Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Already an Old Married Couple
Just then, a woman in an apron came out. She was holding a six or seven-month-old baby in one arm and a pack of beer in the other, while shouting over her shoulder, "An order of stir-fried conch for table four!"
She handed the beer to a table of customers, along with a bottle opener. "Sorry about that, we’re swamped right now. Thanks for waiting. I’ll give you guys a discount later."
Most of the customers here were students or local residents, so everyone was pretty familiar with each other. This particular table was all students. Hearing her offer, they all called out to her, saying she was generous, which made the woman laugh heartily.
After a few minutes of friendly chatter, she turned to head back inside. As she did, a casual glance made her face light up with joy.
"Oh my, Dr. Sutton, what are you doing here!" The woman ran over, still holding the baby. "You should have called us ahead of time! I would have gone to the alley entrance to meet you!"
As she spoke, she reached out her hand, but then seemed to remember something and quickly wiped it on her apron.
Yvonne quickly took her hand and smiled. "Mrs. Miller, there’s no need to be so formal with me."
"Quick, come inside! I’ll have my husband whip up a few of his specialty dishes to welcome you properly," Mrs. Miller said excitedly.
With that, she started pulling Yvonne toward their home, completely oblivious to Wyatt Shaw.
"Mrs. Miller, am I invisible or something?" Wyatt Shaw said wryly.
Mrs. Miller looked over at the sound of his voice, only then noticing Wyatt Shaw.
"Huh? Wyatt Shaw, you’re back in the country?"
"Just got back yesterday. I..."
Before Wyatt Shaw could finish, Mrs. Miller thrust the baby into his arms.
"Quick, you hold Dottie while I entertain Dr. Sutton. Oh, right, I haven’t introduced you two yet."
She pointed at Wyatt Shaw for Yvonne’s benefit. "His name is Wyatt Shaw. He works at a big company and makes a ton of money. Plus, he’s handsome—look at that face! He could totally give those TV stars a run for their money."
Then she pointed at Yvonne to introduce her to Wyatt Shaw. "Dr. Sutton is a doctor at Seabrook Hospital. She’s the one who saved my life and Dottie’s! It was so dangerous back then... no one else dared to take the case. We were so lucky Dr. Sutton stepped up."
After saying that, she nudged Wyatt Shaw with her elbow. "Dr. Sutton is beautiful, isn’t she? And not just beautiful, but kindhearted too. Whoever marries her must have done something right in a past life."
Yvonne blushed, embarrassed by the praise. "I was just doing my duty as a doctor."
Wyatt Shaw laughed. "Mrs. Miller, don’t tell me you’re trying to set me up with Dr. Sutton."
Mrs. Miller slapped Wyatt Shaw’s arm. "Behave yourself! Don’t go scaring the young lady."
At her words, both Wyatt Shaw and Yvonne burst out laughing.
"Hey, what are you two laughing about?" freēwēbηovel.c૦m
Wyatt Shaw then took Yvonne’s hand, deliberately holding it up for Mrs. Miller to see.
"You two..."
"We just got our marriage certificate this morning. It’s been a little over two hours, so you could say we’re an old married couple already."
Mrs. Miller’s eyes went wide as she stared at the two of them in disbelief.
"For... for real?"
She directed the question at Yvonne, which just went to show how much of a jokester Wyatt Shaw usually was.
Yvonne nodded. "For real."
Mrs. Miller froze for a second, then burst out laughing. "Oh, that’s wonderful! I can’t wait, I have to tell Chad this great news right away!"
With that, Mrs. Miller forgot all about entertaining them and dashed back inside, bursting with excitement.
Wyatt Shaw tilted his head, looking at Yvonne. "I guess our fate was sealed a long time ago."
Yvonne teased Dottie, who was still in Wyatt Shaw’s arms. "Maybe we’ve even met before. After all, I studied at Aethelgard U for eight years, and you come back here often."
Dottie was a premature baby. At the time, Mrs. Miller had been overworking herself for days running the business when she suddenly started bleeding one night. Chad Miller rushed her to the hospital.
