Seven days remained of the Sacred World Tree enhancement period.
The settlement had reached thirty-eight citizens.
Two more blossoms had opened overnight. Both Uncommon grade. Both absorbed smoothly into the settlement’s expanding rhythm. Luna had housing ready before either child had taken their first steps on grass.
The integration process had become efficient.
Almost practiced.
Yet each new citizen still felt significant.
Still felt like a future being added.
Kai departed for the northwest forest shortly after morning training.
The team was the same as the northeast expedition. Kai. Luna. Veil. Nova. The pattern had worked well enough to repeat.
The northwest route was unfamiliar territory.
The plains west of the settlement gave way to denser grassland. Then scattered trees that gradually thickened into genuine forest. The transition happened slowly enough that Kai didn’t notice the exact moment they crossed from open land into ancient woodland.
Only that at some point the light changed.
Filtered green instead of open gold.
The air thicker with something living.
Veil was monitoring constantly.
"The flow pattern here is different from the northeast."
"Different how?"
"More active." She moved carefully between trees. "The northeast felt dormant. Waiting. This feels like it’s already doing something."
Luna touched the bark of a nearby tree. Pulled her hand back slightly.

They continued deeper.
The forest grew older around them. Trees with trunks too wide for two people to encircle. Root systems erupting from the soil in dramatic formations. Moss everywhere. Not silver-grey like the northeast. This moss was deeper. Almost blue in certain light.

After another thirty minutes the forest opened into a clearing.
Larger than the northeast clearing had been. Thirty meters across. Ancient trees surrounding it completely. Their canopies interlocking overhead creating a cathedral effect. Light filtering through in scattered silver-green columns.
The moss at the center was unmistakable.
Yet different from before.
The southern Root Heart had been dormant. Still. Quiet.
The northeast one had been aware of being found.
This one was doing something.
The moss circle pulsed.

A faint blue-silver light rising and falling like breathing.

She tracked for a long moment.

Kai stared at the pulsing circle.

Nova had entered the clearing without Kai noticing.
She stood at the edge of the moss circle.

"It knows us." She looked back at Kai. "It’s been watching the settlement grow."
"Since the beginning?"

Veil joined them inside the clearing. Her Spirit Sight was clearly working at maximum capacity.
"The energy it’s sending toward the settlement is flowing directly beneath the Sacred World Tree." She tracked something invisible. "It feeds into the root system."
Luna’s eyes widened slightly.
"The tree has been receiving this entire time."
"Without us knowing."
"Yes."
Kai looked at the pulsing circle with new understanding.
The Sacred World Tree’s exceptional spiritual output hadn’t developed purely on its own. This Root Heart had been quietly feeding it for centuries. The tree had grown into something extraordinary partly because of what was being provided from beneath.
Which meant full activation of all three Root Hearts would amplify that existing relationship dramatically.
Not create something new.
Intensify something ancient.
He knelt at the edge of the moss circle.
The warmth was immediately noticeable. Stronger than either previous Root Heart. The pulse visible not just to the eyes but almost perceptible as a physical sensation.

On the return journey the forest felt different.

"You found what you were looking for."
"All three."
"Yet you look like you found a problem."

Luna nodded.
At the gate Iris and Forge were waiting.
Together but maintaining the fiction that they weren’t together.
Iris looked at Kai’s empty hands immediately.
He produced two pieces of the blue-tinted moss he had carefully collected from the clearing’s edge.
Both caught the evening light with an unusual luminescence.
Iris grabbed hers with delight.
Forge accepted hers without reaching for it. Simply waited until Kai held it out.
Then took it immediately.
"Acceptable," she said.
Walked away.
Iris watched her go with a satisfied expression.
"She really wanted one."
"I know."
Seven days of enhancement remaining. Three Root Hearts found. Convergence ritual locked behind an authority rank increase. The path forward clear.
The foundation was complete.
