Chapter 58: Unity
Anastasia retreated to her guest room, seeking a moment of privacy after the harrowing encounter with Liam in the Luna pack’s destroyed lands.
Her hands trembled faintly as she pulled out her phone and dialed her mother’s number Elizabeth back home.
"Anastasia?" Her mother’s concerned voice filtered through almost immediately. "Is everything alright, dear?"
"Hello, mom," Anastasia replied, forcing her tone to remain even. "I’m fine. I think everything went well with this pack."
Elizabeth asked softly. "How are you feeling? Are you getting enough rest? These stressful terrors that you keep having can’t be easy."
Anastasia’s eyes drifted to the window, watching Alex having fun with young Willow in a nearby field.
Willow is doing a great job at pulling Alex out of his shell.
Having someone the same age as him play with him was a good idea to keep him busy.
A faint smile tugged at her lips. "I’m alright. The nightmares have lessened for now."
Of course, they will lessen because Liam is here.
"And what about Alex?" Elizabeth pressed. "Is he adjusting well to the Luna pack’s lands?"
"He’s doing remarkably well, all things considered. The head alpha has a little sister named Williow, she is making Alex enjoy this place." Anastasia admitted, some of the tension easing from her shoulders as she observed her brother’s carefree joy. "The change of scenery seems to agree with him."
A pause, then, "That’s a relief to hear. But when will you be returning home? What is the plan? Did you agree on some plan?"
Sighing, Anastasia leaned against the wall, the reality of her duty weighing heavily once more. "I will need to remain here a while longer, to ensure our warriors fully adapt to operating in tandem with the Luna wolves. You know how some alphas can be stubborn, I want to be here when they arrive just to make sure nobody gets into trouble with the Luna pack."
"Very well." There was an undercurrent of hesitation in Elizabeth’s tone. "And I suppose I should prepare for the arrival of Xavier’s own forces soon?"
"Yes," Anastasia confirmed, thinking of Xavier’s offer to send some of his most skilled fighters to the Midnight pack. "A contingent from his pack will be joining ours in the coming days. Please see that they are made welcome, Mother. We will require absolute unity to withstand these attacks. Apparently, this pack wants to take over both of our packs."
Her mother’s response was grim but resolute. "Of course, I will ensure it is handled accordingly. You focus on developing strong ties with Xavier and his pack members - we are all counting on this alliance. We need each other."
"I will." Anastasia’s grip tightened on the phone as her eyes drifted back to the serene scene outside. "Stay safe, Mother. I will be in touch soon."
She ended the call, her jaw set in determination.
No matter the complications Liam’s shocking reappearance brought, no matter the riot of emotions storms within her, she could not lose sight of her goal.
Her pack, her people, and her family need her.
Defending their packs, and protecting her family, took priority over everything - even her own conflicted heart.
As the head Alpha, she would keep her wolves unified and strong.
She only prayed she proved resilient enough to see this campaign through to its resolution, whatever that may be.
After ending the call with her mother, Anastasia sighed heavily and turned...only to find Alex standing in the doorway.
The young wolf had clearly just washed and dressed nearly to start his day, his unruly hair still damp.
Though his clothes were neatly pressed, there was a hesitant air about him, as if he was not quite sure of his welcome.
It broke Anastasia’s heart to think her son/brother had ever felt unloved or rejected by her.
Softening her expression into a warm smile, she opened her arms invitingly. "Come here, little one."
Alex’s eyes widened momentarily before a sunny grin blossomed across his cherubic features.
He rushed into her embrace, small arms winding tightly around her as she hugged him fiercely.
Pressing a tender kiss to the crown of his head, she murmured, "Well done getting yourself ready this morning. I saw them playing with Willow outside, does she keep company? Do you enjoy spending time with her?"
"Yes, we ran together. Luna’s land is so beautiful. She showed me around and let me play with her toys too." Alex responded with a wide smile on his face.
