Chapter 59: 59-She Looks Annoyed
Verity:
After I was discharged, I took a cab home.
I could already tell things weren’t going to go well for Theodore.
I just wanted to see what Gigi would do next.
Of course she would come after me.
I had already seen a few clips from the news channels.
They had exposed Theodore and me together.
I wasn’t going to make up any excuses.
I was going to wait for Theodore to come up with something himself so I could use it against him and put some distance between us.
That way, he would have to start all over again.
The more he craved me, the more fun it was.
Once I arrived home, of course Mrs. Baker was outside.
The news hadn’t traveled that far yet, though.
Omega communities were kind of deprived of everything.
"Where were you?" she asked.
"I had an allergic reaction," I replied dramatically.
She was holding a tray filled with home-cooked food.
"Oh my, are you okay?" she asked, trying hard to look startled.
"I think you haven’t seen the news," I mumbled, drawing attention to it myself.
I watched her frown at me.
"Thankfully, Jaguar’s brother was there, and he took me to the hospital."
I finished speaking and watched her eyes widen. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
It was important for her to know that I was being taken care of.
That even if Jaguar was the only one interested in me, the others still saw me as family.
"Yeah, you’re lucky," she stammered before smiling widely. "Did you speak with Jaguar about not pursuing anything against those thieves?"
Her tone revealed exactly where her priorities lay.
Every man for himself.
I had heard that saying before, and I learned the truth of it when my brother was brutally destroyed.
"Yes, I did. Don’t worry."
That little slip-up didn’t even seem to register with her.
She looked happier than ever knowing that no case would be pursued against them.
And I guess that was all she cared about.
"I brought you some food. I’ll come inside and put it down for you, okay?" she uttered, stepping in front of me.
I walked to the door and, while entering the code, made sure she couldn’t see it.
Then I unlocked the second lock with my key.
Once we got inside, she hurried over and placed the food on the table.
At this point, I didn’t want to have a conversation with her. I was seriously exhausted.
"Good day," I said, practically walking back toward the door so she would understand that it was time to leave.
She did.
Once I shut the door behind her, I checked the food she had made for me.
Lasagna.
The old me would have been happy to devour it all, but the new me knew that people were never nice without a reason.
Now, I looked at everything with skepticism.
I picked up the tray and set it aside, thinking I would test whether it was safe to eat first and then either feed it to some homeless people or give it away.
Those people had been the kindest to me. They were the ones I truly believed still had humanity in them.
The others were just werewolves.
Cold-blooded killers.
Animals.
The rest of the day passed in silence.
I had expected Jaguar to text me once the news spread, but he didn’t.
Not a single message.
Theodore did, though.
He asked if I was okay, and I replied with a simple yes.
Now all I had to do was wait and see what excuse he came up with in the morning.
I wore a beautiful black tight skirt dress for the day. When I arrived at the office, I could already tell the news had traveled to everyone’s ears because even the guard was staring at me. The other warriors standing in the distance were whispering among themselves.
I kept my head high and entered the office, taking the elevator to the top floor. Deep down, my heart was thundering against my chest, but I maintained a calm posture.
Once I reached Ragnar’s floor, I stepped out and calmly knocked on the door.
"Come in."
It was Ragnar’s voice, but it sounded different from usual. It was almost as if he was chewing on the words.
I opened the door and stepped inside to see Gigi sitting right beside him. The way he was glaring at me, I could already tell she had complained about it.
"Good morning," I greeted them, giving a small courtesy bow before moving toward my workstation.
I had only just started to sit down when Gigi called out, "Come over here, Verity. I need to talk with you."
I got up again and walked over to her. They watched my every move as if under a microscope.
Once I reached the table, I smiled at her.
"Have a seat," she said, gesturing toward the chair.
I lowered myself onto the seat and leaned back slightly, remaining attentive. I did not want to appear too authoritative or arrogant, especially since Alpha King Ragnar had leaned back in his chair, rested his elbow on the armrest, and started rubbing his chin between two fingers, letting Gigi take over the situation.
"We saw the news," Gigi began, looking as pissed off as she could.
"Before you ask me any questions, I want to explain my side," I immediately spoke up.
I didn’t know what Theodore had told them because I honestly hadn’t expected them to sit me down for an interrogation.
It was kind of new and really out of pocket.
"Sure, go ahead," she said, folding her arms across her chest.
"I had an allergic reaction, and Alpha King Theodore thankfully took me to the hospital."
I kept it as vague as possible, and Gigi’s raised eyebrows were an indication that she wasn’t satisfied at all.
"And how did you two end up together? I mean, I don’t understand," she remarked dramatically, making me shift slightly in my seat.
I adjusted myself in the chair, deciding to be honest, at least for now.
"I was going back home when someone came at me and tried to rob me."
As soon as I began telling my story, I watched them listen attentively.
