice the murderous aura emanating from Victor’s body this time.
"I will remove you from this team if you don’t do it," Victor said, with bulging eyes and a scary face.
No one wanted to argue with Victor’s words this time; they inevitably did what he said, even though they didn’t like the arrangement. Meanwhile, Theodore himself did not think about Victor’s arrangement.
Given that Theodore was quite curious about the situation inside the base, he didn’t mind if he had to work inside it. After all, that way, Theodore could gather his information.
Besides that, his levelling process in the hospital at that time was enough for him at the moment, so if, for the time being, he didn’t go out to kill zombies, it was okay. Besides, there was one thing that made Theodore curious about the murder case that happened in this base.
In his past life, Theodore remembered a rumour in City A base that it was almost destroyed because zombies suddenly entered. Theodore did not know if this murder case was related to the zombies surrounding the base.
Therefore, Theodore was eager to learn about this, especially considering that anything can change nowadays. The future events where City A’s prosperous base could be destroyed today if they could not solve the problems that occurred.
Theodore had painstakingly moved to City A, so he did not want his struggle to move here to be in vain and make him re-experience the destruction of the base he lived in like in his previous life.
"Then, how will you divide our work?" Theodore finally spoke up again and asked Victor this critical question.
Victor, who seemed to have gotten lazy watching them, just waved his hand at Roderick. Then Roderick stood up from his position and distributed sheets of paper to everyone in the room.
Since Theodore was right next to Roderick, he was the first to receive the leaflet. Theodore saw that the paper contained their names and where they would be placed.
Theodore’s brow furrowed slightly when he saw that he had been placed as a supervisor at the wall construction site near the west gate of the base. If this was the case, he would also have to help with the wall construction.
"Will we be paid, captain?" Theodore asked again, this time clearly directed his question towards Victor.
"Yes, you will be paid like everyone else. The canteen will be open twice a day, and you can use that facility to get food," Victor finally explained. Inevitably, he had to explain this to all of them.
After hearing Victor’s explanation, at least everyone was willing to do the job again because they would still be paid for their work. One by one, they began to leave the room.
Theodore didn’t know where to find the person who would take him to the west gate, so he approached Roderick to ask the man.
"Has the group of workers at the west gate left already?" Theodore awkwardly asked Roderick, who looked like he would follow Victor.
"They haven’t left yet because they’re waiting for you. The captain has contacted each sector’s coordinators to wait for you, and I heard they will send people to pick you up here." Roderick explained the situation to Theodore.
For a moment, Theodore was quite surprised by Roderick’s explanation; from what he knew, Victor did not care about others. But it seemed that the information he had gleaned from his past life was incorrect.
"That’s it, thank you!" Theodore immediately waltzed out of the room to find the person who would pick him up.
Theodore was curious about who would pick him up, but no matter what it looked like, he wouldn’t know who picked him up because he was a newcomer to this City and only knew Geoffrey and Roxanne.
But Theodore’s guess was wrong when he heard a familiar voice calling his name from a distance, and when he looked up, he saw a familiar person.
"Brother Theo! I’m coming to get you!" Geoffrey ran up to Theodore with a big smile.
"You work at the west gate?" Theodore couldn’t believe this coincidence.
Moreover, Theodore was even more surprised when a teenage boy like Geoffrey was hired to construct the wall, which was very dangerous because there were many zombies around.
Theodore was not too surprised that he was placed there because he would meet many zombies around the wall construction site. When Theodore returned from outside the base, he could see that many zombies were growling around the wall and the gate of their base.
"Yes! We’d better get moving now; the others are already preparing to leave!" Geoffrey invited Theodore to follow him.
While walking after Geoffrey, Theodore did not keep quiet as he continued to question the boy with his questions.
"Why are you working near the wall? Aren’t there a lot of zombies?" Theodore still couldn’t digest this information in his head.
"How can I choose a job? It’s good that they accepted me; you might not know, but many people in the base don’t get jobs." At the end of his sentence, Geoffrey lowered his voice and glanced around.
Theodore also fell silent when he heard Geoffrey’s explanation, but it turned out that the situation inside this base was not as beautiful as he had seen.