He is happy because he had fun this morning with Willow and is extra happy for being held by Anastasia.
Anastasia rarely holds him, talks to him, and listens to him, lately in the last six months, she suddenly changed and he has been so happy with this change.
Pulling back, she ruffled his hair affectionately. "Shall we join the others for breakfast? I bet you are hungry after running around with Willow."
Nodding eagerly, Alex grasped her hand as they made their way downstairs to the packhouse’s dining hall.
Xavier, Philip, Liam, Willow, and Caleb were already gathered, servants fussing about setting out a grand breakfast spread.
"Good morning," Anastasia offered politely as she guided Alex to their places at the long table.
Though she determinedly averted her gaze from Liam, she could feel the weight of his studious gare burning into her. freewebnσvel.cѳm
She could feel how much he hated the fact that she is there but has to suck it up because both packs need each other to survive.
"Good morning, Anastasia," Xavier replied genially, his warm hazel eyes twinkling. "Did you rest well?"
Forcing an agreeable smile, she replied, "Yes, thank you. Quite well. The packed house was very quiet last night."
As the pack members helped themselves to the tempting food, Xavier spoke up again between bites of food. "When can we expect the arrival of your warriors from the Midnight lands? I’m eager to meet them."
Anastasia hummed thoughtfully, her gaze drifting to the clock adorning the wall. "They should be here...now."
No sooner had the words left her lips than a sharp rap sounded at the door.
A servant hurried to answer it, welcoming a man who seemed in his late twenties, by looking at his clothes, she could tell he was one of the guards.
"Alpha. Your warriors have arrived and await your presence in the courtyard." The guard spoke with respect clear in his tone.
A hush fell over the room as all eyes turned expectantly toward Anastasia.
Drawing a fortifying breath, she rose from her chair with Alex at her side.
"If you will excuse me," she said politely but with an undercurrent of command.
With that, she swept from the dining hall, the promise of her newly strengthened forces reinvigorating her resolve.
The amalgamation of their packs would be no simple accomplishment...but it was a vital step toward their mutual survival against the elusive enemy hunting them all.
"They came quickly," Xavier said with an approving nod as the last plates were cleared away from breakfast.
Philip stood up first, giving Anastasia a respectful nod before hurrying outside.
As her lead warrior and trainer, it was his job to greet the warriors arriving from Anastasia’s Midnight pack.
The others followed behind, making their way to the courtyard where nearly fifty rugged wolves from Anastasia’s homeland stood at the ready.
Anastasia paused, surveying the determined faces of her loyal warriors.
Speaking loudly so all could hear, she explained, " Everyone, you are been called here to help our allies, the Luna pack. A dangerous enemy is attacking both our lands."
She described the vicious assaults, the homes destroyed, and the lives lost to this mysterious foe. ƒrēewebnovel.com
"By combining our packs’ strength, we have a chance to stop these attacks and protect our people and our lands." she paused to look at her warriors’ faces " We need to be mature and understand that we are one. I don’t want any fights or issues between us and the Luna’s warriors. Because the clock is ticking and can not waste our time having stupid fights."
A rumble of approval rose from the assembled wolves.
They were ready to meet this challenge head-on.
"Then let’s get to it," Anastasia stated, a small smile playing on her lips.
From there, the two packs merged together with surprising ease.
The Midnight pack wolves were quickly shown to their new room, the Luna pack members acting as friendly guides.
"That was amazing," Xavier said, walking over to stand beside Anastasia. "I have never seen different packs join forces so smoothly before."
He shook his head in wonder.
Wolf packs are usually very territorial and distrustful of outsiders.
Fortunately, the warriors seem to understand that petty feuds won’t help against the threat they are facing.
Anastasia nodded. "Our people know that disunity makes us vulnerable against this enemy." Her gaze drifted to where Alex played happily with Willow. "Whatever evil this is, whatever battles lie ahead, together we will overcome it. We have no other choice."
