Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Felix Preston Goes Mad

"Wait a second."

Julia Dawson watched Sonia Quincy’s furious retreat, when something suddenly dawned on her.

"This Ms. Quincy... could she be the infamous Sonia Quincy? The fake heiress who was kicked out of the Quincy Family in Aethelburg?"

"...It’s her." Since Julia Dawson had already recognized Sonia Quincy, there was no longer any need for Mina Jennings to hide the truth.

"Oh my god..." Julia Dawson’s jaw dropped in shock. "It’s really her. No wonder she kept her mask on and absolutely refused to take it off."

"Hmph." Mina Jennings’s lips curled into a smirk. She turned, walked behind her desk, and sat down with a casual air.

"Julia, what do you think of Sonia Quincy as a person? Does she match the rumors?"

"Not at all." Julia Dawson shook her head. "I’ve met my fair share of people, but it’s rare for someone to make me feel so at ease. Sonia Quincy is one of the few."

With that, Julia Dawson took two steps back and settled onto the sofa again. "After interacting with her for a day, I’ve only seen professionalism, humility, and kindness. She has absolutely nothing in common with the ’vicious’ and ’arrogant’ woman described in the rumors."

"Mm-hmm." Mina Jennings nodded, then asked, "And do you think her humility and kindness seem put on?"

Julia Dawson replied, "Not at all. There’s a sincerity in the way Sonia Quincy looks at people, without a hint of disguise. Besides, if her kindness were just an act, you wouldn’t have recommended her to me so highly."

Mina Jennings smiled. "If she were just pretending, I never would have partnered with her in the first place."

"..." Julia Dawson sighed. "It’s so strange. Sonia Quincy is clearly a good person, so why does the outside world paint such a different picture of her? When I first heard the gossip, I couldn’t help but marvel that such an outlandish woman could even exist."

Mina Jennings crossed her legs, her smile turning cynical. "Gossip ruins lives..."

"I’m such an idiot! How could I have forgotten to turn my ringer on?!"

Inside the speeding black Maybach, Sonia Quincy slapped her forehead in frustration. "I was so focused on telling Felix to call me that I completely forgot my phone was on silent!"

"It’s too late now, blaming yourself won’t help." Jasper Linden gripped the steering wheel, his entire body rigid with tension.

"Willow Quincy won’t dare to actually kill someone, so try not to worry. Your stress will affect the baby. Take a deep breath and try to calm yourself down."

"I can’t calm down!" Sonia Quincy’s heart was in her throat. How could she possibly be calm?

She hastily swept the stray strands of hair from her forehead and, drawing on the lingering memories of the story’s villainess, dialed Willow Quincy’s number.

RING... RING...

"The number you have dialed is unavailable at the moment. Please try again later..."

"The number you have dialed is unavailable at the moment. Please try again later..."

Unsurprisingly, Willow Quincy’s phone wouldn’t connect.

Sonia Quincy tried over twenty times, but Willow Quincy never picked up.

"I knew he wouldn’t answer." Jasper Linden slammed his fist on the steering wheel in frustration. "That Willow Quincy is completely unhinged. When you were in the Quincy Family, he found fault with everything you did. Now that you’ve left, he’s trying everything he can to destroy the family you’ve built."

"What did you do, steal his family’s chickens in a past life? Why does he hate you this much?"

That was a question Sonia Quincy couldn’t answer herself. She tossed her phone onto her lap, helplessly closing her eyes and praying frantically for Felix Preston to be safe...

CRASH!

Felix Preston’s car was already a mangled wreck, but Willow Quincy still refused to let him go.

He was driving a battered Cullinan, hauntingly tailing Felix. Whenever he saw an opening, he would ram Felix’s car, as if truly determined to crash him to death.

Felix Preston’s car was severely mangled, and a large hole had been smashed through the driver’s side windshield.

VROOOM—

Willow Quincy suddenly floored the accelerator, maneuvering the Cullinan to pull out and drive parallel to Felix’s car in a blatant provocation.

Felix Preston turned his head, his face a cold mask as he glared at Willow Quincy.

Willow Quincy met his gaze with a sinister stare, grinding his teeth audibly.

WHOOSH—

SCREECH—

The roar of the engines and the shriek of the wind filled his ears. Felix Preston floored the accelerator, but he still had no intention of retaliating.

He had promised Sonia Quincy before leaving that he would come back to her safe and sound, with good news. Willow Quincy could be reckless with his life, but Felix couldn’t. His life included Sonia now, and he couldn’t bear to throw it away.

But in the next instant, Willow Quincy suddenly raised a hand, revealing a bracelet he had been twirling around his fingers.

Felix’s eyes widened in shock, his steady resolve instantly thrown into chaos.

The bracelet was Sonia Quincy’s. It was the wedding gift he had given her when they had just gotten married. Later, when the Preston Group went bankrupt, Sonia had sold it to support him in starting his new business.

But now, that same bracelet was in Willow Quincy’s hand!

Willow Quincy was very pleased with Felix’s reaction. Seeing the color drain from his face, he curled his lips into a delighted smirk. He then brought his hand back and pressed a suggestive kiss to the bracelet.

"Willow Quincy—"

Something inside Felix instantly snapped. His fingers dug into the steering wheel, his grip so tight the veins on the back of his hands stood out in sharp relief.

VROOOM—

He slammed the accelerator to the floor, rocketing forward as if he had a death wish.

Not to be outdone, Willow Quincy floored it and gave chase.

But Felix suddenly executed a drift up ahead, swinging the rear of his car around to block Willow Quincy’s path. Willow instinctively slowed down, but to his surprise, Felix floored the accelerator again, hurtling directly toward Willow’s car in a kamikaze attack!

Willow Quincy had no time to dodge. He could only watch, frozen, as Felix’s bloodshot eyes grew closer and closer, until—

CRASH!

A deafening crash exploded in his ears, and before Willow Quincy could even register the pain, he lost consciousness.

...

"Cough, cough... cough, cough, cough!"

The pungent smell of gasoline leaking from the two wrecked cars choked Felix Preston awake.

He pushed the airbag away and struggled to open his eyes. His glasses had been shattered in the crash; his vision was a blur. He couldn’t see anything clearly, only a startling layer of crimson that warned him he needed to get out of the car. Immediately.

With the last of his strength, he kicked a gap into the warped car door and scrambled out of the vehicle.

He didn’t know the extent of his injuries, only that his entire body throbbed with a pain so intense he felt like he was dying.

"Cough, cough, cough!"

Not far off, Willow Quincy’s intermittent coughing could be heard. The sound pulled Felix’s consciousness back into focus, and life flooded back into his vacant eyes.

He stumbled toward the source of the sound and, upon getting closer, found Willow Quincy lying pathetically on the ground, covered in blood.

"Willow Quincy—"

Felix Preston crouched, grabbed Willow Quincy by the collar, and hauled him up from the ground.

Willow Quincy weakly lifted his eyelids, his gaze landing on Felix Preston with a sneer.

Felix Preston gritted his teeth, asking through ragged, blood-tinged breaths, "Aren’t you disgusting? Falling in love with your own sister!"
