Chapter 66: Chapter 66: I’m Willing to Die at Sonia Quincy’s Hands

"Your Sonia..." The name pierced Renee Sinclair’s heart. She laughed bitterly, her tone laced with sarcasm. "Felix, do you even know what kind of person she is to think she’s so important?"

"She fakes being a new person for two days and you actually believe she’s had a change of heart? You’re so easily captivated, she’ll be the death of you, Felix Preston!"

"Miss Sinclair!" Felix Preston’s brow furrowed. He glared at Renee Sinclair. "I know what kind of person Sonia is better than you do. You’re an outsider. You have no right to pass judgment on her!"

"It’s my life and my wife. I can tell whether her intentions are genuine or not. I don’t need you to meddle, Miss Sinclair."

"But I have to get involved!"

Every word Felix uttered in Sonia’s defense was like a dagger twisting in Renee Sinclair’s chest, pushing her reason and emotions toward a precipice of fury.

Her breathing grew ragged. She looked up, staring daggers at Felix as fine, red veins webbed across her eyes.

"Felix Preston, Sonia is a fake! Her kindness toward you isn’t real at all, don’t you get it?!"

"Then I’ll accept that it’s fake." Felix had no desire to argue the point with Renee. Since she was so convinced Sonia was a fake, he decided to just go along with it.

"Even if Sonia’s kindness is fake, it doesn’t change the fact that she’s my wife. Once my wife, always my wife. Even if I were to die by her hand one day, I would do so willingly!"

"...Felix Preston!" Renee Sinclair completely snapped. She had planned on playing the victim for Felix, but now she was consumed by an uncontrollable rage.

"You’d willingly let Sonia Quincy kill you? Are you fucking insane?"

"Maybe I am," Felix replied, not bothering to explain. "I don’t care if I live or die. I only care about Sonia Quincy."

Renee Sinclair’s hands balled into fists, and she trembled with rage. "Sonia Quincy is just a venomous villainess with the face of an angel and the heart of a snake! What is there to care about? If she weren’t so weak and useless, would that Zhang woman have been able to harass you for so long? If I hadn’t stepped in today, you wouldn’t even know what hit you when the Preston Family was bullied into the ground!"

Felix arched an eyebrow, his smile laced with mockery. "So, I should thank you?"

"Thank you for brawling on my doorstep? Thank you for upsetting my wife, who’s five months pregnant? Thank you for shoving my mother when she tried to break up the fight?"

"I—I didn’t mean it like that..." Felix was rarely so caustically sarcastic, and his retort left Renee Sinclair utterly speechless.

Felix’s lips curled into a cold smirk as he tore his gaze away from Renee Sinclair.

"I don’t care what you meant. I just hope you learn to separate your work life from your personal life. Miss Sinclair, our relationship can only ever be professional. If that’s not enough for you, then we don’t need to have a professional relationship at all."

"Felix, don’t!" Renee Sinclair panicked. She took a step back, the violent rage emanating from her instantly vanishing.

"Don’t be so cruel. I... I won’t do it again."

Felix said, "I hope you keep your word, Miss Sinclair."

With that, he turned decisively, strode to the car, opened the door, and got in without another word to Renee Sinclair.

Renee Sinclair clenched her fists, her fresh manicure digging into her palms. Her chest heaved with ragged breaths.

"Damn it..." She stomped her foot in frustration and began muttering to herself.

’My favorability score dropped to zero. Is this what you call a ’golden opportunity’ to rack up points?’

’No, what do you mean my methods were wrong? When you’re dealing with a shameless, pestering bitch like that, isn’t getting physical the only way?’

’Not hit her? Then what do you suggest I do? Pull up a stool and try to reason with her patiently, like that damn villainess?’

’Don’t make me laugh. I’m the true female lead of this novel, the final winner! Why should I learn anything from the villainess?’

’I have to use favorability points again? My score is zero! Where am I supposed to pull points out of for you? Is this system of yours even reliable? You’re useless when it counts...’

"Sonia? Sonia?!"

"Huh?"

Felix had to call Sonia’s name twice to snap her out of her daze. She turned, looking at him blankly. "Oh, you’re back?"

Felix smiled gently, the icy demeanor he’d shown Renee Sinclair moments before melting away into the warmth of a spring day.

"What were you staring at so intently?"

Sonia answered honestly, "Miss Sinclair. After you left, she was just standing there muttering something. Something about a ’villainess’ and the ’canon female lead’?"

"No idea." Felix reached over and pulled Sonia’s seatbelt across, buckling it for her. "She’s acting strange. Don’t pay her any mind; just let her spout nonsense."

Sonia Quincy nodded. "Alright. But you said some pretty harsh things to her. Will her father’s company still be willing to invest in you?"

"They should." Felix fastened his own seatbelt, then straightened Sonia’s slightly askew collar. "Mr. Sinclair is a businessman, and there’s no businessman who doesn’t want to make money. As long as my game can turn a profit for him, he’ll have no reason not to invest."

"Don’t worry, I have confidence in my game."

"Okay." The worry on Sonia Quincy’s face faded, and she finally smiled. "Let’s go home, then!"

Felix gently tapped the tip of her nose, his calloused finger brushing past the small beauty mark there. "Yeah. Home."

Watching the couple’s intimate and affectionate display, Mrs. Preston couldn’t stop a smile from spreading across her face.

She leaned forward slightly and said with a smile, "I’ve kept the food warm in the pot. We can eat as soon as we get home."

Sonia Quincy replied, "Okay! Thanks, Mom!"

Hearing that warm, affectionate title, Mrs. Preston felt her eyes inexplicably begin to sting.

"You’re welcome." She looked at Sonia Quincy’s long hair fluttering in the breeze, her gaze kind and her smile warm. "As long as my Sonia is happy, Mom is happy too."

After such a trying day, Sonia Quincy was utterly exhausted, both physically and mentally.

His heart went out to her. Not wanting her to have to travel again, Felix made a last-minute decision to skip going to his studio that afternoon and stay the night at the house.

Now in her second trimester, Sonia Quincy was often hungry. After expending so much energy today, she ate two full, large bowls of food before she felt some of her strength return.

"I’m sleepy."

The moment she put down her utensils, Sonia Quincy felt drowsy.

"I’ll take you to lie down." Felix Preston took her hand and led her to the bedroom to tuck her in for a nap.

Only after making sure she was fast asleep did he quietly turn the knob and slip out of the room.

"Is Sonia asleep?"

Mrs. Preston heard the sound of the door closing and asked in a whisper.

Felix nodded. "She’s asleep."

Mrs. Preston breathed a sigh of relief, her expression a mixture of comfort and sympathy. "Ah, this whole ridiculous mess has really worn Sonia out."

Felix walked to the living room and sat down next to Mrs. Preston on the sofa.

"It’s my fault, in the end. If I hadn’t suddenly gone bankrupt, Sonia wouldn’t have been dragged into this kind of life with me. Sometimes I think if I’d just agreed to the divorce back then, she wouldn’t have had to go through all this hardship."

"Silly boy, don’t talk like that." Mrs. Preston patted Felix’s hand, a hint of exasperation in her voice. "Sonia has changed. She wouldn’t want to hear you say things like that."

"You probably don’t even know how much Sonia defends you behind your back."
