Chapter 404: Chapter 404: Do I Like This Man?

"It’s so cold in the space. How strange. It wasn’t even this cold last winter."

Shen Yi’s brow twitched. He fought to keep his lips from curling into a smile as he said calmly, "It’s so late, don’t go to all that trouble. Just sleep on the kang. I’d feel terrible if you caught a cold because of me."

Qin Jiao’s hand froze, and she looked at him in confusion.

Suddenly, a corner of Shen Yi’s mouth lifted. "What’s wrong, Jiao Jiao? Are you worried I’m going to do something to you?"

"Weren’t you just offering to help me bathe?"

Neither of them had much experience, but they weren’t shy youngsters either. Qin Jiao simply put down her quilt, climbed onto the kang, and laid out her bedding. She scoffed, "Fine by me. Who’s scared? If you dare to come over in the middle of the night, I’ll give you a kick that’ll end your family line!"

Shen Yi: "..."

He felt an inexplicable chill.

He said sheepishly, "Jiao Jiao, I was just joking. If you’re not willing, I would never do something like that."

"So you do want to, then?"

"..."

This topic was far too dangerous, and yet, between the two of them, it also seemed perfectly normal.

It was a shame, really. In their last life, they’d had countless opportunities to become a true husband and wife, but something always went wrong. Eventually, Qin Jiao lost heart and gave up, and Shen Yi couldn’t bring himself to force her.

It was, frankly, pathetic.

Silence spread across the toasty-warm kang, and a romantic tension coiled in the orange lamplight.

When Qin Jiao turned her head, she was surprised to find that Shen Yi’s ears were actually red!

’Was he actually shy?’

She couldn’t help but lean in a little closer. Having just bathed, she carried the faint scent of soap. Shen Yi instinctively pulled back, raising an eyebrow. "Or is it Jiao Jiao who wants to do it?"

Understanding the implication, the corner of Qin Jiao’s mouth twitched. "Of course not," she said.

She immediately dove back under her own covers and, while she was at it, switched off the light. ’After all, if the room got any hotter, she was worried her own ears might turn red.’

As the room plunged into darkness, Shen Yi suddenly spoke in a low voice, "Jiao Jiao, do you remember that time Lin Nian set us up?"

"Of course I remember."

’At that time, she had just been reborn. Her mind was in turmoil, but one thought had been crystal clear: she had to change her life.’

More than two years had passed in a flash, and her life was now vastly different from her previous one.

The only thing that hadn’t changed was that this man was still by her side.

Qin Jiao couldn’t help but sigh at the thought.

In the darkness, Shen Yi, wrapped in his blanket like a giant cocoon, started to wriggle in her direction.

Qin Jiao immediately snapped, "Shen Yi, what are you doing?"

"Cold."

"Ha."

"I won’t do anything else."

She didn’t believe him for a second, but since it was Shen Yi, she wasn’t afraid. If worse came to worst, she could just pop into her space.

Apparently, Shen Yi had thought of that too. He stopped moving. A moment later, the sound of his steady breathing filled the air as he slept.

It seemed he just wanted to be a little closer to her.

Qin Jiao lay with her eyes open, all sleepiness gone. She was well aware of how good Shen Yi had been to her over the past two years.

But she just couldn’t get over that hurdle in her heart.

And yet, she had involuntarily drawn closer and closer to him, until now, when the two of them were still in this absurd fake marriage.

’Do I like this man?’

In her past life, she had resented him and hated him. Maybe there had been love, too, but it had all been worn away to nothing.

Perhaps in that kind of environment, it was impossible for them to ever fall in love.

Or maybe it was because they were never supposed to be together in the first place. When two people are forced into a relationship, their life together is bound to turn out like that.

’Was it because of the book?’
