Chapter 111: Chapter 112: I Missed You While I Was Unconscious
Sonia Quincy quickly composed herself, lifted her head, and smiled at Lynn Preston. "Your brother was awake for a bit, but he’s fallen asleep again. The doctor said he’s out of the woods. He’ll be fine once he’s had enough rest and wakes up."
...Hearing Sonia Quincy’s words, the anxiety that had plagued Lynn Preston the whole way here finally subsided. She raised a hand to her forehead and, on unsteady legs, slowly walked to Felix Preston’s bedside, bending down to look at the man on the bed with his eyes tightly closed.
"Good. As long as he’s out of the woods, that’s what matters." She curved her lips into a faint smile, her voice as soft as a whisper. "Let him sleep. Let my brother sleep peacefully. Once he’s had enough rest, he’ll really be okay."
"Come and sit." Sonia Quincy patted the spot next to her. "He just fell asleep not too long ago. He probably won’t be waking up anytime soon."
Lynn Preston nodded. "Okay."
Then she reached out and tucked in the corners of Felix Preston’s blanket.
"How did you two end up coming together?" She straightened up, turned, and asked as she walked toward the sofa.
Evan Yates said, "I heard from Sonia that Preston was awake, so I rushed over with some things to see him. Turns out my timing was terrible. Preston was already asleep by the time I got here."
Jasper Linden chimed in, "Me too."
"You..." Lynn Preston sat down snugly next to Sonia Quincy, her gaze toward Jasper Linden a mixture of shock and deep confusion. "How did you know my brother was in a car accident? And you’re even thoughtful enough to visit him?"
"I..." Jasper Linden was stumped by the question. He instinctively glanced at Sonia Quincy, hoping for some kind of hint.
"Ahem..." Sonia Quincy cleared her throat and gave Jasper Linden a very slight shake of her head.
Jasper Linden understood her instantly. Within two seconds, he had concocted a reasonable excuse. "I happened to be nearby when your brother got into the accident. I was the one who called the police and the ambulance. It’s only natural for me to come see him, right?"
"Oh, is that so..." The explanation sounded surprisingly plausible, and since Sonia Quincy didn’t deny it, Lynn Preston didn’t overthink it and simply believed him.
"Well, thank you, then. Thank you for being willing to put aside your personal grudges to save my brother’s life."
A smirk playing on his lips, Jasper Linden raised an eyebrow and replied softly, "You’re welcome."
"Hey," Sonia Quincy suddenly remembered something. She turned to Lynn Preston and asked, "Why did you come alone tonight? Didn’t Liam Joyce come with you?"
"Tch..." At the mention of it, Lynn Preston couldn’t help but roll her eyes. "He saw members of the Quincy Family at the hospital. How could he possibly have the guts to follow me here? When he was seeing me off this afternoon, he found himself an excuse to be ’busy.’ I bet he won’t be ’free’ until after my brother is discharged."
...Sonia Quincy was so speechless she had to laugh. "I figured he’d do that."
Lynn Preston said, "I figured as much too. But seeing him go to such lengths to find an excuse with my own eyes... I was still so speechless it was hard to accept."
"Heh..." Evan Yates gave a cold laugh and shook his head, completely at a loss for words to describe a person like Liam Joyce.
It was getting late. Outside, the night was as thick as ink, a darkness that even the brilliant neon lights of Aethelburg couldn’t penetrate.
Evan Yates and Jasper Linden didn’t stay for long. Having arrived together, they left together.
Only now did Lynn Preston finally have a chance to unburden herself of what she’d been holding in all day.
She played a recording on her phone, first letting Sonia Quincy listen to her conversation with Milly. Only after it was finished did she recount, in detail, everything that had happened at the dinner meeting that afternoon.
"So that’s the whole story. If we want to get evidence of Liam Joyce and Ethan Lockwood conspiring together, our only option might be to find Yvette Fuller."
"Yvette Fuller..." Sonia Quincy murmured the name, not seeming particularly surprised. "I understand. I’ll send Evan Yates a message in a bit and have him find out the whereabouts of Yvette Fuller’s husband as soon as possible. And while he’s at it, he can check if her husband is the same person who’s been causing trouble at the Preston Group."
Lynn Preston: "Mm-hm!"
Tomorrow was Wednesday, and Lynn Preston had to get up early for work, so Sonia Quincy didn’t let her stay at the hospital for too long. Seeing that it was getting late, Sonia all but pushed and pulled her out the door and sent her home.
Mrs. Preston had gone home to make soup and hadn’t returned yet. In the private room, only the sleeping Felix Preston and a drowsy Sonia Quincy remained.
After finishing up some work, Sonia Quincy found Renee Sinclair’s contact info in her call history. She copied the somewhat familiar phone number into WeChat, found Renee Sinclair’s account, and immediately sent a friend request.
A long time passed without Renee Sinclair accepting the request, but Sonia Quincy wasn’t worried. She was certain Renee Sinclair wouldn’t refuse her.
"Haa..." She yawned, her eyelids feeling so heavy she could barely keep them open.
Just then, Mrs. Preston sent her a voice message on WeChat, saying the bone broth would take several more hours to cook and that she should go ahead and sleep instead of waiting up. Only then did Sonia put down her phone and make a simple bed for herself on the couch. Once it was ready, she settled in and fell asleep.
She didn’t know how long she’d been asleep when she suddenly felt an itch on her cheek, as if someone was gently brushing something against her. She scratched it a few times to no effect, so she irritably opened her eyes, intending to see what on earth was causing it.
The lights in the hospital room were still on. When Sonia Quincy first lifted her eyelids, she saw nothing. But after blinking a few times to adjust to the light, she realized a rose was being tickled against her face.
And the person causing the mischief with the rose was none other than the now-awake Felix Preston.
Felix Preston lay on the bed blinking, holding a single rose he’d plucked from the bouquet Evan Yates had brought. With his relatively uninjured hand, he dangled it triumphantly in front of Sonia Quincy like a little kid.
...Sonia Quincy’s eyes went wide. She stared at him, stunned, for a full minute before she was completely awake.
"Felix Preston!" Supporting her belly, she carefully but eagerly scrambled up from the sofa. She rushed to his bedside, a smile on her face, and gazed at him adoringly with tear-filled, laughing eyes.
"You’re awake! How are you feeling? Should I go get the doctor now?"
"N-no, don’t." Felix Preston’s voice was still hoarse, raspy and scratchy, making his words unclear. But that didn’t stop Sonia Quincy from communicating with him.
"I feel fine. Don’t call the doctor right away. If the doctor comes, I won’t be able to be alone with you. I haven’t seen you in so many days. I want to be alone with you for a little while."
"Okay," Sonia Quincy nodded, spoiling him unconditionally.
He pulled his hand back and presented the pink rose to Sonia Quincy, saying sheepishly, "Sonia, this flower is for you."
Sonia Quincy fought hard to hold back her tears as she carefully accepted the rose. "Thank you."
"Sonia." Felix Preston looked at her, his eyes full of tender concern. He reached up with a hand covered in small cuts and gently, so gently, caressed her cheek. In his raspy, grating voice, he told her, "Sonia, I missed you so much while I was asleep."
