Chapter 27: Chapter 27: The Third Root Heart
Seven days remained of the Sacred World Tree enhancement period.
The settlement had reached thirty-eight citizens.
Two more blossoms had opened overnight. Both Uncommon grade. Both absorbed smoothly into the settlement’s expanding rhythm. Luna had housing ready before either child had taken their first steps on grass.
The integration process had become efficient.
Almost practiced.
Yet each new citizen still felt significant.
Still felt like a future being added.
Kai departed for the northwest forest shortly after morning training.
The team was the same as the northeast expedition. Kai. Luna. Veil. Nova. The pattern had worked well enough to repeat.
The northwest route was unfamiliar territory.
The plains west of the settlement gave way to denser grassland. Then scattered trees that gradually thickened into genuine forest. The transition happened slowly enough that Kai didn’t notice the exact moment they crossed from open land into ancient woodland.
Only that at some point the light changed.
Filtered green instead of open gold.
The air thicker with something living.
Veil was monitoring constantly.
"The flow pattern here is different from the northeast."
"Different how?"
"More active." She moved carefully between trees. "The northeast felt dormant. Waiting. This feels like it’s already doing something."
Luna touched the bark of a nearby tree. Pulled her hand back slightly.
"Warm."
"Like the northeast."
"Warmer."
They continued deeper.
The forest grew older around them. Trees with trunks too wide for two people to encircle. Root systems erupting from the soil in dramatic formations. Moss everywhere. Not silver-grey like the northeast. This moss was deeper. Almost blue in certain light.
Nova walked with unusual attention.
Her Foresight clearly active.
Yet her expression carried something Kai hadn’t seen during the northeast expedition.
Caution.
"Nova."
She glanced back.
"Something different here?"
A pause.
"The northeast was sleeping." She looked forward again. "This one isn’t entirely."
Kai processed that.
A Root Heart that wasn’t entirely dormant.
The notification from the southern Root Heart had listed all three as dormant. Yet Nova’s perception operated on different terms than an interface readout.
He opened the authority interface as they walked.
Nothing new appeared.
Yet the authority itself felt subtly more attentive than usual. Like a compass needle responding to something nearby.
After another thirty minutes the forest opened into a clearing.
Larger than the northeast clearing had been. Thirty meters across. Ancient trees surrounding it completely. Their canopies interlocking overhead creating a cathedral effect. Light filtering through in scattered silver-green columns.
The moss at the center was unmistakable.
Yet different from before.
The southern Root Heart had been dormant. Still. Quiet.
The northeast one had been aware of being found.
This one was doing something.
The moss circle pulsed.
Slowly.
Rhythmically.
A faint blue-silver light rising and falling like breathing.
Veil stopped at the clearing edge. Both hands raised. Her Spirit Sight processing rapidly.
"It’s circulating energy." Her voice was quiet with focus. "Not just concentrating it. Moving it. Somewhere."
"Where?"
She tracked for a long moment.
"Toward the settlement."
Kai stared at the pulsing circle.
The northwest Root Heart wasn’t dormant.
It was already working.
Slowly. Quietly. Without activation. Without anyone knowing it existed.
He opened the authority interface.
**Realm Feature Discovered**
**Root Heart - Northwest**
**Classification: Natural Spiritual Convergence Point**
**Current Status: Partially Active**
**Output: Steady spiritual energy flow toward settlement area**
**Estimated Active Duration: Centuries**
**Effect if Fully Activated: Dramatic realm-wide spiritual density increase**
**Combined Effect with Other Root Hearts: Multiplicative**
**Activation Requirement: Root Heart Convergence Ritual**
**Authority Compatibility: Very High**
Partially active for centuries.
This Root Heart had been supplying the realm with spiritual energy long before Kai had awakened. Long before any god had claimed the realm. It was part of why the Divine Realm had developed such exceptional foundations without a god’s guidance.
Luna read his expression.
"What does it say?"
"It’s been active for centuries." He looked at the pulsing circle. "It’s part of why the realm is what it is."
The fox maiden was quiet for a moment.
"The realm built itself."
"Partially."
"With help from below."
Nova had entered the clearing without Kai noticing.
She stood at the edge of the moss circle.
Not touching it.
Her three tails completely still.
"It knows us." She looked back at Kai. "It’s been watching the settlement grow."
"Since the beginning?"
"Since before the beginning."
Veil joined them inside the clearing. Her Spirit Sight was clearly working at maximum capacity.
"The energy it’s sending toward the settlement is flowing directly beneath the Sacred World Tree." She tracked something invisible. "It feeds into the root system."
Luna’s eyes widened slightly.
"The tree has been receiving this entire time."
"Without us knowing."
"Yes."
