Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Setting the Rules Before a Fight

Yvonne Sutton followed Wyatt Shaw downstairs, all the way to the door. Seeing Chad Miller rush ahead, not even bothering to take off his apron and gripping a tire iron in his hand, she grew even more worried.

Mrs. Miller, however, seemed used to it. Holding Dottie, she chased after them and shouted, "Chad Miller, come right back after you’re done fighting! I can’t manage here by myself!"

Yvonne Sutton took Dottie and told Mrs. Miller to get back to work.

"David Sutton has a transportation team. He and the other teams all haul goods from the freight yard. Sometimes, when work is scarce, they fight over jobs. It’s nothing serious," Mrs. Miller said.

But hearing that only made Yvonne Sutton more worried.

Mrs. Miller smiled. "If Chad Miller went alone, I’d actually be worried. But with Wyatt Shaw going along, I’m not. He really knows his limits and won’t let things get out of hand."

Yvonne Sutton nodded. Just then, Dottie started to fuss in her arms, likely out of boredom.

"I’ll take Dottie outside to play for a bit."

A customer called for Mrs. Miller. She answered, then turned back to Yvonne Sutton. "The food’s ready?"

"I’ll wait for Wyatt to come back to eat."

"Alright then."

After saying that, Mrs. Miller hurried off to attend to her customers.

Yvonne Sutton walked outside with little Dottie in her arms. The small alley was quite lively, with vendors selling all sorts of things.

Following the alley to its end led to Aethelgard University. From outside the iron fence, she could see the university’s soccer field and the library in the distance. To the west of the library was their medical school.

"Yay! Yay!" Dottie bounced excitedly in her arms upon seeing people play on the soccer field.

Yvonne Sutton lifted the little one higher so he could see more clearly.

It was lunchtime, and many students were coming over to pick up their takeout orders.

She suddenly remembered that one of her dorm mates loved the dumplings from The Lucky Spoon. She would often call to place an order and then come by to pick it up ten minutes or so later.

One time, her roommate placed an order and then got invited out for a meal, so she asked Yvonne to pick it up and eat it for her.

"Their dumplings are amazing. You have to try them."

Yvonne Sutton rarely ate takeout. Because Vincent Reed didn’t like it, she had taught herself how to cook. She would run back and forth to his rented apartment every day to make him meals, grabbing a bite for herself while she was at it.

Her studies at medical school were demanding enough, yet she was also acting as Vincent Reed’s maid. ’How was I not exhausted back then?’

That time, Vincent Reed happened to be on a business trip, so she didn’t need to return to the rented apartment to cook for him and agreed to pick up her roommate’s takeout. She remembered the delivery person was a girl with short hair. The reason the memory was so vivid was that the girl had injuries on her face.

"Do you need help treating that?" she had asked kindly.

But the girl shot her a glare. "Do you Aethelgard U students just love pitying people?"

"I’m not," Yvonne Sutton said, shaking her head.

"Hmph. What’s so great about you, anyway."

The girl shoved the food container at her and stormed off in a huff.

Yvonne Sutton was left completely bewildered, but thinking back on it now, those dumplings really were delicious. They were the three-delicacy kind, each one plump, fragrant, and not at all greasy. She later ordered the same three-delicacy dumplings from The Lucky Spoon herself, but they just didn’t taste the same.

Kids are just like that. One moment they’re bouncing with excitement, and the next, they let out a yawn and are ready for a nap.

Yvonne Sutton headed back, holding little Dottie. The customers at the outdoor tables had mostly left, and an employee was clearing the tables. Mrs. Miller was delivering a plate of dumplings to a private room, and when she came out and saw her son had fallen asleep, she took him from Yvonne Sutton’s arms and carried him upstairs.

A short while later, Mrs. Miller came back downstairs. Seeing Yvonne Sutton wiping a table, she quickly took over.

"Dr. Sutton, this is dirty work. You can’t be doing this."

"It’s fine. I cook, do the dishes, and wipe the tables at home, too."

"Doesn’t Wyatt Shaw do any of it?"

"Ah, he does too."

