Chapter 113: Chapter 114: Bitten by Felix
It took her a while to reply.
——How are you going to help me?
"COUGH, COUGH COUGH COUGH..."
Sonia Quincy was just about to reply when Felix Preston suddenly started coughing in his bed, waking up. Sonia quickly put her phone down and, her pregnant belly heavy, walked to the bedside.
"Sonia..." Felix Preston weakly opened his eyes and gently took her hand with the one that was free of an IV drip. "Sonia, I want some water."
Sonia squeezed his hand in return. Just as she was about to get him some water, she noticed the oxygen mask still covering his face.
Only a doctor was supposed to remove the oxygen mask. As much as Sonia’s heart ached for Felix, she didn’t dare take it off herself.
She patted the back of Felix’s hand reassuringly and leaned in close. "Felix, you’re still wearing the oxygen mask, so I don’t know how to give you any water. Wait here, I’ll go get a doctor."
Felix nodded weakly. "Okay, I’ll wait. Walk slowly, don’t rush."
"Okay." Sonia placed his hand back on the bed, then turned and hurried out of the room to find a doctor.
The doctor came, checked on Felix Preston’s condition, and then decisively removed the oxygen mask.
"Mr. Preston regained consciousness early and is recovering well. He doesn’t need the oxygen mask anymore. The family can give him water themselves."
"What about food?"
Mrs. Preston, who had just returned with breakfast, overheard the doctor from the doorway and quickly chimed in.
The attending physician smiled. "You can feed him yourselves, but please note that Mr. Preston can only have light, low-sodium foods for now. Nothing too dry or too hard. Keep it as soft as possible."
Mrs. Preston committed every word to memory, not daring to miss a single detail. "Yes, yes, thank you, Doctor."
The doctor waved. "I’ll be on my way. If you need anything, just come find me at my office."
"Thank you for your trouble, Doctor." Mrs. Preston saw the doctor to the door, closing it behind him before coming back to help Sonia give Felix water.
Felix Preston was now fully awake. After drinking a full glass of water, he was able to sit up against the headboard and speak coherently with Mrs. Preston.
Mrs. Preston spoon-fed him the vegetable congee she had just bought. At the same time, she didn’t forget to check on Sonia.
"Sonia, I bought your favorite creamy custard buns. Go have them after you finish your congee."
Sonia, phone in hand, replied to Renee Sinclair’s messages while answering, "Okay, thanks, Mom."
Renee Sinclair had too many questions, and Sonia lost patience after a few replies. Seeing that Felix was doing well, she decided to just arrange a meeting with Renee in person.
——Four o’clock this afternoon. The Arbor Café. Let’s meet and talk.
Renee Sinclair: Okay.
Today was Thursday, the day Sonia was scheduled to meet Julia Dawson to sign a contract. The reason Sonia was so proactive about meeting Renee was that she figured since she had to go out anyway, she might as well get both things done at once.
After breakfast, Mrs. Preston took some dirty clothes into the bathroom. The contract signing was scheduled for eleven in the morning, which meant Sonia had to leave soon.
But Felix had just woken up and was being particularly clingy; she didn’t have the heart to leave him now.
"Sonia."
Just as she was struggling with how to bring up her departure, Felix suddenly reached out and gently touched her forehead.
"Hm?" She looked up with a smile, her gaze soft as she looked at Felix. "What is it?"
Felix asked, "Do you have to go out and take care of something?"
"H-How did you know?" Sonia was a little shocked.
Felix smiled. "Just a guess. If you have to go, then go. Don’t be late."
Sonia frowned, feeling reluctant. "But you just woke up. I don’t want to leave you here alone."
"It’s okay." Felix’s finger slid to her brow, gently smoothing the crease there. "If you have something important to do, you should go. Mom is here to watch over me. I’ll be fine."
"But before you go, you have to give me something first."
Sonia: "What?"
Felix pulled his finger back and tapped his own pale lips. "The oxygen mask is off. Isn’t it time you gave me what you owe me?"
"This..." Sonia’s face flushed red. She wanted to, but she had never been the one to initiate a kiss. Felix’s sudden request made her feel rather shy.
"Mom is still in the room. It wouldn’t be right."
Felix arched an eyebrow, his normally gentle and handsome features taking on a roguish tint. "Mom’s in the bathroom. She can’t see."
"..." Sonia was suddenly out of excuses.
Seeing her hesitation, Felix deliberately put on a cold, proud front. "What? Don’t tell me your promises last night were just to placate me? You don’t actually want to make good on them?"
Sonia puffed out her cheeks cutely. "I’m not..."
Felix struggled to suppress a smile, feigning anger. "You’re not? Then why aren’t you making good on your promise?"
Sonia bit her lip, her heart pounding like a drum. Felix gave her a cool look, and it seemed he was starting to get genuinely upset.
She clenched her fists and took a deep breath. Though shy and hesitant, she finally stood up and leaned in toward Felix.
Felix stared at her with clear, lucid eyes, watching her as a predator watches its prey. His gaze made her skin crawl, and she had to stop and whisper, "Close your eyes."
Felix was surprisingly obedient, closing his eyes immediately.
Only then did Sonia find the courage to continue moving closer...
Her soft lips brushed against Felix’s, light as a feather. His lips were a bit dry, and Sonia felt a faint, prickly sensation as they touched.
Sonia still didn’t really know how to kiss. The only thing she could manage was a simple press of her lips against his, after which she intended to immediately pull back and flee.
But Felix wasn’t about to let her run. He suddenly raised a hand to the back of her head, applying gentle pressure to pull her down. At the same time, he parted his lips, giving Sonia a very practical lesson on how to properly kiss her husband.
"HISS—"
The kiss, full of longing and possessiveness, ended with Sonia being bitten.
Sonia covered her mouth, glaring at Felix with a frown. "You bit me?"
A wicked smile played on Felix’s lips.
Sonia retreated two steps, pouting. "What are you, a dog?"
Felix blinked. "If Sonia says I am, then I am."
"..." Sonia’s lip throbbed from the bite, and any lingering sympathy she’d felt for Felix vanished in an instant.
"No more kisses for you." She grabbed her bag, turned on her heel, and stormed out of the room.
Felix called after her retreating figure, "Be safe! Come back soon!"
Sonia deliberately talked back, "My ears are all plugged up! Can’t hear you!"
"Hmph..." He wanted to laugh at her retort, but the movement pulled at his wounds, causing a sharp pang of pain.
He raised a hand to clutch his throbbing ribs, and his mind involuntarily flashed back to the last thing Willow Quincy had said to him before he lost consciousness.
