Chapter 67: Chapter 67: I’ll Make Her Too Ashamed to Show Off
"’She stood up for me?’" The words made Felix Preston’s eyes light up. He turned to Mrs. Preston and asked eagerly, "Mom, did Sonia say something about me to you?"
Mrs. Preston shook her head. "Sonia didn’t tell me. She told that Mr. Lockwood."
"Mr. Lockwood?" Felix Preston frowned. "Ethan Lockwood?"
Mrs. Preston said, "That’s him. He and that young lady from the Quincy family came to see our house today."
"What?" Felix Preston’s expression changed drastically.
Mrs. Preston gave a bitter smile and told Felix Preston everything that had happened that morning, from beginning to end.
She particularly emphasized how Sonia Quincy had stood up for him in front of Ethan Lockwood.
His eyes began to sting as he listened, and for a moment, he felt an overwhelming urge to cry.
After she finished, Mrs. Preston sighed softly. "Sonia has really changed a lot. Felix, you have to cherish her from now on. You have to be exceptionally good to her, you understand?"
Felix Preston nodded, the corners of his eyes moist. "I know."
Mrs. Preston smiled, gratified. "I used to think that maybe Sonia wasn’t the right person for you. Otherwise, why would your marriage have been such a failure? But looking at it now, I see it was just that the time wasn’t right for you two."
"Seeing your relationship getting better and better truly makes me happy."
The corners of Felix Preston’s lips curved into a tender smile. "I’m very happy too."
Mrs. Preston said, "You’ve never had much luck with girls, even as a kid. Now you finally have a thoughtful wife by your side. This old heart of mine can finally rest easy."
"Not just yet," Felix Preston said, using the motion of adjusting his glasses to secretly wipe the corners of his damp eyes.
"Your granddaughter will be born soon, and you’ll need to save your energy to help take care of her."
"Huh?" Mrs. Preston’s eyes widened, her face filled with delighted surprise. "How do you know it’s a granddaughter? Did you ask the doctor?"
Felix Preston replied, "No, even if you ask the doctor about the baby’s gender, they won’t tell you."
"If you didn’t ask, then how do you know it’s a granddaughter?" Mrs. Preston asked, puzzled.
Felix Preston fibbed with a straight face. "I’m guessing. Sonia is beautiful, and I hope she has a daughter who’s just as beautiful as her."
Mrs. Preston said, "...I don’t have the words for you."
...
「In a high-end restaurant in Downtown Aethelburg.」
Cecilia Quincy sat by the window, her head turned to watch the streets a hundred meters below, where the streams of cars and people moved back and forth like migrating ants.
She was still wearing the same emerald green strapless dress from her argument with Sonia that morning, the one that had put her at a complete disadvantage. The dress featured a gradient color, and though unadorned, the shimmering fabric caught the sunlight, creating a spectacular luster that made it seem more luxurious than any high-end designer gown.
"Why isn’t she here yet?" she muttered, frowning. Her delicate, lovely face was filled with impatience and agitation, making her features look somewhat harsh.
"I’m here." Yvonne Scott appeared at the restaurant right on schedule, jogging over to Cecilia Quincy. "Sorry, Cecilia. There was some traffic on the way."
Cecilia Quincy irritably lifted her chin, gesturing for Yvonne Scott to sit down.
Yvonne Scott took the hint and complied.
She was another one of Cecilia Quincy’s followers. Sometimes, when Ramona Lawrence wasn’t around, she alone would accompany Cecilia, ready to be at her beck and call.
"Cecilia, I saw the texts you sent me. I can’t believe it either. Sonia Quincy has fallen into such a wretched state, yet she’s still clinging to Mr. Lockwood. She’s so shameless."
The mere mention of it made Cecilia Quincy’s temper flare. She raised a hand to touch her exquisite princess braid, her expression foul. "You didn’t see the look in Ethan’s eyes when he looked at her... It was full of longing and jealousy! He used to only ever look at me that way, but now... he’s looking at Sonia Quincy like that too!"
