Chapter 6: Episode 006: You must follow her
While Rue was trying to get accustomed to this life alone in the cave, Caius was hunting for a meal for her.
She was pregnant now, so he had two mouths to feed. So he went to the beast market and decided to get something.
’You should tell her family that she is with you now.’
Caius slapped the base of his tail on the floor hard the moment the thought surfaced in his head, a low grumble erupting in his chest, scaring off some other beastmen three feet away from him.
Even the rabbit stall owner shrank back nervously.
Until he relaxed. It was not as if he didn’t want to alert the rabbit kingdom that their daughter was with him; he only feared that they would come and take her away from him.
’She is so small and defenceless, can she survive birthing your child?’
His mind continued to churn; it was as if on the right side of his shoulder was the good one, and on the left was the bad one, while he, the owner of these thoughts, listened from the middle like a passerby deciding which thought to follow through.
She was the one who walked straight into my cave when in heat. What could I have done?
Let her die?
’That would have been a better choice.’
He grunted at himself, almost facepalming in the process, but his rigid muscles relaxed when he thought about her pretty face and the sounds she whimpered when he took her.
His body had never felt so much pleasure before.
Every part of her body was soft and accommodated him in the best way possible, and she was warm. So warm, his body rippled and purred in satisfaction when he held her close. Even right now, thinking of her made his arousal lengthen and knock against his seam.
"Great Sir... Sir... Your... your order is ready..." The rabbit stall owner stammered in fear, shaking in his boots. Caius glanced at him before nodding his head.
"Sorry for scaring you." He apologised, handing over his coins. "Keep the rest."
The stall owner beamed and immediately thanked Caius. "Good luck with your rabbit!!" The stall owner cheered.
Caius choked on nothing as he immediately fled the place.
It was not an odd occurrence for a predator to buy rabbit food. Interspecies families were a daily occurrence in the beastworld now, one of the many things that had changed since Queen Roxann walked through it.
In the centre of the Beast Market, which was now named the Convergence, stood Queen Roxy’s statue in full glory, where female beasts came to pay their respect in hopes of a little one or for a mate. Caius respected her because she was the mother of Queen Tanith, the only Basilisk of the Snake Tribe and his ruler.
After buying more supplies that Rue would need, Caius travelled to the palace to meet with the Queen.
And immediately he stepped into the throne room, a woman rushed in and hugged him, almost throwing away all the things he had in his hand. His face fell immediately, and he growled.
"Get off me, Princess Gianna." He bellowed under his breath, but she shook her head.
"I missed you so much, Cai! Where were you? Weren’t you going to play with me? I have a lot of stories to tell you! What are you doing right now? What are all these things you bought?" Gianna rambled on.
Caius groaned in exasperation as he grabbed her by the back of her collar and placed her three feet away from him with the base of his tail.
"Gianna, get back here! Right now!" A thick feminine voice travelled down from behind them, and Gianna crossed her arms, pouted and ran back.
"Greetings, your Majesty." With a hand on his chest, Caius bent forward in reverence.
The woman he greeted was none other than Queen Tanith, the Ruler of the Snake Tribe, the Swamps. Cold and detached, and yet only sunny to her sister Gianna. No male had ever successfully won her affection, no matter how much they had tried.
Caius didn’t care about that. As long as his Queen needed someone, he would make sure he was hers to do whatever she desired.
"Caius, come join me at the table." She coolly ordered, and Caius was quick to obey.
Gianna happily followed them to the small table at the side. Caius might not have legs like Gianna and Tanith, but he was able to easily settle himself on the seat because this was not the first time he had done it.
He quickly poured Tanith and Gianna a cup of green tea that smelled like East Greenery with sugar.
"You have gotten yourself a mate?" Tanith calmly said as she raised the cup to her lips.
Caius choked on his own tea, coughing and wheezing at her brutality. Gianna beamed, though there was a dullness in her eyes, yet she didn’t say anything.
"A Rabbit." Tanith dropped the cup back on the table heavily. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
"A RABBIT?!!!!" Gianna exclaimed in shock, and Tanith tossed her a glare, making her clamp her mouth shut.
When Caius caught himself back, already used to Tanith’s ability, he finally found his words. "Yes, a rabbit, she hopped into my cave, I believe she was chased by one of our people because she smelled of fear and... and..." Caius struggled to say the next words.
His cheeks pinkened.
"Caius, are you actually blushing right now?" Gianna gushed, and Caius tossed her a glare.
"Behave yourself, Princess Gianna," Caius warned her, and she chuckled, very pleased that she finally had his attention again. Tanith smiled.
"She was in heat, and you, the ever kind snake, decided to help her out, and now let me guess. Is she pregnant?" Tanith summarised, and both Gianna and Caius tossed a look at her.
Their eyes were wide in surprise, but for different reasons.
"How did you know!"
"She is pregnant?!"
Tanith didn’t say anything; instead, she added more sugar to her tea. "I am contemplating whether I should invite Iris over for this good news I am going to share with her. Will she be elated?"
Caius slowly calmed down as he rubbed the back of his neck, his vulnerable side finally showing now that she was being open with him.
"The thing is that I am a snake and she is a rabbit, predator and prey can’t work that simply, right? I don’t know how to treat her perfectly because I have never been with someone romantically before, and I don’t want to mess things up."
Tanith finally looked at him, watching the way he was trying to avoid their faces.
He was ruthless and cold and everything in between, but when it came to this rabbit, something in him had shifted. Tanith could sense it in him more clearly than she could sense the rabbit she hadn’t even met.
"Caius." She grabbed his attention. "She is a female, treat her the way you treat Gianna and me. You might not love her, but she is your mate now, your beast approves of her, show her how much you care for her." Tanith advised with a small smile, warmth pooling in her eyes.
Caius pressed his lips into a thin line.
The soft rabbit appeared in his head again, and he relaxed.
Just when he was about to leave, Tanith stopped him and spoke in a soft voice so that Gianna couldn’t hear.
"Whatever choice she makes at the end of the road, follow her."
