Chapter 14: Chapter 14. Cutting Ties.
Outside the gate.
It had been two days since the rescue team from Derulo City University entered the gate.
More people who had discovered their loved ones were on the train that disappeared into the gate were currently crowded outside the gate.
Personnel from the Global Warriors Association and The Global Academic Federation were doing all they could to calm the anxious people down.
Suddenly, someone spoke.
"Sir, the gate is shrinking."
The man who had been addressed, a dark skinned man in leather jackets, jeans and sneakers, looked at the gate. He was an instructor from Derulo City University.
A legendary rank 2 warrior.
He looked back at a woman who was standing close to him. . She was from the Wariors Association branch in Derulo City. She was also a legendary rank 2 warrior.
"It seems they succeeded, Bridget."
Bridget, the fair skinned woman in t shirts and skirts, nodded. "Yeah, Cosmo, It’s a relief."
Reporters, and the families of those who had disappeared into the pocket world through the gate, including the personnel from the GWA and GAF, were all looking at the shrinking gate to see the rescue team, and if possible, any survivors they would be coming out of the shrinking gate with.
However, no one was coming out.
"Why are they not coming out?"
"Did they die after dealing with the gate?"
"Are our loved ones safe?"
"What the hell is going on?"
"Mr Cosmo, can you explain what is going on?"
"Miss Bridget, can you give us a statement?"
Chaos ensued as cameras flashed across the faces of Cosmo and Bridget. The reporters were not giving them a chance to breathe. Those related to the victims of the incident were also bombarding them with questions.
"This is the part about the job I hate the most," Cosmo sighed inwardly. Why didn’t he stay in the military after completing his two years military service? They didn’t have to deal with this kind of nonsense from reporters and families. If he said anything questionable, public opinion will cause everything to backfire, and he could even lose his job as a professor.
Bridget was also having a difficult time.
"Of all the times to have been on duty. It had to be today," she cursed inwardly. There was nothing she hated more than being on live TV. One had to choose their words carefully else public backlash would cause a lot of trouble.
"We don’t know the situation inside," Cosmo said with a professional smile. "We can only hope they will be stepping out at anytime."
"What do you mean?"
"You are not even sure they are fine?"
"Seriously... What are the Warriors Association and the Academic Federation doing? Are you guys even doing your jobs?"
The uproar intensified. Those watching the live feed across Derulo City were also bombarding the comment sessions with all sorts of theories and comments. Social media was a really brutal place.
"That’s it... I don’t care if I lose my job. I can always find another one. Let me give these fuckers a piece of my mind," Bridget thought inwardly. She was about to reply since Cosmo had decided to keep quiet and ignore the riotous crowd.
Suddenly, something came out of the gate.
Everyone at the scene, including Cosmo, Bridget, the reporters, the crowd, and even those watching, paid attention to the gate entrance. A group of people were coming out.
Cosmo recognized them. These were his students.
Norton.
Dahlia.
Vincent.
Sarah.
Then one last person many didn’t know stepped out. Brown hair. Dark eyes. Tall. Dressed in casual t-shirts, jeans and black sneakers.
After that, the shrinking gate vanished.
Reporters flooded the rescue team.
"Mr Norton, how come the rest of your teammates are not with you?"
"They didn’t survive," Norton replied.
"What about the people from the train?"
"There were no signs of them. Had we come across any of them, we would have brought them out with us. Isn’t that obvious?" Dahlia was the one to reply this time. She was getting annoyed with the constant barrage of questions.
The moment she spoke, the place turned completely silent. Everyone who had hopes that their loved ones would be rescued had their hopes shattered. Some broke into tears. Others decided to quietly leave with sighs.
"The only one from the incident who survived is this man, Mr Aiden Vhorn," Norton pointed towards Aiden.
Dahlia, Vincent and Sarah nodded. All eyes fell on Aiden. He was very calm.
"Since he was the one who played the greatest role in closing the gate, it’s the perfect opportunity to help enroll in Derulo City University. Doing someone like him a favor is a necessary connection," Dahlia thought.