Kai looked at the pulsing circle with new understanding.
The Sacred World Tree’s exceptional spiritual output hadn’t developed purely on its own. This Root Heart had been quietly feeding it for centuries. The tree had grown into something extraordinary partly because of what was being provided from beneath.
Which meant full activation of all three Root Hearts would amplify that existing relationship dramatically.
Not create something new.
Intensify something ancient.
He knelt at the edge of the moss circle.
The warmth was immediately noticeable. Stronger than either previous Root Heart. The pulse visible not just to the eyes but almost perceptible as a physical sensation.
The authority stirred considerably more strongly than before.
**Root Heart Interaction Available**
**Current Authority Rank: Insufficient for Full Activation**
**Partial Interaction Available**
**Effect: Temporary output increase**
**Cost: 8 Authority Energy**
**Warning: Full Root Heart Convergence Ritual requires all three Hearts and sufficient Authority Rank**
Kai checked his current energy.
**Authority Energy: 23**
Eight energy for a temporary output increase.
He considered it.
A temporary increase was meaningful but not transformational. The real value was full activation through the convergence ritual. Spending eight energy now for a temporary effect risked leaving insufficient reserves for something more critical.
He withdrew his hand.
Not yet.
Luna had been watching him.
"Not activating it?"
"Saving the energy."
She nodded. Trusted the reasoning without requiring it explained. ƒгeewebnovёl.com
Nova looked at the circle once more. Then at Kai.
"When you do activate them, do it at night."
"Why?"
She considered how to articulate something she was perceiving rather than reasoning.
"The Root Hearts respond to the same energy as Moon Attunement. Night amplifies them."
Kai filed that carefully.
The convergence ritual at night.
With Moon Attunement active across the population.
The combination might produce something beyond what daytime activation would achieve.
They spent another hour in the clearing. Veil mapped the flow patterns in detail. Luna documented everything. Nova sat at the circle’s edge in quiet observation.
The pulse continued its slow rhythm throughout.
Unhurried. Patient. Ancient.
On the return journey the forest felt different.
Not threatening.
Simply aware.
As though the trees knew the clearing had been visited.
Knew someone had finally found what had been quietly working there for centuries.
The settlement appeared across the plains as afternoon light turned golden.
Kai looked at it from a distance again as he had after the northeast expedition.
Yet this time with a fuller picture.
Three Root Hearts.
The southern one dormant. The northeast dormant. The northwest partially active and feeding the Sacred World Tree for centuries.
An Ancient Root Network connecting all of them through the tree’s underground root system.
All of it waiting for a convergence ritual he didn’t yet know how to perform.
He opened the authority interface.
**Authority: Divine Evolution**
**Rank: Beginner**
**Authority Energy: 23**
**Root Hearts Discovered: 3/3**
**Root Heart Convergence Ritual: Locked**
**Unlock Requirement: Authority Rank Intermediate**
**Current Rank Progress: 34%**
Locked behind an authority rank increase.
Intermediate rank.
He was at thirty-four percent progress toward it.
The Primordial Fragment from Aurelis had provided the largest single jump. Natural development was progressing but slowly.
Another significant source of authority energy would accelerate the rank increase considerably.
Something to investigate.
Luna appeared beside him as they crossed the final stretch of plain.
"You found what you were looking for."
"All three."
"Yet you look like you found a problem."
"The activation requires a higher authority rank."
Luna absorbed this without visible frustration.
"How far?"
"Not close. Not impossibly far."
She thought.
"What accelerates it?" fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com
"Authority Energy from significant sources." He paused. "The Primordial Fragment was the largest jump I’ve had."
"Similar fragments might exist."
"Possibly."
Luna was quiet a moment.
"Aurelis Divine City."
Kai looked at her.
"The auction house," she continued. "The fragment you found there was unidentified. Others might be similar. Unrecognized. Undervalued."
The same logic that had led to the first purchase.
Items whose value only he could identify.
His authority reacting where nobody else’s would.
"It’s worth searching."
Luna nodded.
At the gate Iris and Forge were waiting.
Together but maintaining the fiction that they weren’t together.
Iris looked at Kai’s empty hands immediately.
He produced two pieces of the blue-tinted moss he had carefully collected from the clearing’s edge.
Both caught the evening light with an unusual luminescence.
Iris grabbed hers with delight.
Forge accepted hers without reaching for it. Simply waited until Kai held it out.
Then took it immediately.
"Acceptable," she said.
Walked away.
Iris watched her go with a satisfied expression.
"She really wanted one."
"I know."
Seven days of enhancement remaining. Three Root Hearts found. Convergence ritual locked behind an authority rank increase. The path forward clear.
The foundation was complete.
Now came the work of reaching the level needed to awaken it.