"He used to hate Sonia Quincy so much, so much that he sent her straight to Felix Preston’s bed! So why? Why is he looking at her like that now?"
"Yvonne, I’m really scared. I’m scared Ethan will rekindle his old feelings for her."
"What are you afraid of?" Yvonne Scott thought Cecilia Quincy was overreacting. "Sonia Quincy is ugly and poor now, and she’s pregnant with Felix Preston’s child. How could Mr. Lockwood possibly rekindle his feelings for her?"
"Besides, to be blunt, it’s not like Mr. Lockwood ever had strong feelings for her in the first place, right? The person Mr. Lockwood has always loved is you."
"I know everything you’re saying, but..." Cecilia Quincy leaned forward, her right hand clenched into a tight fist on the table, her face fraught with anxiety. "But the way Ethan looks at Sonia Quincy is really not normal! Especially when Sonia was showing off to him how happy she is now. The jealousy in his eyes was practically overflowing!"
"I’ve been with him for so long. His eyes could never deceive me. He’s definitely started to think about Sonia Quincy in a different way!"
Yvonne Scott sighed and pushed a glass of juice, newly delivered by the waiter, in front of Cecilia Quincy. "Cecilia, don’t scare yourself. Who is Mr. Lockwood? He’s Aethelburg’s most sought-after new business tycoon. Why would he have any designs on a married woman like Sonia Quincy?"
"I can’t even bring myself to believe that."
"Hmph..." Cecilia Quincy sneered and slowly shook her head. "So what if he’s a new business tycoon? Isn’t he still just an ordinary man? All men are the same kind of trash—they don’t cherish what they have, and they covet what they can’t get. Whether Sonia Quincy is poor or ugly, or even pregnant with another man’s child, is completely irrelevant to him. What matters is that Sonia Quincy no longer belongs to him."
"...And so?" Yvonne Scott truly didn’t understand what Cecilia Quincy was trying to say, her slightly widened eyes filled with confusion.
Cecilia Quincy explained, "And so, he gets restless. He feels discontented. If I don’t stop it in time, he’s very likely to do something to Sonia Quincy, driven by this ’discomfort.’"
"Sonia Quincy has never been one to be trifled with. If she seizes the chance to start over with him, all my efforts for all this time will have been for nothing!"
"Ah..." Yvonne Scott only half-understood, but seeing that Cecilia Quincy was losing her patience, she didn’t dare press further and had to pretend she got it.
"Cecilia has a point. That really is how men are. Since you’ve already noticed something is wrong, have you thought of a way to stop it?"
"Of course!" Cecilia Quincy bit her lip, her fists clenching tighter. "Sonia Quincy loves showing off how happy she is, doesn’t she? Well, I’m going to make it so she’ll never have the face to show off again!"
...
Lynn Preston, for a change, didn’t have to work overtime today, so the five members of the Preston family could finally gather for a reunion dinner.
Sonia Quincy had just woken up from her afternoon nap when she received a notice for revisions from Mina Jennings. She sat on the bed with her tablet, using "handling work" as an excuse to secretly do some drawing.
Afraid of disturbing her, Mrs. Preston said to Felix Preston, "Felix, ask Sonia what she wants to eat tonight. I’ll make whatever she wants."
Felix Preston replied with a smile while typing on his keyboard, "Mom, no need to cook tonight. The whole family is going out to eat."
"Going out?" Mrs. Preston didn’t object, simply asking, "What are we eating?"
Felix Preston finished typing, saved the file several times for good measure, and then shut down his computer.
"We’re having steak. Sonia’s been craving it for a long time."
Mrs. Preston agreed readily. "Sounds good!"
Felix Preston had already booked a restaurant. As soon as Sonia Quincy finished her revisions, he took her straight there.
But as fate would have it, the world is a small place for rivals. After all the trouble of going out for a nice meal, the couple had the bad luck of running into Willow Quincy—and were even seated at the table right next to hers.
