Chapter 35: Sick

"W... why am I undergoing training?" I asked, shifting my gaze between the four men.

"Do you want a repeat of today’s incident? And you should see a doctor; your forehead is swollen," Parker sighed, then walked to the door. He took out his phone and began dialing a number; I suppose he’s calling a doctor.

"You need a little bit of training, sweetheart," Cooper added.

A little bit? I doubt it will be little at all.

"I heard you got hurt trying to escape that horrid man."

I got hurt? I didn’t get hurt. Does Bryce think my swollen forehead is from trying to escape him?

"That’s why you need the training. We talked about it and came to an agreement. We can’t always be there when you need us. Of course, we’ll try our best to stay by your side, but unexpected things can happen."

"But I have a personal guard," I reminded them. They employed Willa to protect me, didn’t they? She’s doing her job perfectly.

"Well, where was she when you were being chased?" Bryce stood up and fixed his gaze on me.

"That’s because... that’s..." He knows why Willa wasn’t there; he didn’t allow me to go with her. It’s his fault. Is he trying to shift the blame to Willa?

"That’s precisely why you need basic training." He patted my shoulder and started to leave, but I stopped him before he reached the door.

"Do you have to do it yourselves?" I muttered.

"I don’t like their idea. If I must receive training, let it be done by a professional, not them. I don’t want either of them to be my trainer."

But Bryce scoffed at my words; the others remained silent.

Why? Am I speaking nonsense? Can’t I have a professional trainer?

"I’m leaving," Bryce called it a night, and without another word, he left.

"I just called the doctor; he’ll be here in less than thirty minutes. Get treated. Goodnight," Parker said before walking away.

I’m left with Gavin and Cooper; maybe I can try convincing them.

After clearing my throat, I approached them.

"Is it... necessary? You’re very busy; I don’t want to ruin your schedule. A professional trainer would make things easier for you," I whispered.

"It won’t be daily; you can stop worrying. You seem too concerned," Gavin murmured, his gaze on his phone as he typed.

"You need to be able to protect yourself, princess. Do you know how outraged we were when we learned about today’s incident? You might have suffered serious injuries. The worst part is that this happened in our warehouse. Our properties should be places where you feel safe and free, not scared or threatened," Cooper added.

So they won’t listen to me? They’ll decide my fate once again.

It’s fine. This isn’t the first time this has happened.

"Okay," I gulped. I understand. I turned and started to walk away, but Cooper stopped me.

"Have you had dinner?"

"Yes."

"Good. The doctor will be here soon."

I turned and went to my room. Approaching the door, I heard my phone ringing. I hurriedly picked it up and answered.

The call was from Sandra.

"Hello, Sandra," I said, expecting her voice, but heard a different voice instead. freeweɓnøvel.com

"It’s me, Cole," came the voice from the background.

"How are you? Is your forehead okay now?"

"Why are you the one calling?"

"I missed you. I was worried. I heard about the incident. I’m sorry it happened to you. I just wanted to hear your voice."

What incident? Oh, is it about the man who chased me?

"Everyone is talking about it here; I’m glad Bryce saved you."

"Cole... I wasn’t expecting your call."

"I know, I was worried, and Sandra told me how you exchanged contacts. I’ll communicate with you from here."

"Cole..."

"I know what you want to say: I’ll be safe, and I’ll only speak to you once a week. There’s no need for you to visit the warehouse again. It’s dangerous. We can continue communicating this way."

I sighed, sat on the bed. "Okay. How are you? It’s late; have you had dinner?"

"About to. What about you?"

"Had mine."

"What about Ruby?"

"Ruby? She’s doing well and was also concerned about you."

"Umm, listen, Amera, I have something to confess. I couldn’t say it when you came, but I don’t want to keep it from you."

"Okay? What is it?"

"It’s about Bryce. He met me personally and offered me a job as your driver, but I turned it down. Of course, I was happy to get the offer, but I thought he might have ulterior motives. I still recall how scared you were when you saw me at the house that night. You were as pale as a ghost; I didn’t want to put you in that position again. Sorry for telling you so late," he explained.

Bryce offered him a job as my driver? Weird. Why would he do that?

"Did he tell you why?"

"No. He didn’t answer my questions and he barely looked at me."

"What questions did you ask?"

"Oh, they’re a bit private; I can’t say. Forgive me."

"I hope you didn’t get into trouble."

He laughed, "I didn’t."

"You should be careful, especially around Bryce and Parker. Stay away from them. You did well to refuse the job offer. Thanks for telling me."

"No problem. Uh... I have to go now; I need to eat and get back to work."

"Don’t overwork yourself, please."

"I won’t. Goodnight."

"Goodnight," then the line went dead.

Once the call ended, I lay on the bed and closed my eyes.

Bryce can be unpredictable. Why would he offer Cole that position? Is he trying to set him up again?

And what’s with the stupid training?

Ugh... I hate my life. I wish I could escape.

I stayed on the bed and soon fell asleep. When I woke up the next morning, I couldn’t feel my head.

My forehead was swollen; even the area around my eyes ached.

When I couldn’t stand, I crawled under the duvet and stayed there.

I think I’ve fallen sick. Oh gosh... This is not a good time for this.
