Chapter 144: Chapter 144: Hello, Brother-in-law

Huo Jingyuan entered the house.

Wen Yaozu was sprawled on the sofa watching TV. Hearing the sound of the door opening, his gaze shifted toward the entrance.

He saw a tall man walk in.

His eyes instantly lit up. "You must be my brother-in-law!"

Although he had never seen his brother-in-law in person, he had heard from many sources about his heroic deeds and how he had become a regimental commander at such a young age.

Hearing the two words "brother-in-law," the corners of Huo Jingyuan’s lips turned up slightly.

After carefully sizing up Wen Yaozu’s figure, he walked to the sofa, turned off the living room TV, and said coldly, "Do you know what time it is? Still watching TV? Don’t you have to train first thing tomorrow morning?"

Wen Yaozu’s eyes widened.

’Wasn’t my brother-in-law supposed to put in a good word for me and get my training reduced when he got back?! How could he turn on me like that?’

"Brother-in-law, how could you do this?"

"Do what?" Huo Jingyuan asked.

The powerful, soldierly aura radiating from Huo Jingyuan scared Wen Yaozu into immediately shutting his mouth. He lowered his head and said aggrievedly, "Didn’t we have a deal? Weren’t you going to put in a good word for me?!"

"Who would have thought you’d be this fat."

Huo Jingyuan wasn’t trying to crush his spirit. Back at the hospital, he had assumed Wen Yaozu was just eating a lot during a growth spurt, so it was normal for him to be a bit chubby.

After all, there’s an old saying: a growing boy will eat you out of house and home.

But seeing Wen Yaozu in person, it was clear he really did need to lose weight.

Huo Jingyuan grabbed the collar of Wen Yaozu’s shirt with one hand and lifted. It took a bit of effort. He narrowed his eyes and said in a serious tone, "You need to lose weight now while you’re young. Otherwise, you’ll have a hard time finding a wife in the future."

"Why?" Wen Yaozu asked.

Hearing this, Huo Jingyuan’s lips curled. A low chuckle escaped his throat as he teased, "Because when teenage boys get fat... well, it’s not a good look."

Huo Jingyuan patted Wen Yaozu’s shoulder. "Your sister is just looking out for you. Work hard and lose the weight."

Wen Yaozu looked up, his gaze determined.

’Starting tomorrow, I’m going to work hard to lose weight and not be lazy anymore. I’ll focus on losing the weight first and worry about the rest later.’

"Brother-in-law, I’m going to bed then."

"Go on."

Watching Wen Yaozu return to his room, Huo Jingyuan’s gaze shifted to the stairs leading to the second floor. He went up with extremely light steps. As he opened the door to the master bedroom, he heard the sound of Wen Ci’s steady breathing.

The man tiptoed to the bedside. Through the sliver of light from the doorway, he saw that the thin blanket on Wen Ci had slipped down to her waist. He reached out and pulled the blanket back over her.

He knew Wen Ci was sleeping so soundly because she was utterly exhausted.

Just as he was about to go to the adjacent room, his large, broad hand was grasped by a small, delicate, and warm one. A drowsy voice called out, "Huo Jingyuan?"

"It’s me," Huo Jingyuan replied.

He turned back to look at Wen Ci, who had already opened her eyes. Perhaps because she had just woken up, her almond-shaped eyes shimmered with a captivating light, stealing his soul.

Huo Jingyuan’s deep, ink-black eyes stared intently at Wen Ci. Her loose-fitting nightgown had shifted, revealing a flash of fair skin.

"You’re awake."

Wen Ci raised a hand to rub her eyes. "How long was I asleep?"

"A few hours."

Wen Ci opened her arms, her voice coquettish. "I want a hug."

"Mm."

The next second, Wen Ci was pulled into a gentle embrace. The man’s body still carried the faint scent of disinfectant. Huo Jingyuan coaxed her softly with his tender voice:

"I’m here to provide for you. You don’t have to work so hard and exhaust yourself with business."