Yvonne happened to be on duty that night. Mrs. Miller’s condition was critical; not only did she have pregnancy-induced hypertension, but she was also hemorrhaging. In a situation like that, it’s hard enough to save the mother, let alone the baby.
The other two doctors on call didn’t dare take the case, so she was the only one left to step in.
The surgery took six or seven hours, but miraculously, both mother and child were saved.
Because Mrs. Miller often brought Dottie to the hospital to see her, she and Dottie were quite familiar. She played with Dottie for a moment, and once the little one recognized her, she reached out to be held.
"Hey, get a good look at who I am. I’m your godfather!" Wyatt Shaw turned Dottie’s little face toward him, but the baby stubbornly lunged for Yvonne’s arms instead.
Yvonne reached out, took the baby, and kissed the little one’s forehead.
"You’re Dottie’s godfather?"
"Self-proclaimed."
Yvonne laughed. "Doesn’t that make me Dottie’s godmother, then?"
"No doubt about it."
The two of them played with the baby for a while longer before heading toward the restaurant together.
Chad Miller was busy in the back kitchen, but he still found a moment to come out and congratulate them.
"Order whatever you want. Lunch is on your big brother today."
Wyatt Shaw snorted. "We weren’t planning on paying anyway."
"Look at the nerve on my little brother. Takes after me."
’Their friendship was clearly genuine, but how did a scruffy little restaurant owner and a corporate elite even cross paths?’
Wyatt Shaw handed Dottie back to Mrs. Miller, then led Yvonne upstairs.
Compared to the clutter of the first floor, the second floor was much cleaner and tidier.
"Mr. Miller’s family lives up here, but I have a room too."
Wyatt Shaw led Yvonne to the westernmost room. He pushed the door open, revealing a space that was just as clean and tidy as the hallway. The room wasn’t large; it held a single bed and a large bookshelf overflowing with books.
Posters of basketball stars were taped to the walls, and a shelf displayed various model race cars. It was clearly a boy’s room.
"Back in middle school, I ran away from home. Mr. Miller found me, and I started hanging out with him after that." A smile touched Wyatt Shaw’s eyes as he reminisced. "Me, Chad Miller, David Sutton, and Abbott... the four of us were all around thirteen or fourteen. We spent our days running wild, getting into trouble like crazy. Our biggest worry was just figuring out how to fill our stomachs."
Yvonne sat down next to Wyatt Shaw, and he naturally wrapped his arm around her, pulling her into his embrace.
"Why did you run away?"
"Because of my dad. I wanted to study music, to get into a conservatory. He wouldn’t allow it and even smashed my guitar. Back then, I didn’t understand my parents. I felt like they had no right to interfere in my life, so I ran away in a fit of anger. Later... I regretted it."
"Oh?"
"Abbott was the oldest of the four of us. He had a younger sister, and one time she was hospitalized for appendicitis and needed money for surgery. But he didn’t have any, and he didn’t tell us. He went out alone to try and rob someone, but in the end... he ended up getting stabbed to death by his target."
Hearing this, Yvonne was utterly shocked. She also noticed Wyatt Shaw’s body trembling slightly and quickly held him tighter.
’That incident must have left a deep shadow on him.’
"After that happened, I went home. I accepted my family’s arrangements, went to a top middle school and high school, and then studied abroad."
Yvonne didn’t know how to comfort Wyatt Shaw, so she tilted her head up and kissed his chin. He lowered his head and captured her lips, then chuckled softly before pushing her down onto his single bed.
After a long, intimate moment, a sudden knock sounded at the door.
"Wyatt Shaw, quick! David Sutton’s in a fight at the freight yard!"
The moment he heard that, Wyatt Shaw let go of Yvonne.
"You go on downstairs and eat. I’ll go check it out and be right back."
Yvonne, who had never witnessed a situation like this, quickly grabbed Wyatt Shaw’s arm. "Don’t be reckless!"
"Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing!"