However, before she spoke, Norton beat her to it.
"Mr Aiden Vhorn here is not only a beginner rank 1 warrior, but he played the most important role in closing the gate."
Norton went ahead to narrate everything Aiden had done, from the time they encountered him to every thing that went on to when they stepped out of the shrinking gate. Even Cosmo and Bridget were looking at Aiden Vhorn with shock.
What Norton had just described was simply abnormal for someone who had not entered a pocket world before to accomplish. Even if they had entered a pocket world before, it would take a great deal of experience to pull it off. This Aiden Vhorn had serious tactical abilities and he was very powerful for a beginner rank 1 warrior.
The reporters were completely surprised. The stream were shocked. The crowd at the venue were shocked.
There were two individuals who were more shocked than anyone else. Falan and Williams. Aiden’s parents.
Their son was a warrior? How? When? Then it clicked. Wait... when the man who had been hired to find him and bring home was knocked out... it was not because someone else had knocked him out, or someone was protecting Aiden... Aiden was the one who knocked the man out? He was a warrior by then?
But how, he had crossed the biological awakening window... so how did he become a warrior? Also, was their son this capable? What they had just heard being narrated by the rescue team, was literally something else. Was this really their son? They were so shocked.
Aiden noticed them. He stared in their direction for a moment. He saw the looks on their faces. Shock. Puzzlement. Disbelief.
Aiden simply nodded casually towards them. Then, his gaze left them as if he had just acknowledged people he knew, but didn’t share any meaningful connection with.
Then Williams and Falan stepped out.
"Out of my way... he’s our son."
All eyes landed on them. What a lucky couple. To have such a remarkable son. His future accomplishments would be worthwhile.
Suddenly, an old lady appeared before them.
"Not too fast. I hate abusers. I recorded everything both of you said on phone."
Everyone was wondering what the woman was referring to. Falan and Williams were about to speak. But the old lady played a recording. Everyone listened.
"Do you think we pushed him too far?"
"Pushed him too far? We only had his best interests at heart in my opinion."
"You are right. I just hope he’s safe."
"And if he’s not able to come out... I don’t want you to blame yourself. We can always have another child. But, I only have one wife. We wanted the best for our son, he just couldn’t see it."
Everyone knew what this meant. The person they had been talking about, was Aiden Vhorn, their son.
These two were really self entitled fuckers. They were actually picking on their son who was in a pocket world fighting for his life? What was worse was the fact that they even went as far entertaining the possibility of him dying in the pocket world and not blaming themselves for his death if he died. What sort of parents were these two? Why would they even have such thoughts when their child was in a pocket world?
Aiden smiled.
"I don’t know them." That was all he said. His words were clear. From today, they were not his parents.
"Son, we are sorry for everything."
"Son, please give us another chance."
Aiden looked at them again.
"From today, I am no longer your son. I may share the Vhorn name, but only on paper."
"Excellent choice young man."
"It’s good you have balls."
"I would have done the same thing."
"As expected of the hero who closed a rank 1 special gate. I’m your biggest fan from now on."
The public opinion shifted towards Aiden. Especially after he closed the gate, people were seeing him as some sort of hero. If the gate had remained open, creatures and environmental phenomena from the pocket world could have spilled into the real world, and it would have been detrimental.
Not that Aiden cared what others thought of him.
Aiden looked at the old lady and nodded warmly to her.
"Thank you, grandma."
"It’s no problem, young man." The woman smiled and returned to the crowd.
As for Falan and Williams, everyone had turned on them. They had looks of regret, shock and puzzlement on their faces.
What had they done? They had pushed their son away. Because of their selfishness. He had completely cut ties with them. They had now realized that all this while, they had not been doing whatever they said they doing for him, but for their own selfish ambitions.
But it was too late. Aiden Vhorn had publicly announced before a whole broadcast across Derulo City and Fulco City that he had nothing to do with them anymore. The two were seated on the ground in ashes, tears on their faces.
"Mr Vhorn, may I have a word?" Cosmo said.
"I guess my admission is secured," Aiden thought.
