Chapter 112: Chapter 113: I Want to Kiss You

The sweet, almost pleading whisper was clearly full of affection, yet when it reached Sonia Quincy, it felt like being pierced by countless needles. A dense, prickling pain spread from the depths of her heart.

She raised her hand and placed it on the back of Felix Preston’s, holding back a sob and her heartache as she answered him in earnest. "I missed you too, Felix."

Felix Preston managed a weak, gentle smile for Sonia Quincy. The sight sent such a pang of pain through Sonia that her breathing hitched. Her throat felt as if it were being strangled by a thick vine, trapping both air and words, until all she could do was cry.

"Don’t cry." Felix Preston moved his fingers slightly, gently wiping the tears from her face. He was the one who was injured, yet here he was, comforting her.

"Sonia, don’t cry. I’m awake. I’m all right."

Felix’s attempts at consolation only made things worse; Sonia Quincy instantly began to cry harder. Fat teardrops fell like beads from a broken string, landing on his blanket and soaking a small patch in the blink of an eye.

"Sonia, don’t cry." Felix Preston struggled to sit up, but the pain was too great, and he couldn’t move. He could only lie there, frantic with worry.

"You’re breaking my heart. Please don’t cry, okay? Be good, Sonia."

Sonia Quincy nodded, sobbing as she bit her lip hard, trying to suppress the overwhelming urge to cry.

Seeing her looking so miserable and wronged, Felix Preston’s heart truly shattered into a million pieces.

"I’m so sorry, Sonia. You were never one to cry, but now... I-I’m always making you cry."

"No." Sonia Quincy took a deep breath, managing to choke back her tears.

"You have nothing to apologize for." She shook her head, looking at Felix Preston. "In this entire world, you’re the one who’s treated me the best. You’ve never wronged me in any way."

Felix Preston shook his head as well. "No, I have wronged you. I haven’t been able to give you a good life, and I’ve dragged you into this, letting people bully you. Y-You arguing with Cecilia Quincy and the others... I heard it all. I heard you curse Willow Quincy, and I heard you say... that you would die for me."

"Why... Why are you so good to me?"

Sonia Quincy tilted her head, nuzzling her cheek against the palm of his hand. "Because I like being good to you."

"You like it...? Then... then can you kiss me?" His body was covered in injuries, and his mind seemed to have become a bit more childish with them. He gazed at Sonia Quincy, wheedling for a kiss like a little boy.

"Just one kiss. I want to kiss you."

But Sonia Quincy just reached out and tapped the oxygen mask on his face, shutting him down without mercy. "No kissing right now."

Felix was surprisingly obedient. Since Sonia said not now, he didn’t pester her and make it difficult. Instead, he said, "Then you can owe me. You owe me a kiss, and I’ll come to collect it when I’m better."

"Okay," Sonia replied.

Having just woken up, Felix’s throat couldn’t handle so much talking at once.

"COUGH, COUGH, COUGH..." He coughed, his brow furrowed and his face contorted in pain. The spasms shook his entire body.

Sonia didn’t humor him any longer. She immediately ran out of the hospital room and called for the doctor and nurse on duty.

A group of them surrounded the hospital bed, giving Felix Preston a thorough head-to-toe examination. Once they had finished, they changed his IV drip and, after confirming there were no other issues, finally left in relief.

Mrs. Preston didn’t arrive at the hospital until nearly dawn, carrying three insulated containers. They were all filled with soup she had simmered for Felix.

But it was too late for Felix to drink it, so she could only set the containers aside and sit by his bed, murmuring words of concern.

Sonia Quincy had been so exhausted these past few days that before Mrs. Preston could even finish speaking, she had curled up on the sofa and fallen into a deep sleep.

"Mom," Felix Preston said, lifting his uninjured hand to point toward the sofa. "Sonia’s asleep. Go cover her with a blanket."

"Oh, my..." Only then did Mrs. Preston realize Sonia had fallen asleep. She quickly walked over from the hospital bed, unfolded a blanket, and tucked it snugly around Sonia.

With Felix awake and out of danger, Sonia could finally sleep soundly. Watching her, Mrs. Preston noted her peacefully closed eyes and gaunt cheeks, and her heart ached so much that tears immediately began to fall.

"Sonia has had it so, so hard lately. She’s been working, taking care of you, and fending off constant harassment from the Quincy Family. And she... she’s carrying a child of the Preston family. Every time I look at her, I feel like I’ve done her a great wrong."

"But she never complains about being tired. She was even ready to risk her life fighting those people just so you could get some proper rest."

The more Mrs. Preston spoke, the more her heart ached, and she hated that she couldn’t think of a better way to be kinder to Sonia.

Felix turned his head, his gaze fixed on Sonia out of the corner of his eye. She looked so peaceful in her sleep, like a little stray cat that had finally found a home after a long time wandering.

At that moment, the pain in Felix’s heart far surpassed the pain in his body. He felt he owed Sonia far too much—so much that even giving his life would not be enough to make it up to her.

Mrs. Preston sat beside Sonia, gently patting her shoulder as if soothing a child. "Felix, what’s past is past. Don’t dwell on it. From now on, you must treat Sonia well. You absolutely cannot let her suffer even the slightest grievance, do you understand?"

Felix blinked, and in the stillness of the late night, the determination in his eyes burned as hot as the midday sun.

...

She slept so deeply and peacefully that she didn’t wake up until just before nine the next morning.

Mrs. Preston had already gone out to buy breakfast, and Felix was still asleep. Sonia sat up on the sofa, pulled out her phone, and immediately opened WeChat.

At two o’clock in the morning, Renee Sinclair had accepted her friend request and taken the initiative to send her a message.

——What kind of deal do you want to make with me?

Sonia typed her prepared response into the chat box and sent it without hesitation.

——I’ll help you earn goodwill points to save your life. In return, you will cooperate with my revenge.

Renee Sinclair’s reply was almost instantaneous.

——Revenge? What revenge are you talking about?

Sonia: You don’t need to concern yourself with that. You just need to cooperate with me unconditionally. Don’t worry, my demands won’t be too unreasonable.

Renee Sinclair: Then how are you going to help me earn goodwill points? Weren’t you the one who’d rather die than give up Felix Preston?

Sonia: I never said I was giving him up. I’m saying I’ll allow you to appear in his life and earn just enough goodwill points to survive. Anything more than that, don’t even think about it.

Renee Sinclair made no attempt to hide her intentions; her reply was blunt and pragmatic.

——I should stop thinking about it just because you say so? Since I’ll be able to appear before Felix Preston again, why shouldn’t I just snatch him away? After all, you’re the one giving me this opportunity. It’d be a waste not to take it.

Sonia Quincy sneered at her phone screen.

——If you’re not afraid of seeing all those hard-earned goodwill points plummet back to rock bottom, then by all means, do as you please. You’ve learned this lesson before. If you’re still as stupid as you were back then, there’s nothing I can do for you. After all, you can’t reason with a ghost that’s begging to be damned.

...

Renee Sinclair fell silent.
