Chapter 6: Saga 6—This City . ..Ain’t that Bad
Bright blue light emerged in the woods on the outskirts of Renodin, just a few miles away from the city gate.
Kael’s body manifested close to a prickly tree branch.
"Ouch!"
He flapped his hands around in annoyance.
"Hahaha, very funny, system," he hissed.
[Renodin is just a walk from here.]
The system paid no mind to Kael and only informed him of the location of the capital city.
’I better get a move on.’
He couldn’t risk staying in the woods any longer—to avoid any unforeseen circumstances.
He made his way through the woods, battling overgrown tree branches.
First, sunlight spilled forth—then a clear view of the capital city. Even at a distance, idle chatter and the rustling sound of carriages could be heard.
The tall brick wall with many spires stood proudly. The large metal gate in the middle was hard to miss.
The most prominent structures that stood out immediately were the Central Hunters Guild, Regal Renodin Academy, and the Royal Castle.
The flags of each of these powerful factions were hung on both sides of the city wall. The sight of them always welcomed individuals to the capital city.
Kael made his way to the city gate, where two soldiers clad in light metal armour were stationed.
"State your business in Renodin," the gray-haired soldier said with his head held high—not sparing Kael a glance.
’What a rude bastard.’ The thought of smacking his smug face passed through Kael’s mind.
’Should I tell them I’m here to re-register as a Hunter—’
’That won’t make any sense—’
’I have got it!’
The idea of telling them the truth was fleeting, so he chose another route.
"I am Kael LongHeart... a transfer student from the Far East."
Kael jumbled up a lie based on the flyer he saw on the ground that stated that Renodin Academy was currently accepting transfer students.
"Oh! Is that so—"
"Normally, we would have you show us an ID, but I heard they don’t have those in the East."
The red-haired soldier, who seemed overly jovial, answered Kael.
"Eh... isn’t that just a rumour, though?" the gray-haired soldier furrowed a brow.
"No, it isn’t, mister. IDs are a taboo where I’m from."
Kael cut in immediately—he didn’t have any ID on him apart from his Hunter’s licence.
"And where would that be?"
The gray-haired soldier started to feel that something was off.
’Holy shit!’ Kael’s mind went blank; he didn’t know the name of any kingdom in the East.
"Lingxo—"
"You wouldn’t hav—"
"Ahh, Lingxo. Some merchants from there just passed through here earlier."
The red-haired soldier interrupted Kael.
"Can you pipe down a notch?" the gray-haired soldier rolled his eyes.
"Oh! Sorry, I interrupted."
The red-haired soldier chuckled.
’No probs.’ He had basically just saved Kael’s ass, so he didn’t mind the interruption.
"Nothing—"
"That was all I meant to say."
Kael adjusted his collar.
"Fine—" The gray-haired soldier took a deep breath. He placed his hands all over Kael’s body to check for weapons.
"He is clean, let him in," he signalled the soldiers on the other side of the wall to open the gate.
"Good luck." The red-haired soldier gave Kael a thumbs up.
"Thanks a bunch."
Kael walked past the checkpoint.
’Wooo... That was close.’
He let out a sigh of relief—the last thing he wanted was to get questioned by the capital’s soldiers, who were very much known for their brutality.
He went straight to the Hunters Guild—if there was any place to gain information about his target, it was the Hunters Guild.
The streets were very busy compared to Trion Village. An old woman called Kael from inside her tent.
"Young man who may be more than just a man."
The granny looked shady—but Kael’s instincts said otherwise.
’She may be shady, but I have always wanted to have my fortune told.’
From the orb that glimmered on the stool in front of the old woman, Kael had already deduced that she was a fortune teller.
"Greetings, wise one."
Kael bowed his head, then entered a perfect lotus position.
"Child, you do have your ways with words."
The granny chuckled.
"I am sure you already know what I do."
"Not that you seem to care for who I am."
She slid a hand over the orb, and it glinted.
’I bet her identity ain’t that special.’
Figuring out her identity wasn’t even on Kael’s priority list.
"What I would like to know is how much for your services?"
Kael dipped a hand into his pouch.
The old woman stretched forth a hand.
"No, no—"
"That’s not needed, child. I will give you a free reading today."
She placed a hand on the orb.
"But—"
"Even if I asked you to pay—the price would simply be too heavy for you to pay now."
The old woman smiled.
’Too heavy?... Eh, excuse you. I am very much rich right now.’ Kael couldn’t wrap his head around what she said at the moment.
"Lend me your hand, child."
The granny extended an arm.
"Sure." Kael placed his hand atop hers.
Blinding purple light flashed from the orb. The granny then let go of his hand.
’Whoa! That was fast.’
"I have one sentence for you, child—"
"Nothing is as it seems; trust is an accessory, not a right."
The granny let go of his hand.
’Woooo, mystical but short.’
"Thanks for the free reading, wise one."
Kael stood and turned around, just about to leave the tent, when the old woman spoke.
"No, thank you for choosing to come here."
She said it in a mysterious and unsettling manner.
’Weird.’
Kael left the tent and continued his journey towards the Hunters Guild. Finally, the flag of the Central Guild came into view. A large and buttressed building that could pass for a mansion lay behind the flags.
The building was brimming with Hunters. There was barely any space to pass despite how huge the building was.
Kael had no choice but to brute-force his way through the crowd—to the fourth receptionist’s desk.
"Hello, and welcome to the Renodin Hunters Guild."
"How may I be of help?"
The receptionist bowed her head slightly.
"I would like to regis—"
The rest of his statement got muffled in a sudden eruption of cheers.
The doors of the guild hall burst open—radiant light spilled forth. Four prominent figures, each commanding a heavy presence, walked into the hall.
The other Hunters clapped, cheered, and sang their praises.
"Who might they be?" Kael asked the receptionist.
"Only the most powerful S-rank party in the capital city—"
"Azure Blake!"