In truth, she was thinking of the past. Back when she was with Vincent Reed, she was the one who did all the chores.

"Let me tell you, you can’t spoil a man." Mrs. Miller efficiently wiped the table clean, then leaned in close to Yvonne Sutton and whispered, "I’m telling you, Wyatt Shaw is an amazing cook. Have him do the cooking from now on."

"I’ve had the seafood noodles he made. They were delicious."

"Right? He used to work as a cook here for me."

A thought occurred to Yvonne Sutton, and she asked, "Does he know how to make three-delicacy dumplings, then?"

"They’re his specialty!" Mrs. Miller went on to say that when Wyatt Shaw was studying abroad, he would come help out at their place during school breaks instead of going home. The dumplings he made were so good that after he went back to school, Chad Miller couldn’t replicate the flavor and even got chewed out by the Aethelgard U students for it.

"So it really was him." Yvonne Sutton now truly felt that fate worked in mysterious ways. "Oh, right. Back then, there was also a girl with short hair helping out at your restaurant, wasn’t there?"

She had only mentioned it casually, but upon hearing this, Mrs. Miller’s expression suddenly changed.

"You know... you know about Candice Abbott?"

"So that was her name, Candice Abbott. I ordered dumplings from your restaurant once, and she was the one who delivered them."

"Oh, I see. I thought Wyatt Shaw might have mentioned her to you." At this, Mrs. Miller sighed. "She... she’s passed away."

Mrs. Miller didn’t seem to want to talk much about Candice Abbott, so Yvonne Sutton didn’t press the issue.

After waiting a while longer, Wyatt Shaw and Chad Miller finally returned. With them was a tall, sturdy-looking man. All three had injuries on their faces, but they were all smiling.

Wyatt Shaw was carrying something in the front of his shirt, and he ran over as soon as he saw her at the entrance.

"I picked some winter jujubes for you. They’re really sweet."

Yvonne Sutton took a couple of steps forward and saw that Wyatt Shaw’s shirt was indeed full of winter jujubes. Each one was as big as a walnut, bright red and looking deliciously fresh. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

Chad Miller tossed the tire iron aside and pointed at Wyatt Shaw with a laugh. "You have no idea how infuriating this guy is. He beats the crap out of someone, and then as we’re leaving, he insists on following the guy home to pick his jujubes."

Wyatt Shaw grinned. "Hey, one thing at a time. He was actually pretty happy to have me."

"What gave you the idea he was happy to have you?"

"He smiled."

"Damn it, that smile was uglier than crying."

Mrs. Miller brought over a metal basin for Wyatt Shaw to put the winter jujubes in.

Once the jujubes were in the basin, Wyatt Shaw presented them to Yvonne Sutton as if showing off a treasure.

"I’ll go wash them for you."

Yvonne Sutton had him put the jujubes down. Then she turned his face toward hers and examined his injuries carefully. "Let me take care of your wounds first."

"It’s nothing, just a few scratches."

"They still need to be treated."

Wyatt Shaw didn’t argue. "Alright, whatever you say."

The first-aid kit was upstairs, and Wyatt Shaw pulled her along with him. While she was treating his wounds, Yvonne Sutton had been bending over, but Wyatt Shaw pulled her down to sit on his lap.

Treating his wounds in this position, their thoughts soon strayed from the task at hand. freёwebnovel.com

"It would be such a shame for a face like this to get even a little scratched." Her mind was already hazy after his barrage of kisses.

"You like my face?"

"I do."

"Then I’ll warn them next time not to aim for the face."

Yvonne Sutton laughed at his words. "Is that something you can negotiate?"

"Sure. We’ll just set some ground rules before we fight, to keep things from getting too heated."

When they came down from the second floor, Chad Miller and David Sutton had already started drinking.

Wyatt Shaw led Yvonne Sutton over and they exchanged introductions with David Sutton.

David Sutton seemed to hold some prejudice against her, offering only a curt greeting. But when he heard that she and Wyatt had already registered their marriage, he suddenly stood up, kicked the chair behind him, and stormed off.
