Chapter 337: Chapter 318: Who Can Resist Canned Fish?
When she asked the important questions, the pig-headed monster just lowered its head and wouldn’t say a word.
Then it had hastily run away.
Wen Ying looked at the old castle. Under the darkening sky, it grew even more gloomy.
She walked toward the castle’s entrance. Unlike before, the door wasn’t closed.
The two doors were open, as if leading into some abyss, the blackness within growing ever deeper.
Standing outside, it was impossible to see what was inside.
Wen Ying took a step and walked right through the doorway.
Instantly, the surrounding darkness seemed to swallow her whole.
The next instant, she was surrounded by light.
It was as if she had entered another world.
"Are you a new caregiver or a patient?" The voice was strangely dry and withered, and its cadence wasn’t that of a normal person.
Wen Ying looked toward the source of the voice. Perched on a piece of wooden furniture was a black cat.
Its eyes stared at Wen Ying like a pair of eerie specters.
’The voice had come from this direction, so... was it this cat?’
[Was that the cat talking?]
[No way, right? Is it someone hiding? How can a cat talk?]
[Are you new to this show? We’ve already seen a pig-headed monster and a goat-footed monster. You still expect this to be a normal world? A talking cat seems perfectly normal, doesn’t it?]
[I mean, I think so too, but it still feels weird. I have two cats at home, one black and one white. I’m gonna go try and see if they can talk! Wait for my update, bros!]
[This cat looks a little different, though, right? Its eyes are creeping me out. How is that like a housecat? Even stray cats don’t have such a calm yet terrifying gaze, do they?]
[Doctor Wen is looking at the cat, too. That means this cat is special!]
"Were you the one talking just now?"
Wen Ying asked.
"Foolish human. If it wasn’t I, Lord Cat, then was it you, you fool?"
The Black Cat spoke mockingly.
Everyone: [...]
"I’m the new janitor," Wen Ying replied patiently and gently.
"A cleaner?" A strange smile suddenly appeared on the Black Cat’s face.
THUD!
Something smashed onto the floor. The Black Cat looked at Wen Ying excitedly.
Wen Ying saw the Black Cat swipe its paw, and a bottle fell to the ground.
A puddle of something black like ink, but very viscous, appeared on the floor.
"Human janitor, the floor is dirty! Clean it up immediately! Once you’ve cleaned it, you can play a game with me!"
The slightly chubby Black Cat’s tone of voice remained just as strange, sounding like rattling, dry bones.
Wen Ying looked at the puddle on the floor. "But I’m off the clock."
The Black Cat looked at Wen Ying, not understanding. It was a little displeased. "Human, why aren’t you cleaning? Do you know what the punishment is for not completing your task!"
Its voice grew sharper.
"I’m off the clock," Wen Ying said again. "Oh, you cute little cat, do you not know what ’off the clock’ means? Is there no such thing as getting off work in your world?"
The Black Cat was taken aback by Wen Ying’s words.
’What is this "off the clock" thing?’
"You poor little cat. You should have met me sooner, then you could get off work every day too! Look at you, working so hard guarding this place so late at night. But you should know, our asylum is a very humane institution, understand? A nine-to-five schedule, a full benefits package... are you enjoying those? If not, I can help you report it to management!"
Wen Ying said with righteous conviction.
Just then, a round head suddenly peeked out from behind the staircase.
The owner of the head stared at Wen Ying as if she were an idiot, watching her lecture a black cat about nine-to-five workdays and full benefits packages.
’Where did this psycho come from?’
’If I heard correctly, this psycho said she’s a janitor?’
’But aren’t the people who come here all caregivers?’
’Since when do they have janitors?’
The Black Cat didn’t understand what this human was saying, but that didn’t stop it from getting angry.
Just as it was about to lose its temper, the foolish human spoke again. "Don’t tell me you don’t know what a nine-to-five schedule and a full benefits package are?"
Then, Wen Ying proceeded to explain the concepts of "nine-to-five" and "a full benefits package" to the Black Cat.
Her right hand pulled a can of food from her pocket.
"Know what this is?"
The Black Cat was already dazed. It shook its head and made a strange noise. "I don’t know."
But for some reason, it smelled really good. ’I want to eat it!’
"This is dried fish! When you have a full benefits package, you’ll be able to buy even more dried fish to eat."
