Chapter 2: Saga 2—Got to Make some ... Money
’Of course this bastard system is going to attach critical risks that could end my life to perfectly okay rewards.’
Kael wasn’t even surprised at this point. He took a seat and carefully went through the list of items that could very well determine his future and the course of his journey.
’The location assist... is absolutely necessary. At least now I won’t have to search aimlessly for the system holders.’
He tapped the location assist. It was simply indispensable and would greatly reduce the time needed to find his redirected systems.
[Assist chosen: 1/4]
’The dick increment assist sounds tempting.’
As someone who had been a virgin all his life, the only thing that could count as intimacy was when he kissed the bar hostess, after which he was interrupted by some hooligans.
’But impaired intelligence and madness seem like a bit of a stretch, so I’m gonna pass—’
’The teleportation assist seems reasonable. All I need is to get some gol—’
"Gold coins!"
He had just recalled that he was currently dead broke and didn’t have a single copper coin on him.
’Tsk! I just have to re-sign up for that rundown, goddamn Hunters Guild—’
"Again!" He let out an exhausted sigh. Kael had quite an experience while working under Trion Hunters Guild.
’It’s not like I have a choice...’ He waited for a moment, thinking that his system might offer some kind of shortcut.
’Tsk.’
He added the teleportation assist to the list.
[2/4]
He already had his mind set on the last two assists.
’Immortality assist and equipment assist. Those two are non-negotiable.’
He clicked both assists without any hesitation. A free revival and two overpowered pieces of equipment—he couldn’t simply pass them up.
[4/4]
[The host should proceed to pick two equipment items.]
He looked through the list of equipment and realised some of them had deadly side effects, like the Death Note—which takes fifty years off his lifespan.
’Personally, I have a few people I would want to kill like that irritating guild master and that slut of a receptionist—’
’But fifty years is a bit much... so I will skip it.’
He noticed something while scrolling through the list of equipment—
’I can use the mana stone to offset the cons of the holy sword.’
He had just made an amazing discovery. Though the swift boots were nice, continual dispelling of debuffs was hard to pass up.
Especially when fighting fiends.
Kael chose the holy sword and the mana stone.
[The host has successfully acquired two pieces of equipment, which have been deposited into the host’s inventory.]
Kael took a deep breath. He couldn’t just stay and keep mourning his dead mother while some randos were making use of his rewards (systems).
"Time to head back to that disgusting shithole of a Hunters Guild."
After a year and a half, Kael was headed back to the same place he had once abandoned.
The barn he lived in was on a hill a few kilometres away from the village of Trion. From the top of the hill, he could have a view of the bustling village of Trion.
Trion was one of the most prominent villages of the Windeburg Kingdom. It was a mini hub for merchants and hunters, mostly due to the village being stationed on the Narail Path (a famous travelling route that led directly to the capital city of Renodin).
Normal people usually climbed down the hill given its height (thirty feet to be precise)—but Kael was an experienced hunter, even though he had quit at E-Rank. He had quite the moves.
’Wa... wait a minute—’ He stopped himself over a thought he had just had.
’How the hell do I know how many gold coins I’m gonna need if I don’t know where I’m headed?’
The system clearly stated that the amount of gold coins varied based on the location—kind of like transportation fare.
"Eh... shitbag system..." he grunted.
[Yes... Douchebag host.]
The feeling of hatred was mutual between the two.
"I am gonna shove that off for now." Kael knew he had more pressing concerns.
"I intend to make use of the location assist."
[Location assist initialized.]
In that brief instant, Kael felt his senses expanding beyond the usual. He could hear people talking in the village—he could see the birds flying high above and feel every grain of sand he stood upon.
’I’m like a living detector.’ He sneered.
[Status: Currently searching for target.]
[Update!]
[Three targets have been found.]
’Three? I was expecting more, but oh well.’
In his mind’s eye, he could see three lights, each with different colours—red, green, and white.
Out of all the lights that were shown, the white one flickered, as if it were unstable, constantly going off and on.
This caught Kael’s attention instantly.
"Ehh... system, why is that light doing that?"
[That is because....]
[Please select the light you would like me to reveal the location of.]
Kael was flabbergasted by the system’s sudden diversion from his question.
"Ehh... I don’t know if you got me wrong. I asked what the hell is wrong with the white light."
He even demonstrated with his hands to make the message clearer.
[You have 5 seconds left to choose, or else you will be restricted from using the location assist for the next seven days.]
Out of nowhere, his system started to threaten him—so Kael had no choice but to oblige for now.
"I choose the white... light." He let out a defeated sigh.
[Choice acknowledged....]
[The location of the Sword System will now be revealed.]
[Location: Regal Academy of Renodin.]
[Target: The Sword Princess.]
[Break a leg. (Literally.)]
Many questions popped into Kael’s mind, but he had to ask the most important one first.
"My not-so-competent system... how am I going to retrieve my system from her?" He strained his eyes, eagerly waiting for a reply.
[You will have to...]
[That will be all.]
"Hey, answer me!" he yelped.
[That will be all, not-so-honourable host.]
That’s how they kept on going back and forth until Kael finally got tired of it all.
He had yet another disturbing thought.
’That’s it! I remember clearly the Sword Princess is a famous S-Rank hunter in the capital.’
He had heard her name from the passing merchants and the gossip in the local Hunters Guild.
’Then why would I be looking for the Sword Princess in the Regal Academy to begin with?’
Kael felt deep in his bone marrow that something wasn’t adding up.
"Whatever the scheme or plot—"
"I’m sure as hell going to retrieve my rewards (systems)."
