Alex continued chasing the scent for three days only stopping to rest once a day. Eventually they arrived in a city surrounded by massive stone walls.
This city bordered a large desert, they immediately noticed the ambient esper was thicker.
The scent they were following led here. They followed a queue leading to the city gate. They put on their rings.
This was nobody would pay attention to them. Even if they draw the attention, people still won’t be able to make out their features.
This was the best thing about these rings. Unless one draws way too much attention, interacting with people didn’t mean they’ll recognise you.
Finally it was their turn. " Your identification." The guard outstretched his hand, they didn’t have identification.
So they were forced to pay 5 Rai each. They went inside the city and looked for an inn. They found a cheap inn near the outskirts of the city.
Werewolves weren’t exactly poor, they had been given some funds for this mission. They chose this inn because it was inconspicuous.
" Okay, now that we’re settled I’ll go check out the targets and assess their numbers and strength.
Chogo will come with me, his hearing might allow us to learn their conversation as well." Chogo nodded and stood up.
He followed Alex out and they followed the scent to a hotel. It was quite an expensive looking hotel.
They stood across the hotel. People passed by them without paying them any attention. Alex was still amazed by the power of these rings.

He had already smelled how many people were in that inn. There were four of them, the three he was chasing and another person.

Chogo shook his head, " I can barely hear anything, there seems to be something blocking my ability."
Alex nodded, he believed the inn was enchanted by some witch spell. That would make sense considering how luxurious it was.
The guests would certainly like to have some privacy. " Let’s go back, we’ll gauge their strength when they leave the inn."
They went back but would occasionally come back to check up. Just like that, two days went by.
It had already been five days since they started this mission. Far from the time limit imposed on it.
On the night of the second day, the four people finally came out. Based on their features.
It was obvious they were all from the Scapra race. Their leader appeared to be an old man using a cane to walk.
Alex smelled the artefact on this old man. The other three followed behind him like underlings.
They went to an expensive restaurant where he stopped following them. He left Chogo to keep watch on them.
He arrived back in their inn and ordered the other werewolf to keep watch. He sat down cross legged.
Using pack call from such a long distance was hard enough on its own. The fact that the black market was in another dimension increased the difficulty a hundred fold.
He needed extreme concentration to connect to Adrian who was basically the pack call’s connection tower.
The only reason he might even succeed was because he was a member of the main lineage and a Delta.

Adrian felt Alex trying to connect to him and he allowed it. The connection went through and Alex reported.
" I see, good job." He went to find Annie who had locked herself up in the library.
" Alex just sent a call, he has determined the location and strength of the enemy, unfortunately he couldn’t tell if they had hidden weapons."
Annie raised her head and looked at him. " That doesn’t make things very easy. Did he say how rich they were?
Because if they’re rich they probably have hidden trump cards. It’s safer to assume they’ve purchased some magical weapons and talisman from the witches.
After all, they must be expecting to be ambushed by the army of the Scapra kingdom.

He nodded, " I’ll also tell Alex to remain there as backup. You know, in case the enemy proves difficult.
We can’t have the first and only two mercenaries we have dying on their first mission.

Annie nodded at that, " I’ll go contact those two right now." She stood up and walked out.
Adrian followed after her. It didn’t take too long for the two mercenaries to arrive looking excited.
They had taken off their masks, they were obviously less guarded against the guild than they were at first.
" Thank you for coming, we have a mission for you. The two of you are still only 1 star mercenaries.
Normally you shouldn’t be allowed to take a high 3 stars mission but as you can see, we have a manpower issue."
" If I may ask." Gratavellorytorra raised her hand. " The two of us are both level 3 ogres, why are we only 1 star mercenaries?"
" Your mercenary rank isn’t determined by your strength but by your competency. As you know, there are those who can fight across levels.
If we determined ranking by level, then it would e unfair to them. To rank up you need to accumulate enough mercenary points.
You also need a success rate of 60 percent as a sign of competency. The two of you are only given this mission because we have no other choice.
