Chapter 26: Chapter 26: What Lies Northeast

Eight days remained of the Sacred World Tree enhancement period.

The settlement had reached thirty-six citizens.

Five more blossoms had opened since the cultivation work began. The rhythm of daily life had deepened. Luna managed operations through the Citizen Role Assignment system with minimal input. Sylvia ran training without supervision. Mira’s construction proceeded according to her own planning.

Which gave Kai time for the northeast.

The question indicator on the Realm Resource Map had sat in his awareness since the mapping session. Nova’s words hadn’t left him. *Something old. Very old. That had forgotten it was waiting.*

Today was the day.

The expedition team was small. Kai. Luna. Veil. Nova. Sylvia had argued for inclusion on combat grounds. Kai had considered it. Then decided this felt less like a combat situation and more like one requiring perception and patience.

Sylvia filed a silent objection and returned to training.

They departed after morning exercises. The route northeast was familiar through the hills to the Spirit Stone deposit. Beyond it the terrain changed. Trees became denser and older. Moss covered everything in silver-grey. The air felt heavier. Richer.

Veil’s Spirit Sight worked continuously.

"The flow is stronger here. Considerably stronger than at the deposit."

Luna stayed close. "I can feel it too."

"What does it feel like?"

"Old."

Nova walked slightly ahead. Three tails moving in the slow arcs that meant her Foresight was active. She hadn’t spoken since the settlement.

Another hour beyond the deposit. The trees grew in patterns that felt less random than normal forest. As though something beneath had influenced where they took root across centuries. Their trunks were massive. The silver-grey moss covered everything in an unbroken carpet.

Kai touched a nearby trunk. Warm beneath his fingers. A faint pulse. As though something deep below was breathing slowly.

**Environmental Analysis**

**Current Location: Ancient Growth Zone**

**Classification: Primordial Realm Feature**

**Dominant Energy: World Tree Root Network**

**Status: Dormant**

**Authority Compatibility: High**

World Tree Root Network.

These weren’t separate trees. They were extensions of the Sacred World Tree’s root system surfacing after centuries underground. The entire ancient growth zone was the Sacred World Tree seen from below.

**Realm Feature Discovered**

**Ancient Root Network**

**Classification: Sacred World Tree Extension**

**Dormant Nodes: 7 Confirmed**

**Effect if Awakened: Significant realm-wide spiritual density increase**

**Activation Requirement: Root Heart Convergence**

Root Heart Convergence. All three Root Hearts needed.

Nova stopped in a small clearing among the ancient trees. Looked at the ground.

"Here."

The clearing was twenty meters across. Silver-grey moss covered everything. At the center a rough circle of denser more luminescent moss. Three meters in diameter.

Veil stood at the clearing’s edge. Both hands slightly raised.

"The convergence here is..." She shook her head. "I don’t have words for it." fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

**Realm Feature Discovered**

**Root Heart - Northeast**

**Status: Dormant**

**Activation Potential: Extremely High**

**Combined Effect with Southern Root Heart: Amplified**

**Authority Compatibility: High**

The second Root Heart.

Luna spoke quietly. "What do we do with it?"

"Nothing yet. We need the activation method. And possibly all three before activating any."

Luna thought. "Three might be worth more than three times one."

"Yes."

"Where is the third?"

Kai opened the Realm Resource Map. Compared the two Root Heart locations against the realm’s spiritual flow patterns. The southern Root Heart below the settlement. The northeast one here. The third should follow logically.

"Northwest. The dense forest."

Luna made a note.

Nova crouched at the edge of the moss circle. Not touching it. Studying.

"It’s aware." She stood. "Not like the tree. Not conscious. But aware of being found." She looked at Kai. "It’s been here since before the realm was yours."

The realm had existed before his awakening. Building its own features. Developing its own foundations. Waiting for a god who would understand what it offered.

Veil pointed toward the largest tree at the clearing’s edge.

"That one. The root connection to the Sacred World Tree is strongest there. Of all the nodes in the network, that tree has the most direct line."

Kai pressed both palms against the enormous trunk. The warmth was considerably more intense. The pulse stronger.

**Ancient Node Detected**

**Classification: Primary Root Extension**

**Dormant Capacity: Significant**

**Potential Function: Communication Relay**

Once activated, what happened here the tree would know immediately. What the tree knew about this location, Willow might access directly.

The practical applications were considerable.

The journey back consumed most of the afternoon. Quieter than the outward trip. Everyone processing.

When the settlement appeared across the plains, Kai stopped for a moment.

He looked at it from the outside.

Spirit Stone buildings. Silver river. Sacred World Tree rising above everything. Thirty-six exceptional people living inside it.

Then thought about what lay beneath and around it.

An Ancient Root Network dormant underground. Two Root Hearts discovered. A third waiting. A Primary Root Extension capable of becoming a communication relay. A Deep Realm Cultivation practice barely begun.

The settlement sat on foundations more extraordinary than he had fully understood.

Luna appeared beside him.

"The realm chose well."

Simple. Unhurried. Entirely meant.

Kai looked at the Sacred World Tree.

Felt the familiar pulse of connection between them.

"So did I."

Luna glanced at him briefly. Then away. Her tail moving in the slow arc that meant something she chose not to put into words.

At the gate Iris was waiting.

Forge stood beside her. Pretending to be there for unrelated reasons.

"Did you find anything sparkly?" Iris asked immediately.

Kai thought of the luminescent moss circle. The pulse of the ancient trees.

"In its own way."

Iris looked skeptical. "That means no."

Forge walked away with studied indifference. The tension in her shoulders released slightly as she went.

Nova noticed. Said nothing.

Eight days of enhancement remaining. Two Root Hearts found. One still waiting. Ancient networks beneath the soil. Thirty-six extraordinary people above them.

The foundation was becoming something the divine world had rarely seen.

Everything built upon it would reflect that.
