Chapter 4: Saga 4— Now I Have to Fend Off ....a Whole Pack of Direwolves
About a year ago, when Kael’s mother was still very much ill but alive, he went to beg the guild master for a loan that would be deducted from his earnings on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, the guild master refused to help—but he also gave Kael another option: a 50-year contract with the Trion Hunters Guild.
So basically, Kael would not be allowed to register under any other Hunters Guild for the next 50 years to come. He knew that the guild master was trying to ensnare him in a trap since he saw potential in him.
Many promising hunters like him had already gotten caught in this honey-pot trap. Most worked themselves to death. Not only were their debts piling up, but they couldn’t work in another Hunters Guild.
Knowing this, Kael refused the offer. And now that he had come back, the guild master planned to use the opportunity to get him to sign the contract.
"Listen... I said I wanted to re-register, not strike some deal with you."
"Unfortunately, dear Kael, signing this contract is the only way you get back into the guild—"
"Except you aren’t in need of money."
The guild master sneered. He thought he had Kael trapped, and Kael would have no option but to accept his offer.
"Well, I guess I will be taking my leave."
Kael stood and turned towards the door.
"Oh really? Well, I wish you the best of luck."
The guild master smiled.
’What a disgusting old man.’
Kael opened the door and left.
’It wouldn’t be long before he comes begging.’
The master had the utmost confidence that Kael would come back.
"I see things didn’t work out for you."
The receptionist laughed.
Kael paid no mind to her or the others; he simply made his way out of the guild.
’I should have known better than to expect anything good from this shithole.’
He sat down on a bench, calculating what his next move would be.
"If only someone could offer me some reasonable help."
He let out a frustrated sigh.
[Update!]
[Impromptu Task available]
[Fend off the horde of Direwolves that are heading towards the village before they cause any damage]
[Threat level: low medium]
[Reward: 50,000 Gold coins]
[Time limit: 00:59:59]
’Touché.’
He never thought his system could be this useful. But he spoke too soon.
[Update!]
[Threat level: high medium]
[Time limit: 00:29:59]
"Are you fucking kidding me?"
Kael groaned. Low-medium Direwolves he could handle, but a pack of high-medium Direwolves were a stretch even for him.
[Additional rewards: 30,000 Gold coins]
"This doesn’t justify the sudden change—"
"But I’ll take it."
Apart from being a stickler for money—eighty thousand gold coins was a lot. The average hunter couldn’t dream of making such an amount.
The clock was already ticking, and Kael had no time to waste. He made his way outside the village gate. After walking a short distance, he could already see the dust being raised by the Direwolves.
"Okay, time to get started!"
He spread open both hands, waiting for a sword or something to appear.
’Oh shit!’
He didn’t pay attention to the explanation about how to access his inventory.
"I can’t use my bare hands to slay them."
The Direwolves were less than a second away from him. He closed his eyes by instinct to prevent the entry of dust. At that moment, he saw a vast and large space that seemed endless.
He took a closer look and discovered all his equipment—he could feel and touch them vividly.
’Ok! This wasn’t what I was expecting—’
’This is no time to be amused, Kael. Pull yourself together.’
He didn’t have a single second to spare. He didn’t know if time here and the outside world flowed the same way.
’If I can feel and touch them, then I can grab and pull them out with me.’
He selected the mana stone, self-repairable sword, and the holy sword. Kael opened his eyes to the view of a Direwolf about to pounce on him from above with its claws.
Kael clutched the hilts of his blades—then swung them in half circles below and above, which made a full circle.
"Deacon Cleave!"
He sliced the Direwolf into two halves.
[The host has gained ×10 EXP]
[The host has leveled up!]
[The host has leveled up!]
[LVL 6 > 8]
’I didn’t know I could level up?—’
’And when did I get to level six?’
This was the first "level up" notification he had received ever since he got the system, yet he was already at level six.
’Tsk! I guess I’ll have to ask later.’
The Direwolf Alpha marked Kael as prey—which sent all the other Direwolves into a crazed state that caused them to attack Kael indiscriminately.
Kael grounded himself on the earth—he changed into a forward stance, one sword forward and the other backward. He took a deep breath.
"Twin Blade Technique:—"
The earth cracked under his feet—then he vanished out of the Direwolves’ line of sight. The next time they noticed him, he was already mid-air—above their clueless heads.
With a speed that they couldn’t comprehend, he unleashed devastating slashes that turned them all into a puddle of green gooey muck.
"Tartarous Dismemberment."
His next target was the Direwolf Alpha.
’I’m guessing he’s the reason why the threat level went up.’
The Direwolf Alpha had a unique ability—Berserk, which increased its strength and speed tenfold; most C-rank hunters could barely hold their ground.
’Well, it’s not something I can’t handle.’
The deep blue fur on the Alpha sizzled with sparks of crimson-red mana, and finally, the red light consumed the Direwolf Alpha—its pupils turned red like a blood moon.
"GRAHHHHHH!"
The Alpha growled. A gust of wind erupted from its mouth—strong enough to knock lightweights off their feet.
"Hum... hum. Real intimidating."
Kael swiveled his face away—the Alpha’s breath stank of fish.
A double-coloured spell circle emerged beneath his feet.
The Alpha swung its claws at Kael with zero direction whatsoever—then it went in with its teeth.
What seemed like an eternity for Kael was only but a fleeting moment for the Direwolf Alpha.
The next instant, Kael stood behind the Alpha. The Alpha immediately tried to change direction, but its body fell down in numerous chunks.
"Aquio Revaden!"
Kael fell to the ground on his butt. His breathing heaved.
’I barely have any mana left.’
He felt the ground rumble. His eyes darted around, but there was nothing—only for him to look up to see a red-scaled dragon descending to the ground.
[Impromptu Task update!]
